Lyme disease is an infection that's spread by Ixodes ticks (black-legged or deer ticks in the eastern United States, and western black-legged ticks in the west) that carry the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi . These ticks acquire the bacteria from mice and then infect humans by biting them and passing the bacteria into a person's bloodstream. These ticks are smaller than dog ticks and harder to detect. Immature ticks, or nymphs, are about the size of a poppy seed; adult ticks are the size of a sesame seed. The majority of reported Lyme disease cases occur in the northeastern and upper midwestern areas of the United States because these two zones and the Pacific Northwest are the natural habitat of the Ixodes tick and its carriers. Some cases of Lyme disease have also been reported in the southeastern and southern midwestern states, although the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) considers these low-risk areas. According to CDC, the states that report the most cases of Lyme disease are:
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Wisconsin
Some cases of Lyme disease have also been reported in Asia, northern and southern Europe, and parts of Canada.

What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease was first recognized in the United States in 1975, after a
mysterious outbreak of arthritis near Lyme, Connecticut. Children in the town began having arthritis-like symptoms. Medical researchers soon recognized the illness as a distinct disease, which they called Lyme disease. What causes it? A type of arthritis with a known cause! Lyme is an infection that is transmitted via the bite of a deer tick. The tick is infected with a spiral-shaped bacterium or spirochete known as Borrelia burgdorferi. What are the symptoms?

Lyme Disease
  • Lyme disease is a rapidly emerging bacterial infection that is spread to people by the bite of infected ticks. Lyme disease can cause a rash, flu-like symptoms, and aching joints. Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. Without treatment, Lyme disease can cause serious, long-term health problems. To prevent Lyme disease: 1) protect yourself from tick bites, 2) remove attached ticks promptly, and 3) get early diagnosis and treatment.
What is Lyme disease? Lyme disease is an infection transmitted by the bite of certain, very small, infected ticks. Lyme disease gets its name from the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where the illness was first identified in the United States in 1975. What is the infectious agent that causes Lyme disease? Lyme disease is caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacterium, or spirochete, called Borrelia burgdorferi . Ticks infected with the bacterium spread the disease to humans. Where is Lyme disease found? Cases of Lyme disease have been reported by nearly every state in the United States, but the disease is concentrated in the east coastal states, the north central states, and northern California. Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Wisconsin account for about 90% of all cases. In the Northeast and Great Lakes region, Lyme disease is spread by the black-legged tick, which lives in wooded areas, grasslands, and yards. In the Pacific Northwest, the disease is spread by the western black-legged tick. In the Southeast, the disease is thought to be spread by the black-legged tick.

In the spring and summer, you might hear about something called Lyme disease. It has nothing to do with limes, but it does have something to do with ticks , those creepy, tiny bugs that like to drink human blood. Disgusting!
Blame Lyme disease on those blood suckers because some of them carry around bacteria. And if the bacteria get in a person, they can cause the infection Lyme disease. The bacteria are called spirochetes (say: spy -ruh-keets). The best way to prevent Lyme disease is to prevent tick bites. Let's find out more about this disease and how to keep those ticks away. Ticks Want to Suck Your Blood
Ticks feed on mice, dogs, horses, and sometimes people. They have eight legs, but are so tiny, they might look like a speck of dirt or the head of a pin. You're most likely to run into them in grassy or wooded areas. In spring and summer, you're more likely to have a lot of skin exposed (like when you're wearing shorts and a T-shirt), so it gives ticks a lot of opportunity to latch on to your skin. You don't feel anything when the tick first bites you. You probably won't even know the tick is feeding. After an infected tick bites you, it pumps water out of its mouth to lower its body weight (it's heavier from the blood it's just sucked out of you). Then the tick spits the spirochetes into you. If the tick has been there a while (more than a day), you might get Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease Overview
Lyme disease, sometimes referred to as Lyme infection, is a bacterial illness, transmitted to humans by the bite of deer ticks ( Ixodes ticks) carrying a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi . The disease has been reported in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, North Central, and Pacific coastal regions of the United States and in Europe, where it was first described almost 100 years ago. It is most prevalent in the northeastern states of the United States, with about half of all cases clustered in New York and Connecticut. Doctors at New Haven's Yale Medical Center first described and named Lyme disease in the United States in the late 1970s. An unexpected number of residents in Lyme, Connecticut, were found to have a "new" and unusual illness.
  • Fortunately, less than 5% of tick bites in high-contact areas result in Lyme infections. Doctors have learned a great deal about the illness since that original cluster of people was observed. Treatments are available for Lyme disease (see Medications and Prevention

FDA panel backs Lyme disease vaccine
The LYMErix vaccine
May 26, 1998
Web posted at: 11:18 p.m. EDT (0318 GMT) BETHESDA, Maryland (CNN) Government scientists cautiously recommended Tuesday that the first vaccine against Lyme disease be approved for sale in the United States. The vaccine, called LYMErix, requires three shots over a year's time and is about 80 percent effective. The advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration added several warnings to its approval of LYMErix: it should not be used by children under 16 or people with chronic arthritis, and no one should receive booster shots until the drug's maker, SmithKline Beecham, completes further study. The FDA is not bound by the panel's recommendations but typically follows them. Because Lyme disease is a serious threat in parts of the country, "the benefits are on the side of the vaccine in the short term," said Dr. Dixie Snider of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "In the long term, we don't know."

Two vaccines found equally effective against Lyme disease
Ticks
July 22, 1998
Web posted at: 9:04 p.m. EDT (2104 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) The spread of Lyme disease, a tick-borne disease that infects thousands of Americans each year, may soon be under attack from two new vaccines. Results of a preliminary tests, published in this week's New England Journal of Medicine, shows competing vaccines LYMErix, produced by SmithKline Beecham, and ImuLyme, made by Pasteur Merieux Connaught, appear equally effective in protecting against the disease. Ticks, often no larger than pinheads, spread the Lyme disease germ that strikes 10,000 Americans a year, mostly in the Northeast. Left untreated, it can lead to arthritis and even life-threatening complications. The two vaccines await government approval, and neither is on the market yet. In May, a Food and Drug Administration advisory council recommended LYMErix. ImuLyme is up for review.
