The LDF board meets quarterly to review and provide input into all LDF programs and activities.
The New Jersey and Midwest Task Forces conduct public and professional education programs, have input into public policy programs, and partner with public health officials. Each leader is active in their state's government tick-borne disease programs. Roberta Bethencourt, MSW, the NJ leader, is a social worker and is on the NJ Governor's LD Task Force. Renee Thaler, the Midwest leader, is a political consultant, works in partnership with the Illinois Department of Health, and has been successful in enacting LD legislation in Illinois. In 2002 the LD Community Caucus was established with these members, along with the Lyme Disease Society and Michigan Lyme Disease Association. This new group of people work together to present one unified voice to government officials on tick-borne issues.

Educational Resource Guide #01 Lyme Disease and Tick Management
by Barb Ogg, Ph.D., Extension Educator L yme disease is caused by a bacteria that is carried and transmitted through bites from several species of ticks. This disease was first recognized in 1976 and has now occurred in 47 states, including Nebraska. By 1993, Nebraska health officials reported 35 human cases: 11 of these cases were confirmed as having been contracted in Lancaster County. Early signs of the disease include: a red rash which expands in concentric circles outward from the tick bite producing a "bulls-eye" effect. Later, flu-like symptoms occur which include headache, fever, chills, lethargy, and joint and muscle pain. In advanced untreated cases, there may be arthritis-like symptoms in the knees and shoulders and cardiac abnormalities. In most cases, antibiotics have shown to be an effective treatment of this disease, especially in early stages of the disease. There is no vaccine presently available for humans. Lyme disease can also infect dogs, horses and cattle. In dogs, Lyme disease can cause fever, joint swelling, pain, arthritis, and lameness. Infected dogs may also exhibit a loss of appetite, depression and lethargy. This disease is rarely fatal in dogs, but it can be debilitating and antibiotic treatments can be long and expensive. A vaccine against Lyme disease for dogs is available from a veterinarian and is an initial series of two shots, followed by a yearly booster shot.

What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is an infection caused by a kind of bacteria (germ) called a spirochete (say: "spy-ro-keet"). The disease is carried by deer ticks and western black-legged ticks (found mostly on the Pacific Coast). These ticks can spread the disease to animals and humans through tick bites. These ticks are about the size of a sesame seed. Lyme disease is most common in rural and suburban areas in the northeastern and midwestern states. Lyme disease is also found in other parts of the United States, as well as in Europe, Asia and Australia. Return to top
What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?
One sign of Lyme disease is a rash, which may appear 3 to 30 days after a tick bite. This rash, called erythema migrans (say: "ear-a-theem-a my-granz"), usually starts at the site of the tick bite. It may begin as a small red spot and grow larger. The center may fade, creating a "bull's eye" or ring appearance, but this is not always the case. Some people with Lyme disease have many red spots. The rash may burn, hurt or itch, or you may not notice it. Other symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, chills, headaches, stiff neck, fatigue, muscle aches and joint pain. In a few people, early Lyme disease can spread to the heart or the nervous system. If Lyme disease spreads to the heart, the person may feel an irregular or slow heartbeat. Early spread of Lyme disease to the nervous system can cause the face to droop (a condition called Bell's palsy).

I was lucky enough to find some excellent information on tick bite prevention specifically aimed at the UK, kindly provided by Arun District Council and Dr.David Hagen who is a consultant in public health for the area. Hard copies can be requested from Paul Murphy at paul_murphy@arun.gov.uk I have left some of the links below to the more useful papers and sites available. But the most up to date information will be found on Eurolyme, as the momentum has really started to move towards proper diagnosis and treatment for this disease caused by, what has now come to be recognized as, a super-microbe. This pleomorphic (basically it changes form) microbe can exist in at least three different morphologic forms: spirochaetal, spherolplast (or l-form), and the recently discovered cystic form. L-forms and cystic forms do not contain cell walls, and thus beta lactam antibiotics will not affect them. Borrelia is clever enough to hide in the hosts own blood cells and body tissue to evade the immune system, it also has severe immunosuppresive capabilities and is capable of survival in deep cold storage and the most extremely hostile environments. After initial infection borrelia can

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans . If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., rash), and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks; laboratory testing is helpful in the later stages of disease. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics. Steps to

What is Lyme Disease?
L yme disease (LD) is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi , a type of bacterium called a spirochete (pronounced spy-ro-keet ) that is carried by deer ticks. An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the humans and animals it bites. Untreated, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, and can cause a number of symptoms, some of which are severe. LD manifests itself as a multisystem inflammatory disease that affects the skin in its early, localized stage, and spreads to the joints, nervous system and, to a lesser extent, other organ systems in its later, disseminated stages. If diagnosed and treated early with antibiotics, LD is almost always readily cured
