Mac OS X on Intel: Try before you buy?
Welcome, Mac Daily News readers (and others, apparently, for as of Sunday morning this article has now been widely linked; the Internet works weekends, apparently). Thanks for dropping by. While you're here, take a minute to check out some of the other top-quality blog product that I publish each and every day. Well, most days. Whenever I feel like it, really. Also, I do accept tips . Hint, hint. Eh. It’s worth a shot. Item the first: Apple is not staffed entirely by idiots. This is self-evident, and it’s important to what follows. Keep this in mind as we proceed. Item the second: The Intel-based Power Macintoshes that Apple is showing at their developer conference are based on an Intel motherboard, generic Intel graphics and off-the-shelf Pentium 4 CPUs. This information has just become public in the past few hours. (Comments I made to the contrary yesterday and on Monday were erroneous. The source who fed me that information has been sent to bed without any supper, and says to tell you he’s very sorry and that it won’t happen again.) Item the third: It’s safe to assume, given the timeframe, that the developer transition kits that Apple will ship within a couple of weeks will be fundamentally similar to, if not outright identical to, the Power Macs on display at the conference.

By Leander Kahney Also by this reporter 02:00 AM Oct. 01, 2002 PT For years, one of the big attractions of the Mac was the ability to customize the operating system. Users could completely overhaul the machine's interface, sometimes to the point where it was entirely idiosyncratic. But all that has changed with OS X. Apple is trying to close the operating system to tweakers, a policy some critics think will ultimately do more harm than good.

Apple News/Media Reports Sony PlayStation 3 'Cell' processor to support OS X Thursday, August 4, 2005 @ 12:15pm
A new posting on Sony UK's website indicates that the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) may be compatible with the Mac OS X. The article in Sony's magazine says that the company has not finalized an operating system for the PS3, which is expected next year, but may be further delayed into 2007 . The PS3 gaming device will use a new multi-core 3.2GHz Cell processor developed jointly by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba will support a variety of operating systems, such as Linux or Mac OS X Tiger. While many rumor sites have speculated that the Cell processor could run Mac OS X, this is the first time Sony has officially mentioned support for Mac OS X . Sony's website says the PS3 is expected to offer optional hard drives of up to 80GB or 120GB, but that it "remains to be decided whether the standard version of the PS3 will come complete with a hard drive. The operating system has also yet to be clarified. The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger)."

iTunes 5.0.1 (#3): Older drives not playing/importing CDs; iPod not recognized try resetting; more
Older drives not playing/importing CDs We continue to receive reports from readers who have problems playing, importing and burning audio CDs under iTunes 5.0.1 when using specific (generally older, with exceptions) drive mechanisms. MacFixIt reader Ian Fraser describes his experience with the issue in which like some other readers attempts to play CDs resolve in freezes in iTunes. He writes: "I have an issue with iTunes 5.0 and now again with 5.0.1. When I insert a commercial or self-burned CD in the internal drive in my Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.4.2, iTunes loads the tracks from the CD with titles, but will not play any of the tracks. When you hit play, iTunes doesn't respond and freezes. When I Force Quit, the message reads iTunes not responding. All other aspects of iTunes appear to be working as normal...downloading from the store, and playing tracks already in my library. Exactly the same problems occur in the new version of Quick Time Player 7.0.2. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support yesterday, and they were unable to locate or solve the problem. However when I opened the latest version of Toast Titanium and loaded tracks from the same CD, they played normally with no problems."

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Review
By Robert Mohns
  • Introduction Tiger's Target Features Performance ... Examining Spotlight
  • Introduction to Tiger
Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" is, depending how you count versions, the fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh major release of Apple's Mac OS X operating system. It brings a number of performance improvements, brand new technologies, repackaged old technologies and new and updated applications for Mac users. Our goal in this review is to cut through the hype and look at what's most important. While Microsoft's future "Longhorn" operating system has been delayed yet again (with a "Holiday 2006" due date), Apple just brought to market a new mixture of innovation, renovation and glitz. After releasing full-price versions of Mac OS X about once a year for the past five years, Apple slowed the release schedule to 18 months. We can infer two things from this: First, Apple expects Tiger's features to remain competitive for some time. Second, and perhaps more significantly, Mac OS X has attained a certain minimum technical level that should put it in good stead for some time. Having finally delivered a 64-bit PowerPC architecture, stabilized the file system, and provided a good development environment, Apple's operating system is prepared to hold its own against Windows Longhorn and open-source desktop systems (with Microsoft clearly feeling some pressure, as it rushes 64-bit support to market while taking sound bite pot shots at Apple.)

    Introduction
Due for release on CD-ROM around the world October 17, Mac OS 8.5 will be priced at $99 with QuickTime Pro 3.0 included, according to Apple's preliminary description. The new operating system makes many fundamental changes internally, which improve performance and pave the way for "Carbon" and Mac OS X. ("Carbon" applications will run also under Mac OS 8.5 with the addition of Carbon code libraries.) Mac OS 8.5 will run only on Power Macs and PowerPC-based PowerBooks, while Mac OS 8.0 and 8.1 also supported 68040-based systems. Apple says all new Macs will have Mac OS 8.5 installed in the weeks following the launch of the product, and "the vast majority of software" will be compatible with it. A MacInTouch source says that anyone who purchased a G3 Power Mac or PowerBook within a month of Mac OS 8.5's introduction will be able to upgrade to Mac OS 8.5 through Apple's Up-to-Date program for the cost of "shipping and handling" (apparently $14.95). The "Sherlock" search system is the most striking new feature of Mac OS 8.5, but internal performance improvements also are significant. Network copy performance and AppleScript are both much faster. Mac OS 8.5 also provides installer improvements, including the ability to save custom configuration choices. Mac OS 8.5 addresses long-standing

TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack SAN FRANCISCOApple Computer plans to continue rapidly bringing out new versions of Mac OS X, but it won't continue at quite the pace it's maintained in recent years. Since rolling out the first version Mac OS X in 2001, Apple has released three updates, and it plans to show off a new version of the operating system, code-named Tiger, at its worldwide developer conference next month. However, during a talk at the SIIA Enterprise Software Summit 2004 here, Apple Chief Software Technology Officer Avie Tevanian said, "We're slowing that (pace) down a little bit...because that's not a sustainable rate. But you'll still see us go really fast." Tevanian had previously headed OS X development but was promoted last year to oversee the company's broader software development efforts.
