Information here for School Reports!
Many macaw lovers would like to see macaws in the wild but imagine that it's far beyond their means to do so. If you take a fancy tour it may well be. However if you go on your own or with a few friends, the cost will, in general, be halved. It's perfectly easy these days to do this due to the excellent guide books now available. You can stay twice as long for half the money and not be rushed or pushed around. These tour companies make big profits! My own favourite guide book is the "Lonely Planet" series but there are others. Television programmes that imply that the location of some site is in a difficult to reach place are almost invariably lies. If they can get there with camera crew and some foppish tv personality so can you! This website is about how and where to go, who will help and the likely costs. There are tourist industries in every country in South America. There are descriptions of our trips at the end of this page. Having been on several journeys to South and Central America to see macaws, I have been forced to the sad conclusion that the only hope for these magnificent creatures in the wild is eco-tourism. You will find endless scientific material on the internet pontificating on various statistics but in the field in the end only money and population pressure counts. In the third world the only thing that will save the wild macaws is if they are perceived to have monetary value by the local people, ie tourist potential. The alternative is that their habitat will be destroyed and they will die or be captured for the pet trade. This is the reason for this webpage. Until you've seen hundreds of large macaws in flight you haven't seen anything. Be quick though, I feel despondent about how long it will be possible to see this incredible sight.

MACAWS AS COMPANIONS
Part 1: Buying A Pet Macaw
By Joanne Abramson
Reprinted from The Pet Bird Report
Pick up any photographic parrot book and it is hard not to stop at a photo of a macaw. They are flamboyant, colorful, and captivating birds. Their personalities are legendary. Because of their great beauty and engaging personalities, they have been kept in captivity for centuries. In fact, in the United States, they were kept by the Pueblo Indians since 1100 A.D. where they prized the Scarlet Macaw. After months or years of seeing colorful macaws in picture and pet shops, perhaps you have decided to take the plunge and buy one. There are so many species of large macaws. Which one is right for you?
Selection
Choosing you first macaw will be your biggest challenge. With so many beautifully colored birds vying for your attention it can be difficult to decide. Talking with owners of macaws might help, but don't be surprised if they adore the species they have chosen. Each person is likely to try to convince you of his or her own macaws esteemed merits. Your final decision should be based on your lifestyle, the bird's health, and its availability. Cost is always a consideration but realize that if the bird has been raised by the breeder and comes with a health check from an avian veterinarian, the cost will be slightly higher. Over the last ten years the availability of domestic raised birds has finally provided tame, healthy birds for breeding and for pets.

Seventeen species of these birds can be found in the wild today, in Central and South America. They are typically brightly coloured, with large beaks and long tails.
Habitat and diet
Macaws live in a wide variety of habitats, from tropical rainforests to arid regions, but they are normally found near rivers or streams. Their varied diet includes fruit, seeds, nectar and nuts, which they open with their strong beaks. Macaws will often fly long distances in the search for ripe fruit and nuts.
Nesting sites
The favoured nesting sites for macaws are holes in trees - particularly natural holes in dead trees - or cavities in cliff faces. Some species, notably the hyacinth macaw, nest in burrows excavated with their beaks. Scientists think that macaws mate for life, producing one to three young each year. The young are relatively slow to develop, remaining in the nest for up to four months, and staying with their parents until the next breeding season.

Pet Macaws
By Joanne Abramson from Raintree Macaws Easily distinguished from amazons and cockatoos by their bare facial patch and long pointed tail, the macaw family comprises one of the most extravagantly colored in the bird world. Provided they are given a healthy diet, allowed freedom and given lots of attention they will be a life long companion. It is because of this longevity that deciding on a pet macaw should not be taken lightly. Most captive bred birds are closed banded. Closed banding means the bird has had a bracelet-like steel or aluminum band (with a letter and number code stamped on it) put on its leg. This band's code tells where the bird was bred and has an unique number for that bird. The band is soldered shut and cannot be put on the bird after it is about two weeks old, depending on the species. Selection

In the end the decision should be based on your lifestyle, the bird's health and availability. Six of the large macaws will be discussed in this article. Species
Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna): Commonly kept in captivity and understandably popular the Blue and Golds are playful, fun loving birds. Their availability in captivity has erroneously lead to the belief that they are unremarkable. Too often they have been hybridized with other species. Perhaps the most commonly available large macaw. Their personality is ideal. They adapt easily to new surroundings. As with all the large macaws they are highly sociable and quickly become members of the family.

20. MACAWS, An Airborne Coherent Doppler Laser Radar (Lidar) For Wind And Aerosol Ba
Remote sensing of winds and aerosols using a coherent doppler lidar instrument on a NASA DC8 research aircraft.
http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/macaws/
The MACAWS program is no longer active, these pages are being maintained for informational use. Welcome to the MACAWS homepage! If you are unfamiliar with the concept of coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) to measure atmospheric winds and aerosols, then see our handy list of definitions to some key words and concepts. Then, come on back and enjoy the rest of this page!
What is MACAWS?
The M ulti-center A irborne C oherent A tmospheric W ind S ensor (MACAWS) is an airborne, pulsed, scanning, coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) that remotely senses the distribution of wind velocity and aerosol backscatter within three-dimensional volumes in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. MACAWS, presently configured to fly on the NASA DC-8 research aircraft , was developed jointly by the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups of NASA Global Hydrology and Climate Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Nearly all of the MACAWS hardware components were developed for previous atmospheric research programs. The re-use of these field-tested components has resulted in considerable cost savings to the Government. Interagency cooperation among the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups also ensures that research activities are both scientifically synergistic and cost-effective. For example, the MACAWS laser transmitter is that of the highly successful mobile ground-based Doppler lidar ("Windvan") developed by NOAA ETL and deployed for a number of experiments.
