    A Turbulent Past
As a valuable territory at the crossroads of nations, Macedonia has a history of turmoil and conquest. Part of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, the region was at one time a province of Rome. A thousand years of Byzantine influence followed. Turkey then assumed control and remained in possession for five hundred years. After 1878, Macedonia was tugged back and forth by such countries as Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece-sometimes with each country ending up with a fragment of Macedonian territory. In 1914 the Serbian portion of Macedonia joined with Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro to form a country that would eventually be called Yugoslavia. During World War II, Bulgaria occupied the Macedonian portion of Yugoslavia, encountering fierce resistance from Macedonian freedom fighters. The republic of Yugoslavia survived the war, and in 1946, Macedonia became an autonomous region. In 1992 the country declared independence from Yugoslavia, and in 1993 became a member of the United Nations.

this article in Word-format. Abstract The Internet can be a very important vehicle for the transmission of ideas concerning a national identity, particular for people who have lost or left their homeland. Presenting it as very complete and historic enduring, going back for several thousand years emphasizes this identity. Completeness of the identity means presenting it with as many aspects as possible: art, culture, music, cuisine, flags, anthems, tourism, politics etc. These findings are derived from a small pilot study on 30 websites of Kurd, Armenian and Macedonian origin. Introduction: Internet users
The unequal distribution of Internet users is however somewhat superficial. When we look more closely at some of the users, it is clear there are many users from so-called 'underdeveloped Internet countries' on line. Immigrants, students and professionals, who left their countries of birth, devote much of their time (and webspace) to their region of origin. In this small research we will concentrate on this group of users: strangers in a strange land but keeping a close tie with their roots.

    Fresh violence in Macedonia
DEBELDE, Yugoslavia Further clashes have broken out on Macedonia's border with Kosovo, a day after three soldiers were killed. Troops in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia exchanged fire with ethnic Albanian guerrillas in the hills near Tanusevci, around 20 miles north of the capital Skopje. The renewed violence came as Bulgaria offered to send troops to Macedonia to try to secure stability in the region. And U.S. peacekeepers in neighbouring Kosovo sent helicopters and armoured vehicles to the Serbian border village of Debelde to patrol the area and observe all movements in Macedonia. MESSAGE BOARD Peace in the Balkans "We have indications that there are armed groups that have entered Kosovo and are using some of the villages around here to get out of their uniforms, leave their weapons behind and infiltrate the civilian population," said Major Jim Marshall, a spokesman for U.S. peacekeepers. "We are taking steps right now to prevent that from happening."

The rioting came after the funerals of the eight Macedonian soldiers and policemen who were killed at the weekend.

    Breakthrough at Macedonia talks
Leotard and Pardew are hopeful of a final peace deal being reached quickly OHRID, Macedonia (CNN) A peace agreement for Macedonia has moved closer after a tentative deal on the use of the Albanian language was reached on Wednesday. The language issue has been one of the key sticking points in negotiations to end months of fighting between ethnic Albanian rebels and the Macedonian government. The two sides are scheduled to gather again on Friday "with the aim of quickly reaching a final agreement on the remaining issues," an aide to U.S. envoy James Pardew told CNN. The ethnic Albanian leaders want the status of their language to be enhanced, but some on the government side fear it would be a step which could contribute to the break-up of the country. Among those remaining issues is the inclusion of Albanians in police patrols. Macedonia riots alarm EU
Wreckage from shops litters the streets of Bitola BRUSSELS, Belgium European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana has expressed his "deep alarm" over the latest rioting in Macedonia. Solana spoke out after ethnic Slavs went on the rampage in the ex-Yugoslav republic following the deaths of eight Macedonian soldiers at the hands of ethnic Albanian militants. A curfew was imposed on the city of Bitola late on Wednesday, the scene of some of the worst of the rioting. At least 10 shops in the ethnically-mixed city were destroyed on Tuesday, a night after dozens of buildings were damaged by young Slavs setting fire to them. "Such incidents risk disrupting the enhanced dialogue under the leadership of President Boris Trajkovski and are seriously endangering relations between the ethnic communities of the country."
