Mac OS X vs. Linux: Could Apple Take a Bite Out of the Penguin?
by Chuck Toporek
Is Mac OS X a Threat to Linux?
On March 24, Apple Computer, Inc. released its next-generation operating system, Mac OS X (the "X" is pronounced as "ten," for the version number of the operating system) to Macintosh addicts around the world. While this isn't such a big deal to some, others view it as a new beginning that could squash all thoughts of a desktop Linux for the general public.

Best Practices Macintosh OS X Securing an OS X Desktop This document focuses on securing the MacOS X operating system (10.2 as of this writing), but much of the information works for MacOS 9 as well. No matter what operating system you're using, the basic steps for securing an operating system are the same:
  • Install all operating system patches. Verify user account security. Eliminate unnecessary applications and network services. Install and configure necessary applications and network services. Keep applications and operating system patches up to date.
Install the latest patches It's imperative that you connect to the network and immediately download and install the necessary patches for your operating system. Many security exploits prey on systems which are not kept up to date. Unpatched machines are frequently exploited within minutes of being attached to an open network like Stanford's.

A History of Apple's Operating Systems
Introduction
Mac OS X is a unique operating system in that it represents a rather successful coming together of paradigms, ideologies, and technologies that have usually resisted each other in the past. It is a result of the trials and tribulations of Apple and NeXT, as well as their user and developer communities. Mac OS X is perhaps one of the best examples of how a capable system can result through the direct or indirect efforts of corporations, academic and research communities, the Open Source and Free Software movements, and even individuals. Apple has been around since 1976, and many accounts of its history have been told. If the story of Apple as a company is fascinating, so is the "technical" story of Apple's operating systems. This document discusses operating systems that Apple has created in the past, and many that it tried to create. Through this discussion, we will come across several technologies the confluence of which eventually led to Mac OS X. An important goal of the discussion is to better understand the reasons, and if possible, the rationale behind Mac OS X and its important components. This, in turn, will be helpful in understanding and appreciating the system as it is today. My approach in this discussion is to have somewhat high magnitudes of the depth and breadth of historical coverage, as long as I believe the discussion is interesting and relevant from a system design perspective

OSUtil offers Director users the ability move files, copy files, delete, find paths to common directories. With OSUtil, you are given enough function calls that you could even make a complete installer program, entirely within Director.
Cost = $50 per platform

Grabber Grabber an Xtra for the Director user who may need to composite castmembers to create new images dynamically at run-time. With Grabber, Director users can capture specific regions of the screen, the entire users desktop, or the stage, and store those captures either as castmembers, or images native to the operating system upon which they were captured. (Windows=BMP, Macintosh=PICT)
Cost = $50 per platform
Functions and Download
DAOTable DAOTable is a Microsoft Windows 32bit (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT) Xtra, that makes a nice complement to the Datagrip Xtra by Sight-n-Sound Software. DAOTable allows you to look at the inner workings of a Microsoft Access Database that you will be using with Datagrip or exporting to another database engine. DAOTable allows you to see what tables are in the database, the fields in those tables, the queries in the database, and the sql statements that make up those queries. Because DAOTable is an add-on Xtra, the distribution of Microsoft Data Access Objects has not been included with this Xtra. Contact me if required.

    Mac OS X: Welcome to the jungle
    A look inside the Mac OS X software ecology
    By Chris J. Karr If software platforms are habitats, the Mac OS X platform is surely the jungle. Mac OS X is a modern Unix-based operating system that combines the classic Unix/X11 environment, a modern Java toolset and runtime, the classic Mac OS Carbon framework, and the NextStep-derivative Cocoa framework in an elegant and user-friendly operating environment. This diversity of strongly supported programming options, combined with Apple’s modern hardware and operating system, presents developers and users with a compelling platform for producing and using software packages. The continued success of the Macintosh platform is due in no small part to the different ways that developers from other environments can apply knowledge and experience from other platforms to produce Mac OS X applications
    Safari (Apple) is a Cocoa browser using the brushed-metal theme. It uses standard Cocoa widgets and styles, but does not make use of customizable toolbars or other advanced Cocoa UI elements

    Mac OS X Switcher Stories
    by Tim O'Reilly A few weeks ago, I wrote a weblog entry about Microsoft's perception that Mac OS X uptake is too slow , versus my experience that users are moving to OS X in droves. It became clear in the course of that conversation that Microsoft was looking at the OS X market only in terms of people moving from OS 9, where my experience has largely been with "switchers" people who are coming to OS X from some other platform. Apple's Switch ad campaign focuses on people making the switch from Windows, but it may be the case that there's an even larger wave of switchers from Linux and other Unix platforms. I decided to do an informal poll. I sent a message to Dave Farber's IP (Interesting People) mailing list , asking: I'd love to hear from IP readers who have adopted OS X. Were you switching from OS 9, Windows, Linux, or Unix? Are you still using your old system as well, or fully switched?
