This website, dedicated to cultural tourism in macedonia, was given its name Come to Welcome from the Minister of culture of Republic of macedonia
http://www.culture.org.mk/default-e.htm
Instead of an introduction (This is a rather lengthy text, but we urge you to read it. Still, if you want to go directly to the contents of this site, please click here But, at the moment when we publish this site (June 1, 2001), the title "Come to Macedonia and Your Heart Will Remain Here" sounds very different. Cynical. Even sinister. It is clear that this year the Macedonian hospitality will not welcome the guests that it longed for. Macedonia is a hot topic for the world, but regarding something very different from the subject of this web-site. Tragically, many young people gave their hearts (their lives) for Macedonia, and their families and the entire state is left in mourning. We dedicate the web-site "Come to Macedonia and Your Heart Will Remain Here" to all the people that, in the first year of the third millennia, gave their lives for Macedonia, who were killed in the ridiculous attacks of the forces bereft of reason. Also, we dedicate it to all people who do not surrender to this absurdity, but who still make all their noble efforts for the benefit of peace, friendship, democracy, love, humanity, culture. To all Macedonian children and all Macedonian parents of all religions and nationalities, who fight to preserve Macedonia, who fight with their guns or with their creations. To Macedonia, the country where the words respect and tolerance were more than shallow phrases. The country that has managed, as stale and prosaic as it may sound, to remain the oasis of peace on the turbulent Balkans.

Macedonian Connection - Worldwide Business Directory

The situation in which Macedonia finds itself today can be traced back to the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. As a result of the Treaty of Bucharest, Macedonia was partitioned among Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria. These regions are known as the Republic of Macedonia (independent since 1991), Aegean Macedonia (presently within the borders of Greece), and Pirin Macedonia (within the borders of Bulgaria). A small part of Macedonia was given to Albania in 1919 (known as Mala Prespa and Golo Brdo). Upon annexation of Macedonia's territory, each country began terrorist campaigns aimed at expelling or forcibly assimilating the indigenous Macedonian population. Greece, in particular, began an intense campaign in order to eradicate the existence of Macedonia through a horrific policy of cultural genocide and ethnic cleansing. They outlawed the term Macedonia and proceeded to rename this region "Northern Greece". They changed the names of Macedonian people, villages, and landmarks from Macedonian to Greek. Bulgaria and Greece continue to deny the existence of their large Macedonian minorities to this day and refuse to grant them human rights. The human rights violations have been well-documented. Albania offers its Macedonian minority limited human rights but the situation does not compare to the human rights and freedoms enjoyed by the Albanian minority in the Republic of Macedonia.

Wine, Religion and Culture
The cultivation of the vine, the creation of wine from the grape and the effects of wine-drinking on the human organism have always inspired a sense of awe in humanity, and this is why they have been associated with the divine. In the ancient world the god associated with wine was Dionysus, a rural deity who was worshipped particularly in Macedonia and Thrace, where the twelve principal gods of Greek mythology were not venerated with the same enthusiasm as in southern Greece. Depictions of Dionysous in ancient mosaics One of the myths has it that Dionysus was born on Mt. Pangaion and lived there, worshipped by the Edonians, a Thracian tribe. According to another myth Semele dwelled on the slopes of Mt. Vermion, where she gave birth to Silenus, who was later captured by Midas. In certain areas of Macedonia and of Thrace Dionysus was represented in earlier times in the form of an animal, the relic of a totemic habit of thought. His cult was particularly strong in Pangaio and Kissos, together with the Maenads, who are referred to as Klodones and Mimallones. The cult of the Maenads survived into later times in Macedonia, until the end of the ancient world, and some aspects of their rites were adopted in the theatre. The troupe of Maenads, very popular in Macedonia, consisted of women, while the leader of the chorus was a man, who wore cothornos (buskins)

    HISTORY
The city of Skopje for the first time has been mentioned by Klaudie Diolomej, under its ancient name "Skupi" . In the III century B.C. Skupi was founded by the Dardanians, and later with the coming of the Romanians it came under their rule. In this period, the city experienced real bloom on several fields, it became a large religious centre with its own bishop. In the year of 518 the city was destroyed by a disastrous earthquake. Wonderful architectonic buildings, numerous public baths and the antic amphitheatre built in a roman style, large basilica with mosaic floors have completely disappeared from the earth’s face. Since then Skupi is not mentioned any more. The Skopje valley got a new city centre called "Justinijana Prima". By the end of the VI century, in front of the ramparts of the city the Slavic people have showed up, which th Later, Skopje begins to change its appearance. After the First World War on the right side of the river Vardar a modern city has been built. 26 th of July 1963 is remembered as the longest day in the history of the city. Strong earthquake, of two severe and a few weaker shocks, turned the city into ruins. Numerous cultural monuments were seriously damaged or erased from the face of the earth. In today’s conditions the city is experiencing its own renaissance for many times in its history.
