Macaws Without Borders Biologists estimate that there are fewer than 800 remaining scarlet macaws left in the wild in the three countries of Mexico, Belize and Guatemala! In 2000, a consortium of NGOs and GOs came together to form the Guacamayas Sin Frontera (Macaws Without Borders) Group with the aim of conserving these last wild populations of scarlet macaws in the area. The group consists of ARCAS, the National Council of Protected Areas, PROPETEN (CI), Defensores de la Naturaleza (an NGO administering Sierra Lacondon, Aviarios Mariana (a private breeding facility) and WCS. More recently, this joint effort has been expanded to include counterparts in Mexico and Belize making it a unique tri-national conservation effort.
ARCAS's assigned role in this effort is to carry out captive-breeding and rearing using the non-releasable macaws in the Rescue Center, collaborate in the re-enforcement of native populations and to rehabilitate weak, injured or orphaned chicks.

Costa Rica's Macaws
by Steve Ginsberg
BIRDING FORUM
COSTA RICA FORUM
COSTA RICA Monteverde's resplendent quetzal is the avian magnet for ecotourists worldwide, but it is the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) that is the country's most spectacularly endangered bird. Despite its reputation as eco-nirvana, Costa Rica's deforestation and poaching for the pet trade have reduced the once abundant Scarlet Macaws to three breeding territories and less than 1,000 birds. Costa Rica's other macaw; the Great Green (Ara ambigua) is even more endangered down to an estimated 30 breeding pairs. Hope for saving Costa Rica's macaws comes partially from an unlikely source-a retired American couple in their 70s with dwindling finances. Margot and Richard Frisius came to Costa Rica in 1980 in the first wave of the American pensionado movement. Their plan was to enjoy their eight-acre ranch, the former estate of British botanist Sir Charles Lankester the bromeliad- laden Flor de Mayo. Richard's hobby was collecting macaws and he dreamed of owning each of the world's 16 species. Richard ran Pan Am's maintenance operation in Guyana and came to Costa Rica with just a few birds. His hobby grew into an obsessive mission to give something back to his adopted country.

Military Macaws By Tequila Sepulveda An often overlooked member of the macaw family, Ara Militaris , the Military Macaw, makes a splendid pet. You may have heard that Militaries have a reputation for being nippy and unmanageable. This could be true of any psitticine not adequately socialized and trained. When a Military knows what his boundaries are, he has the potential to be almost as cuddly as any member of the cockatoo family. There are three subspecies of the Military Macaw, the nominate Ara M. Macaws
Although Macaws are generally thought of as large parrots, the species actually includes members that range from the Hahns macaw that is no larger that a conure to the Hyacinth Macaw that can exceed 42 inches in length. The smaller macaws are generally referred to as "mini" macaws. The smaller members are often described as having similar characteristics and temperament of the larger macaws, but I, personally, do not agree. Chihuahuas and Great Danes are both dogs, but they are not at similar in temperament. The smaller dogs are much more active and have a tendency to be more nippy. The same is true of the parrots. The mini macaws are also nice pets, but they are much more "active" than the larger macaws. They are also very animated, and have a tendency to be a bit noisier and nippier.

BLUE AND YELLOW MACAW
Click on the image to return to the gallery The Blue and Yellow Macaw, also called the Blue and Gold Macaw ( Ara ararauna ) is one of seven species of Amazon macaws. Macaws differ from parrots in having a patch of bare skin at the base of the bill. In the Amazon, you may see these birds around lodges and hotels where they are attracted by food. At some lodges they are free to come and go, and this gives a good opportunity to observe them up close in relatively natural conditions. However, these birds do poorly in captivity and should not be kept as pets.
SCARLET MACAW
Click on the image to return to the gallery The Scarlet Macaw ( Ara macao ) is the quinessential Amazon bird. As with other parrots it is adept at using its claws to feed on hard nuts, which its powerful beak can easily crack open. They like to eat palm nuts, but in captivity they also eat fruit such as bananas and papaya. In the wild, macaws flock to exposed river banks to eat red clay (see parrot clay lick ). Why they do this is uncertain. It may be to get additional minerals or, as some scientists believe, it is to detoxify the poisons ingested when the parrots eat certain seasonal plants.

http://hyacinthmacaw.org/otrMacs.html
Other Macaws
Macaws are medium-sized to extremely large, long-tailed parrots of the New World that share certain physical characteristics. Which New World parrots should qualify to be called macaws and which should not is somewhat controversial. Some feel that neither the Spix's nor the Red-shouldered are true macaws. Helmut Sick eliminated all of the miniature macaws, stating that they are better grouped with the Aratinga parakeets. The Brazilian names for macaw are ara and arara, both descriptive of their vocalizations. Sick felt that a parrot that failed to vocalize a macaw name failed the macaw test. Some feel that the Golden Parakeet (Conure) is really a macaw in disguise (its scientific name is Guaruba guaruba, and is derived from the Tupi language that translates to yellow macaw). Others suggest that the Thick-billed and closely related Maroon-fronted Parrots are really small, short-tailed macaws. Some books even call them "Macawlets." One characteristic that "accepted" macaws share is the presence of a bare facial patch, very prominent in most, not so prominent in others. This is the characteristic that the "would-be" macaws lack and some of the "might-not-be" have. Long a major determining factor in whether a parrot made the macaw list, it may eventually prove to not be so important.
The total number of macaw species that have inhabited the earth is unknown. Certainly, at least two species have become extinct in modern times, the Glaucus and Cuban. There are rumors of other species having inhabited the islands of the Caribbean, but the Cuban Macaw is the only one represented by museum specimens. As of now, 18 species of macaws have been recognized. The Cuban Macaw was last recorded in 1864 and there are no proven records of the Glaucus Macaw beyond 1860. This leaves us 16 extant species of parrots accepted as being macaws. However, the Spix's Macaw is known from only one naturally wild specimen, a male which has paired with a female Blue-winged Macaw (potential mates from captivity have been released, but their fate is in question). There may be other populations of this bird in northeastern Brazil. If not, it will almost surely go extinct in the wild (there are a few in captivity) in the 21st century.

To Other Macaws
The Hyacinth Macaw ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus ) is one of 16 living species of macaws and the largest parrot in the world. There are six genera of macaws and the Hyacinth is one of three species of the genus Anodorhynchus . One of the other two species of this genus is thought to be extinct ( A. glaucus , the Glaucus Macaw) and the other ( A. leari , called either the Lear's or Indigo Macaw) is severely threatened. Anodorhynchus macaws (an=no, odo=tooth, rhynchus=nose). There are two bare areas of the face, a prominent and deeply golden colored eye ring and the peri-mandibular area making a beautiful contrast with the rich blue plumage. Both observations in the wild and of captive-bred individuals confirm that immatures have similar plumage to adults and that they are very slow to reach independence. The Hyacinth Macaw's historical range included a large area of northeastern, central and southwestern Brazil, eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay. Today, it is know from the interior of northeastern Brazil, central and southwestern Brazil, easternmost Bolivia and, some claim, extreme northeastern Paraguay. The outline of the range has not contracted much, but the number of individuals is much reduced. Recent estimates of the number surviving in the wild have ranged from 2,500 to 5,000. Persecution has taken the form of illegal pet trade and hunting for food and feather (see photos of Indian crafts). The high value of these birds in captivity ($7,000-$10,000 in the United States) has driven illegal trade in Brazil long after they received legal "protection."

Hi welcome to THE KIDS PAGE. As you have probably guessed by now the kids are exotic birds. Twelve to be exact. Nine Greenwing Macaws, Mom (Red), Dad (Sly) and seven babies that they presented to me. The names of the seven babies are: Parrot Mason, Sherlock, Columbo, Wallenda, Kamikaze, Genji, and Kenji. Included are also a Hyacinth Macaw, Devon, a Blue & Gold, Kokomo (Moee), and Morrigan the Moluccan Cockatoo. They are quite a handful and a very amusing bunch. They are always into mischief and always learning new things. Take a trip through our little wonderland and learn more about us. This picture is of "Devon".

Song being played = Gone Away Gone Away is dedicated to Sherlock's clutchmate and sister. She was only five months old when she died of visceral gout, I didn't even have time to name her but I called her my Loving Baby Girl because she would jump out of her cage into my arms she loved me so much. Her passing caused me a great deal of heartache and she is sorely missed. Also it is dedicated to a chick that did not make it to a day old, don't know what went wrong but the poor thing passed away. Both of these birds are now in Macaw heaven and I hope they are living the happy lives they would have had on earth with me.
