ADVERTISING INFORMATION Luxembourg - Culture Culture. After centuries of foreign rule, it should come as no surprise that Luxembourg's population is composed of about 30% foreigners - the highest ratio of any EU country. Today's invading hordes, however, cross the borders quietly, caps in hand, nurturing sweet dreams of employment opportunities rather than pillage and plunder. Luxembourg's per capita GDP was the world's highest in 1997, its standard of living consistently rates among the best and its workforce boasts a remarkably low unemployment rate. Not bad for a country with a population about 30 times less than that of Los Angeles. Squashed in between two major historical world powers (and having been conquered at times by both of them), Luxembourg takes a good deal of its identity from its neighbours' contributions. This shows itself both in the generally amicable relationship between the countries and their citizens and in their shared linguistic traits. Multilingualism is universal among Luxembourgers, and both the German and French languages are used in the press, in politics and in daily life. French is most common in government and schools, though Luxembourgish is the language you'll hear most frequently on the street. English is widely understood in tourist areas. Luxembourg's cuisine is similar to that of Belgium's Wallonia region - plenty of pork, fish and game - but also features some heavy German influence in local specialties like liver dumplings with sauerkraut. Its beer (like that of neighbouring Belgium) is not too shabby; neither are the Moselle Valley's fruity white wines.

A Short History of this Small Country
The Luxembourg national motto (52.5k jpg) is: "Mir wölle bleiwen wat mir sin" or "We want to remain what we are." Considering the long history of this little country and the intensely independent character of its natives, one can see that it fits very well.
Luxembourg was first established in 963 when Count Siegfried acquired the fortress of Lucilinburhuc from Saint Maximinius Abbey in Trier. It flourished as a Duchy in the medieval Europe for nearly 500 years and the dynasty founded by Siegfried provided some of the leading figures of the German empire in the 14th century. It fell under Burgundian domination in 1443. Over the next 400 years, Spanish, French and Austrian armies took turns occupying the fortified capital. In 1815, after the breakup of the napoleonean empire, Luxembourg became a Grand-Duchy under Dutch ruling and finally regained its independence in 1839.
It was occupied during most of the duration of both World Wars but the Luxembourg people resisted and fought valiantly to regain their independence.

Luxembourg History and Culture
History Luxembourg's history reads a bit like the storybook background its landscape suggests. Though the area's occupation actually extends back further than the Roman era, present-day Luxembourg stems from the loins of Count Sigefroid of Ardennes, who raised a castle here in 963 AD and sowed the seeds of a dynasty that's spawned rulers throughout Europe. By the end of the Middle Ages, Sigefroid's city had the Burgundians, Spanish, French, Austrians and Prussians all waging bloody battles to conquer and secure it.

Luxembourg , located in western Europe, southeast of Belgium and between France and Germany, is a worthwhile country to visit on a vacation. Packed into 2,586 square kilometers are many impressive medieval castles (notably the ones at Vianden and Clervaux), beautiful scenery, the Moselle wine region , and historical artifacts dating back to the Roman occupation . The most popular destination is the spectacular fortress City of Luxembourg itself.
The view above shows Luxembourg City around 1858, before the dismantling of major portions of the fortress in accordance with the Treaty of London of 1867 and before the building of the railroad viaduct that now sweeps around the town. Very few ruins remain of the ancient castle built around 963 A.D. on the rocky outcrop on the right side of the drawing. Flash:
Luxembourg is the World's Only Grand Duchy
Grand Duke Henri The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was formed in 1815 by agreement of the European powers at the Congress of Vienna. It was originally ruled by the King of The Netherlands, but in 1890 official ties were severed when the King died with no male heir. The Grand Duchy has had its own monarch ever since. The current sovereign is Grand Duke Henri of the House of Nassau-Weilburg. Henri was born in 1955 and assumed power on October 7, 2000 when his father, Grand Duke Jean, abdicated in his favor.

In the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, the Ministry of Culture, higher Education and Research (http://www.ltam.lu/culture/) is implementing the cultural policy, culture being understood as a vast factor shaping all societies, integrating at the same time the arts, literature, customs and habits, fundamental human rights, creativity and acceptance of the other.
More than 33% of those who live in Luxembourg are not "nationals". Therefore, the Ministry of Culture is conscious that culture needs to appeal to the country's many component communities. The main objective in the Ministry's strategy is the creation of an appropriate legislative and structural framework for the development of the arts, including international and public arts and the enhancement of the national cultural infrastructure. To achieve these goals, the Ministry of Culture works in close cooperation with all public and private cultural sectors.
More concretely, the Government has implemented a law on the statute of the independent professional artist and the entertainment intermittent, as well as on the promotion of artistic creation.

Bruch did this, and it was used for all the volumes of the , in a publication period which lasted from 1950 to 1978. Whilst this places a heavy burden on the educational system, it does however give the students a unique opportunity to learn many languages and thus gives access to many cultures.
