Analysis: Macedonia's strained alliance
By Gordana Icevska SKOPJE, Macedonia The biggest victim of the fighting in Macedonia is trust among politicians and ordinary people from different ethnic backgrounds. As the fighting continues, people are becoming increasingly nervous and beginning to lose their patience. All Macedonian governments since the country's independence in 1990 have been multi-ethnic. IN-DEPTH Macedonia: Hurdles to peace Balkan hotspots Interactive map Macedonia's military ... In-Depth: Kosovo The current government, established in 1998, was impressive because it joined the nationalist Macedonian party, the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) and the radical ethnic Albanian party, the Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA). Both parties have moderated their policies and have compromised to find answers to the ethnic Albanian "minority question."

Similarity with Romanian
Anonymous 203.109.249.136 said:
Macedonian is NOT similar to Romanian in any way, i will leave this Balkan language league in here but I don't think its right.
Actually, there are quite a few similarities between Romanian and Bulgarian/Macedonian, although they are derived from different branches of the Indo-European tree (Italic and Slavic): look at Balkan language union for common grammatical features. There are also a few hundreds common words that do not derive from Latin nor Slavic and are probably of Thracian origin. Bogdan Talk 13:36, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I think it's misleading to say there are similarities when they merely share words; using this logic, you could say there are similarities between English and Italian.
Misleading? These four (or five) languages share similarities on a morphological, phonological and lexicological level, for more information you can take a look at Balkan language union , which though not full and exhaustve, gives an insight into the problem. And I'll ask you (and all other people who have no linguistic preparation) to refrain from making such comments (or changes in the article) unless they do some extensive reading before that.

Police threat to Macedonia peace
NATO collected rebel weapons while parliament delayed adopting reforms SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonian police units are to be deployed in rebel strongholds in the former Yugoslav republic, government officials have announced. But international mediators are attempting to persuade the interior ministry to drop the plan that could threaten the country's fragile peace process. Officers could be deployed in the rebel areas as early as Thursday before parliament has formally adopted its side of the peace agreement which includes granting amnesty to the ethnic Albanian rebels. The peace deal demands that rebels surrender weapons to a NATO force and that the Macedonia's parliament adopts constitutional changes giving greater rights to the country's ethnic Albanians. Rebels have handed in their weapons an operation called a resounding success by NATO but so far parliament has delayed adopting the reforms, which Western officials say must become law before government forces can retake control of the rebel strongholds.

Macedonia erupts in new violence
SKOPJE, Macedonia Three policemen have been killed and about 100 Macedonians abducted or held hostage in a sudden escalation of violence in the volatile Balkan country. After the first serious clashes since Macedonia's peace agreement was signed in August its Western overseers were scrambling to contain the crisis before it spiralled out of control and wrecked the accord. "We will do all we can today to calm the situation and get the political process back on track," an EU diplomat told Reuters on Monday. Bloodshed erupted on Sunday after special police units crossed unguarded cease-fire lines and secured an alleged mass grave site for exhumation while arresting a number of former ethnic Albanian guerrillas. EXTRA INFORMATION Macedonia: Hurdles to peace The three policemen who died were members of a special unit called "the Lions," police sources told the Associated Press. Another two policemen were seriously wounded in an ambush by ethnic Albanian rebels near the village of Trebos in the Tetovo area, the sources said.

of the Bulgarian historiography over Macedonian history and absurd denials Bulgaria of the Macedonian counterpart, contemporary Macedonian history
http://www.b92.net/casopis_rec/arhiva/daskalovskieng.html
Zhidas Daskalovski Given the past propensity of the neighboring states to compete for control over Macedonia, it does not come as a surprise that in the post-1989 period they attempted to undermine Republic of Macedoniaís statehood. By rejecting the attributes of the Macedonian nation such as its name, language, history, and ethnic make-up, all four Macedonian neighbors de facto forwarded claims on Macedonia, indirectly waiting its destruction. Interestingly enough, the international community, now as a century ago, did not take care about the interests of the Macedonians. Indeed, in the period between 1989 to 1999, the US and the EU did not support Macedonia when it was bullied by Greece and Bulgaria. Similarly, the international community showed indifference about the Macedonian problems in relations with Serbia and Albania. Hence, it seems that Macedonia is left to deal with its hostile neighborhood alone. If the pressure on Macedonia continues and if the Macedonian state is left alone to defend its national interests, then the prospects for the future existence of this nation are grim. Moreover, similarly to the situation on the eve of the Balkan Wars, the disintegration of Republic of Macedonia would leave its territory up for grabs by Macedoniaís neighbors. This scenario would mean that the possibility for new conflicts on the Balkans would dramatically increase. Seemingly then, Macedoniaís future should be of prime interest to the US and the international community. But, since in the past ten years the international community has not been too supportive of Macedonia, then we must ask the crucial question of our inquiry: how can Macedonia survive in such circumstances?

BIAE, Macedonia (CNN) Fighting between Yugoslav government troops and ethnic Albanian rebels has triggered an increased flow of refugees from Kosovo into Macedonia, with hundreds of them crossing the border on Monday. Officials said that about 100 people were crossing the border each hour. The refugees, carrying their belongings, said they no longer felt safe in Kosovo now that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe has pulled out its monitors. Many refugees spoke of nighttime fighting between Serbian police and members of the rebel Kosovo Liberation Army.

Refugees pour into Albania; few arrive in Macedonia
May 8, 1999

Web posted at: 5:23 p.m. EDT (2123 GMT)
MORINA, ALBANIA (CNN) The steady influx of refugees from Kosovo into Albania continued Saturday, with about 500 people arriving every hour, officials said. More than 5,000 refugees crossed the Morina checkpoint into Albania from Kosovo's western city of Pec , said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Officials with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe told CNN they've spotted a line of refugees more than six miles long from their vantage point on Albania's border with Kosovo The newly arrived refugees from Pec appeared very emotional and malnourished as they crossed the border, observers said. The UNHCR said the refugees have reported incidents of Serb attacks and mass killings in Pec.

NATO considers Macedonia fears
UNITED NATIONS NATO is considering allowing Yugoslav soldiers into a buffer zone that borders Macedonia in an effort to stamp out ethnic Albanian violence. Three soldiers have died in two days amid spiralling disturbances between ethnic Albanians seeking unification with Albania and security forces. From this experience, I have gained a stronger knowledge of the Greek language, one that would not have been possible without such immersion. Along the way, I made many meaningful friendships and had an opportunity to discuss global issues with students from all over the world. I find it hard to describe the peacefulness of learning a language in such a multi-ethnic environment. It was as if we were all the same in the process of learning a new medium in which we could communicate. Outside the classroom we would teach each other our native tongues, as well as talk about current issues in our countries.
