Brussels exhibition on Luxembourg’s role in the history of European integration The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2005 will be occupying the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels for the first six months of the year. The public is invited to visit an exhibition on the premises of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union on Luxembourg’s role in the history of European integration. This exhibition has been created in close cooperation with the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe , a public Luxembourg institution which acts as a platform for collecting, selecting, processing, publishing and conducting research into information on the historical and institutional development of united Europe. The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2005 has also received help from the directors of the  Fondation Mus©e d’Art Moderne Grand-duc Jean du Luxembourg in providing a fresh look at the everyday environment of European officials, using a variety of works of art by Luxembourg artists in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels and the Kiem building in Luxembourg.

L U X E M B O U R G 0. INTRODUCTION The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has a population of 415,870 (1997), and is divided into 12 administrative council units covering an area of 2,586 km . Almost a quarter of the total population are foreign nationals. Letzeburgihs , a German-Moselle-Frankish dialect, is the spoken language, which became the country's official language in 1985. French is generally used for administrative purposes, while German is the language of commerce and the press. The standard of living is one of the highest in Europe. 1. ADMINISTRATIVE AND INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES 2.1 Public and semi-public bodies Responsibility for national cultural policy rests primarily with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs , which comes directly under the Prime Minister. The Ministry's various departments deal with cultural heritage, audio-visual sector, literature, theatre and cabaret, music and dance, and visual and graphic arts.
