Geographie der Luxemburger Familiennamen
(Geography of Luxembourg Family Names)
STUCK?
A major problem in immigrant genealogy is bridging the Atlantic gap. Who has not experienced the frustrating feeling of knowing the country of origin but not being able to determine the village and town of origin of the ancestors? Around 1850 Luxembourg had 135 local communities (today 118), which all kept their own vital records.
A central record index is not available. Not knowing the place of origin constitutes thus an unsurmountable obstacle for accessing the records for further research. The book:
Geographie der Luxemburger Familiennamen (Geography of Luxembourg Family Names)
published by the Institut Grand-Ducal, Section de linguistique, de folklore et de toponymie, in Luxembourg, will allow you to back out of this research dead end. Based on the 1930 population census, it gives for every Luxembourg family name the number of bearers and the locality where they resided and, of course, their local frequency. It is thus possible to determine areas and gravity centers for name occurences and direct your research to these specific places.
Moreover does it permit to check whether a name is of Luxembourg origin or, in case the name has suffered phonetic changes, to verify the correct spelling.
