Setting up Macintosh OS 9 Web Browsers for Multilingual and Unicode Support
Displaying Unicode characters with Mac OS
Unicode support was introduced to the Macintosh with Mac OS 8.5, including the ability to utilise not only Macintosh Unicode fonts, but also data-fork Windows Unicode fonts such as Arial Unicode MS . However, very few applications can make use of Unicode fonts: the Web browser Opera 6 can use Unicode resource-fork fonts, the editors WorldText (supplied with Mac OS 9.1), MLTE Demo and SUE can use Windows Unicode fonts, and the desk-top publisher Adobe InDesign can utilise Macintosh Unicode fonts. Apple supplies some Macintosh Unicode fonts with Mac OS 9. Microsoft supplies a Macintosh Unicode version of the Tahoma font (containing around 1000 characters) with Word 98, but the only characters that Word 98 can display using Tahoma are those in the MacRoman character set . Adobe supplies a Unicode OpenType version of TektonPro with InDesign 1.5, but it does not support the keyboard drivers in the Language Kits, and so the characters not in MacRoman can only be entered from the Insert Character ... dialog box on the Type menu. Rather than using Unicode fonts, all OS 9 Web browsers (except

Apple Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" Review
Allow me to make a confession that may surprise you. I've been a Mac fan my entire life. Back in 1987, when my house burned down after a Christmas tree mishap I'd rather not detail at the moment, I needed to replace my crispy Commodore 64 set up with a more modern system. I originally wanted an Amiga, but alas, the local Commodore dealer didn't offer financing. The local Apple dealer did, however, and after figuring out how much I wanted to spend (an exorbitant amount even by today's standards), I arrived at two choices: An Apple IIGS with a color display, 768 KB (not MB) of RAM, one 5.25-inch floppy drive, one 3.5-inch floppy drive, and an Image Writer II printer, or a black-and-white Mac Plus with 1 MB of RAM. Yep, I bought the IIGS. I know, I know. But I really wanted the color screen, and the IIGS did feature a Mac-like user interface. More important, the IIGS hardware was simply elegant. It was a work of beauty, allowing the Apple II line to go out on a high note, even as the company basically abandoned the product. In any event, I often wondered what might have been had I adopted the Mac 20 years ago. Would I have stuck with it? Well, we'll never know for sure. What did happen was that I eventually moved to various Amiga systems and then, faced with Commodore biting the Big One in the early 1990's, I moved, unhappily, to the PC. I did everything I could to avoid Microsoft for two years, opting for IBM's doomed OS/2 for a while. But with Windows 95, Microsoft finally got its act together, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Mac OS X for Physicists
About Mac OS X
Mac OS X is a powerful operating system that combines Unix underpinnings familar to particle physicists and easy-to-use interface of Macintosh. This home page describes how to set up Mac OS X for the use by particle theorists or other physicists.
Install OS
Of course, you must install the operating system first. From the installer, don't choose "Easy Install" but "Customize" it so that X11 (see below) will be installed. Once you have installed the system from CD-ROM, launch "System Preferences" from Dock, click on "Software Update", and keep updating the system until you don't see any more updates. You can skip some updates, if you are dead sure that you will never use Arabic on your machine, or you won't use fancy MP3 player from Apple iPod. But install all of those that are not obviously useless for you.
Developer Tools
You definitely want C compiler so that you can install standard Unix software. The CDs to install Developer Tools must have come with your system. Developer Tools for Mac OS X is also freely available here if you sign up. Its compiler is a hacked version of gcc to support Objective C. The Developer Tools is big, though, weighing more than 200MB.

What is Mac OS X?
Introduction
This document attempts to give a hacker over-friendly answer to the question "What is Mac OS X?". My original motivation in writing this was that somebody had proxy-volunteered me to give a talk introducing Mac OS X to the Linux Users Group at my work place. While thinking over what to say to those folks, most (if not all) of whom are strangers to Mac OS X, I decided to write a supplementary document that they could refer to at their leisure. Since I moved to Mac OS X, I have had a few discussions with people who are curious about Apple and Mac OS X, but have not used the platform. Often, what they think is a somewhat distorted, perhaps even incorrect version of the "truth": there are many areas in which they think the Mac is worse or better than it really is. Consider (with colloquialisms preserved):
  • Macs are good only for graphics/media work.

Introduction
It's that time of year again. For three consecutive years , Apple has released major updates to what is now definitively The One True Apple Operating System: Mac OS X . The release was a compiled-binary apology for 10.0, distributed for free to the brave Mac OS X pioneers. Version came dressed for success , wearing its code-name on its sleeve in a fur-themed box. Sporting significant architectural improvements such as rendezvous and Quartz Extreme , pride was a big part of Jaguar's message. Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, released on October 23, 2003, solidifies Apple's yearly operating system update strategy: another year, another +0.1, another US$129. As with 10.2, qualifying customers who have purchased new Mac hardware recently can upgrade to 10.3 for "free" (which means "US$19.95 for shipping and handling" in Apple's world.)

Introduction
Back in early November of 2003, I introduced my Mac OS X 10.3 Panther review with some concerns about Apple's OS release cycle. It's strange to have gone from years of uncertainty and vaporware to a steady annual supply of major new operating system releases from Apple. But do I really want to pay US$129 every year for the next version of Mac OS X? Worse, do I really want to deal with the inevitable upgrade hassles and 10.x.0 release bugs every single year? Is it worth it, or is a major OS upgrade every year simply too much, too often? In the end, I

Michael Dell is interested in licensing Apple's Mac OS. I've mentioned several times in the past few months that executives from several PC companies have told me of their interest in Apple's Mac OS X operating system. Sadly my sources would not let me attribute these assertions; PC executives are pretty leery of offending Microsoft , which holds enormous power over their businesses. So, many readers have challenged me on this point. Continue

Last Update Sep 11, 2005 Note, this is a work in progress, and I will accept commentary on this if you find something works better. If you are interested in just tips for upgrading your Mac, the Mac OS X Updating FAQ is now available. It includes a link to the clean install myth which is a discussion of the kinds of installation which can be done to Mac OS X. A serious bug (links to mirror of User Contributed FAQ on the bug) introduced by Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther's) more narrow definition of Firewire specs, requires specific firmware updates be given to Firewire drives before using with Panther or Apple's new Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) operating system. In addition it is recommended these drives not be connected during the software installation update. A new section on this FAQ discusses Tiger slowdowns If unsure as to which of these causes is slowing down your machine, ask a technician to help you isolate it before attempting to use any software to fix the issue. Many of the softwares recommended below have multipurpose functions, which may do other things you don't want to do to your system. Only use the software to solve the known issue you are having.
