Clinton orders reinforcements to Macedonia
More Marines have been dispatched to protect U.S. embassy in Macedonia ALSO Belgrade area targeted in fourth day of NATO strikes
War Powers Act invoked
March 27, 1999
Web posted at: 5:31 a.m. EST (1031 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) President Clinton has dispatched 100 "combat equipped" Marines to help protect the besieged U.S. embassy in Macedonia. His order came after the embassy was attacked by an angry mob of Serb supporters demonstrating outside the mission Thursday in the wake of U.S.-led NATO airstrikes. Clinton's dispatch of the troops was advised in a letter to Congress on Friday formalizing his earlier order of U.S. troops into military combat. The letter is required under the U.S. War Powers Act. In explaining his action, Clinton said, "The Kosovo region is a tinderbox that could ignite a wider European war with dangerous consequences to the United States."

Refugee flow into Macedonia slows; Albania may take 1 million
May 9, 1999

Web posted at: 3:47 a.m. EDT (0747 GMT)
MORINA, ALBANIA (CNN) The Albanian government has agreed to take as many as 1 million refugees from Kosovo, according to special envoy Dennis McNamara of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In high level meetings, Albanian officials said they would take "as many refugees as necessary, as many as 1 million people if that is what it takes," McNamara said. The development came as Macedonia, which already has absorbed thousands of refugees, with many now housed in camps as large as cities, said it would close its borders to new arrivals until some of those already in Macedonia have moved out to new locations. CNN's Tom Mintier said on Sunday that the border crossing at Blace, Macedonia, formerly overflowing with refugees, was now nearly deserted.

One dead in Macedonia attack
SKOPJE, Macedonia A Macedonian policeman has been killed in a grenade attack on a convoy in an area near the border with Kosovo. Police in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia said a jeep was blown up in the Thursday evening attack, which came as NATO increased efforts to restore peace in the area amid increasing incursions by ethnic Albanian rebels. A senior Macedonian interior ministry official travelling in the convoy was unhurt in the attack, which sparked a gun battle lasting an hour, added a police spokesman. The incident came hours after the announcement of a NATO plan to allow Serb troops to resume patrols in the tense buffer zone between Kosovo and Macedonia, and after troops from the NATO-led KFOR force had cleared a border village of suspected ethnic Albanian rebels. The latest attack took place on the outskirts of the village of Brest, where interior ministry officials had been speaking with local ethnic Albanian inhabitants to try to calm tensions.

Soldiers killed in Macedonia
Ethnic Albanian businesses have been targeted by rioters SKOPJE, Macedonia Two Macedonian soldiers have been killed in clashes with ethnic Albanian rebels, a senior Macedonian government official has told Reuters. A further soldier was captured in the fighting early on Thursday, the news agency reported. The agency said the three men made up a border patrol which was returning from routine duty when it was ambushed near the village of Vakcince. The village, near Kumanovo, 35 kilometres (20 miles) northeast of the capital Skopje, is on a road leading to the area where Macedonia borders Kosovo and southern Serbia. The incident comes after ethnic Slavs went on the rampage following the deaths of eight Macedonian soldiers at the hands of ethnic Albanian rebels at the weekend. European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana has expressed his "deep alarm" over the rioting in Macedonia.

EU bid to boost Macedonia talks
Solana "wants to support the negotiations," his spokeswoman says OHRID, Macedonia One of Europe's top envoys is returning to Macedonia to boost peace talks aimed at ending fighting between government forces and ethnic Albanian rebels. Meanwhile, ethnic Albanian rebels launched several gun and mortar attacks against Macedonian police positions near the northwestern city of Tetovo, The Associated Press quoted the former Yugoslav republic's state-run radio as reporting. There were no reports of casualties in Saturday's reported attacks, which strained an already shaky truce signed last month to allow the talks to start. The talks are taking place at the lake resort of Ohrid. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, who has visited Macedonia several times over the past few months, was flying from Ukraine to Macedonia on Sunday to join the talks, according to his spokeswoman Christina Gallach. "He wants to support the negotiations at this particular moment," she said. "We hope for final progress as soon as possible."

Macedonia ceasefire aids evacuation
SKOPJE, Macedonia A brief ceasefire in Macedonia has allowed aid workers to evacuate dozens of sick and elderly civilians trapped by weeks of combat between the army and ethnic Albanian rebels. The International Committee of the Red Cross rescued 66 women, sick children and old men from the village of Lipkovo on Monday in the first such mercy mission it had been able to make in nine days. "They were selected by the local authorities to leave because they were the most vulnerable," said ICRC field co-ordinator Olivier Chow. "Some were old and some were sick." After overnight clashes following a weekend of bombardments, the army and insurgents agreed a four-hour pause in combat around the string of villages nestling under northern mountains which rebels have occupied for more than a month. "We were given adequate security guarantees by both sides to allow us to do this," Chow said.

Macedonia makes peace progress
The sister of the soldier killed on Tuesday weeps at his funeral SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonian leaders say they have agreed to base their search for a peace deal on proposals made by a French constitutional expert. President Boris Trajkovski said on Wednesday: "We have reached a significant deal which should give a fast advancement of the process," Reuters reported. He added that the French blueprint, which excludes the most radical Albanian demands, would form the basis for future debate. Politicians from Macedonia's divided ethnic groups resumed stalled peace talks on Tuesday and appear to have negotiated one major obstacle: demands by the Albanian minority for veto rights on key government decisions, Reuters reported. Advancements in negotiations came amid continued fighting. A soldier was killed on Tuesday when ethnic Albanian rebels ambushed a patrol near the capital, Skopje, bringing the number of soldiers killed in the insurgency to 34, an army spokesman told the Associated Press. Rights group accuses Macedonia
A NATO soldier examines weapons handed in by Albanian insurgents NEW YORK (CNN) A leading human rights group has accused the Macedonian government of committing "grave abuses" against ethnic Albanian civilians. Human Rights Watch (HRW), the largest human rights group in the Unitedd States, made the accusation in a report titled "Crimes Against Civilians: Abuses by Macedonian Forces in Ljuboten, August 10-12, 2001." Ethnic Albanian rebels began their insurgency against the Macedonian government in February, saying they were fighting for greater rights for the country's Albanian population, a third of Macedonia's two million people. Under a Western-backed peace plan signed last month, the rebels agreed to surrender their weapons to NATO forces, a process that began last week. Macedonia's Parliament is debating constitutional changes that would upgrade rights for the Albanian minority.

Adoption of the flag
Since its creation as a state in 1945, the Republic of Macedonia has used three flags. The first flag dates back to 1945 and the People's Republic of Macedonia, part of People's Federative Republic of Yugoslavia; it is red with a red five-pointed star outlined in yellow in the canton. The second flag , dated 1992, is red with a yellow 16-pointed sun, that Greece claimed is the sun of Vergina, found on the sarcophagus believed to belong to Filip, King of Macedonia.

Macedonia says rebels killed reporter
AP journalist Lawton was killed in an attack on Krivenik SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonia has laid the blame for the shelling of a village just inside Kosovo last week that killed two civilians, including a journalist, on rebel forces. Officially denying any involvement, Macedonia's army said an internal investigation showed its artillery gunners were out of range of the village. It said its forces had been given no orders to fire into Kosovo and were co-ordinating with NATO-led peacekeepers operating in the area at the time. Tuesday's statement called the shelling a "vicious setup" by ethnic Albanian rebels, the statement inferred to make it appear that Macedonian troops were responsible. IN-DEPTH Macedonia: Hurdles to peace Balkan hotspots Interactive map Macedonia's military ... In-Depth: Kosovo A commission of military experts concluded that although a Macedonian artillery unit had shelled a target nearby on the morning of the attack, the village of Krivenik, 1,200 yards inside Kosovo, lay outside its artillery range. The Macedonian gunners had a maximum range of 4,000 yards, and the village was 5,400 yards away, the army statement said.
