Macedonia Time and Date Macedonia ( Yugoslav Republic ) Culture Back to Top orthodox families were large, the new urban families are small, particularly among the population that is not ethnic Albanian. The society is traditionally patricentric, with Orthodox Christianity exerting a strong determine among the non-Muslim population. orthodox clothing is colorful, with valuable embroidery, but folk costumes are no longer worn by many people, who dress instead like other southern Europeans. orthodox foods have much in common with those elsewhere in the Balkans, favoring breads and roasted meats. The republic produces excellent fruits and vegetables and is famous for its peppers. The wines are very good and are being increasingly produced for export. As might be expected in a nation with such a various population, the cultural life of the FYROM is valuable. Folk music draws on Byzantine traditions as well as those associated with the Muslim cultures of the Middle East. Current popular music groups have drawn on this mixed heritage to produce strikingly original music. Many of the Orthodox Christian monasteries and churches are decorated with beautiful frescoes and other works of art. In 1995 a FYROM film, Before the Rain, gained recognition in the United States and was a finalist for an Academy Award in the best foreign-language film category. An internationally renowned gathering of poets is held every year in Struga, on the shores of Lake Ohrid.

The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI), based in Flensburg, Germany, announces the conclusion of the project ECMI NGO Network for the Improvement of Interethnic Relations in the Republic of Macedonia.
The ECMI NGO Network was established in 2001 as a member-driven Network aimed at improving interethnic relations by development of cooperation among member NGOs in identifying common ground for action on issues related to advancing interethnic dialogue in the Republic of Macedonia. Furthermore, this Network of 78 grass-root NGOs aimed at enhancing the credibility of the NGOs among their local communities and at strengthening the capacity through conceptualization and implementation of joint projects. In order to achieve these aims six Regional Centres at Skopje , Kumanovo, Tetovo, Gostivar, Bitola and Shtip were established as neutral grounds for all NGO members in developing, coordinating and implementing joint projects on issues that cut across ethnic ties. The Network established its own organizational structure headed by the Coordinative Body, composed of 13 members, 12 chosen on the grounds of different regional and ethnic affiliations and 1 ECMI representative, which served as the network facilitator.

Fresco-icons
In the churches of this and later periods, besides frescoes 'hung' on walls we can find fresco-icons linked to the iconography of the iconostasis. When discussing the church of St. Sophia in Ohrid, special attention should be drawn to the fresco-icons painted on the columns at the level of the iconostasis. There are two large fresco-icons dedicated to the Mother of God with the Infant Jesus in her arms, that on the north column being of the type of the Mother of God of Sorrows. Fresco-icons cannot be discussed without mention of those painted in the church of St. Panteleimon at Nerezi, near Skopje, dating from 1164. Here, as in the church of St. Sophia in Ohrid, there are two types of icons: those 'hung' on the walls and those 'framed' on the columns framing the iconostasis. The icons 'hung' on the walls of the church of St. Panteleimon, Nerezi, are to be found in the north chapel and in the proskomide, while the frescoes painted on pillars, with rich stucco-work frames, form a whole together with the iconostasis. In 1317 the well-known medieval painters Michael and Eutychios painted fresco-icons dedicated to the patron saint of the church, St. George, and to the Mother of God Pelagonitisa on the surfaces created in the iconostasis after the walling up of the intercolumnar spaces. Some years later, they painted the fresco-icon dedicated to St. Nicetas in the church of the same name in the village of Banjani, near Skopje. There are in existence numerous fresco-icons which were painted in the churches of Macedonia from the eleventh up to the close of the fifteenth centuries.

W ork on the construction of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki began in February 1961, to designs by the architect Patroklos Karantinos. The building was inaugurated on 27th October 1962, during the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Thessaloniki. In 1971, the displays were brought to completion in all the rooms. They included sculpture, a prehistoric collection, miniature art of the Archaic and Classical periods, and the brilliant group of finds from the tombs at Derveni , which was first presented to the public on the day of the inauguration ceremony. A few years later, in 1978, the astonishing discoveries at Vergina led to the first changes in the display: finds from the royal tombs were exhibited in the rooms housing the prehistoric collection and miniature art as part of the exhibition “Treasures of Ancient Macedonia”. T he treasures from Vergina, and other precious discoveries of the 70’s, made the construction of an extension to the Museum inevitable: the new wing was inaugaurated in July 1980 with the exhibition “Alexander the Great”. This same year saw the begininng of the excavation of the cemetey at Sindos, with its rich finds of gold, and the " Sindos " exhibition was opened to the public in October 1982.

Barbarism and the Erasure of Culture
The destruction of Sveti Anastasi
by Christopher Deliso
August 24, 2001
W hen the revered fourteenth-century Monastery of Sveti Anastasi in Leshok was blown up earlier this week, Macedonian Government Spokesman Antonio Milososki summarized the event concisely: "This," he said, "is barbarism." Milososki's simple statement captured the essence of the matter: that the destruction of such a historical and cultural treasure as the Leshok Monastery was an act that could only be described as barbaric, a thoughtless, misanthropic destruction of a unique and irreplaceable piece of the common European heritage. Yet for all its ignorance, this act meant something more than a bunch of unemployed young terrorists playing with explosives (though such individuals no doubt executed the destruction). It was a deliberate attempt to erase any trace of Macedonia's historical continuity, to wipe the presence of the past clear off the map. As such, the destruction of the Leshok Monastery was a calculated attempt by Albanian terrorists to exert their territorial dominance, by obliterating a valuable part of Macedonian heritage, a treasure of art and religion that had been listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

Arr. by Naat Veliov A certain genius particular to Gypsy musicians and the Rom people has allowed them to adopt and transform the indigenous music of the regions they traverse, thus facilitating the integration and evolution of musical styles and songs specific to various cultures and ethnic groups. Destined to their role as professional musicians as a secondary result of their social status, the Rom people have often been the exclusive source of traditional music, as well as faithful mirror to the culture of the country they inhabit, across the ages. But at the same time, thanks to their travels, they have developed the capacity to mix a multitude of sources and transform them into a style that is uniquely their own. Contrary to the preconceived notion that Gypsies are gifted with a capacity for imitation, they have always forged a music with their own very distinct character, even though they have continually been forced to deal with the necessity of adapting to local demand. With the Rom people, playing music has always been synonymous with creating it.

Macedonian Customs You Should Be Aware Of
  • When you go to visit a friend, you should take a gift, like flowers, chocolates or fruit, and a special toy or candy for each of the children of the house. When you give flowers they should be in bouquets with ODD numbers, not even. Bouquets of flowers with even numbers of flowers are only taken to funerals. Macedonians generally do not plan too far ahead, or confirm their plans until right before the event. So, almost every conversation regarding possible plans ends with, "OK, so we'll hear each other", meaning you need to call and talk to each other again before the event. Macedonians most often drink Turkish coffee, and ethnic Albanians usually drink Russian Tea. When you have had enough tea be sure and turn your spoon upside down on top of your glass, or they will just keep pouring! Bread is a major part of the diet here, and it's said that the average household eats one loaf of bread per person per day.

    Cultural Wealth
Macedonia is a treasury of cultural wealth. The Slavonic alphabet was born in Macedonia, where the Macedonian educators Cyril and Methody , and Clement and Naum played an important part in the spread of Christianity. Macedonian builders and mosaic masters shone like a bright star in the dark period of European culture prior to the Renaissance. Scholars and writers often refer to Macedonia as a magical country for archaeology - there are many historical sites, including those at Stobi (Gradsko), Heraclea Lyncestis (Bitola), Lychnidos (Ohrid) and Scupi (Skopje). In the site of Vinicko Kale (near Vinica), the discovery of terracotta icons aroused great interest among historians and archaeologists. The Basilica Mosaic in Heraclea Lyncestis is one of the most famous mosaics of antiquity. There are many remains from Roman times and the early Christian period. Macedonian cities have an imposing number of churches. The famous architects and fresco-painters worked on numerous churches, and in Ohrid alone their number exceeds 30. Lake Ohrid and the town of Ohrid are under the protectin of UNESCO. Several churches, the most renowned among which is St. Pantelejmon, bear witness to the times of the educator St. Clement. The churches and other cultural monuments built between the 11th and 12th cenbturies are characterized by unique architecture and priceless frescoes and icons, famous throughout the world.
