elcome to the Lupus Foundation of Illinois. Whether you are a long time or newly diagnosed lupus patient, or the family member or friend of a patient, this website will provide you with information and resources that will help you better understand and manage this disease. Lupus, a serious and chronic autoimmune disease, is hard to diagnose, difficult to manage, incurable, and at times life threatening. Current statistics indicate that lupus affects adult women approximately 10 times more frequently than men. Even though lupus is more prevalent in this country than AIDS, sickle cell anemia, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined , it is the least known of all major diseases. Our goal with this website is to increase lupus awareness, and to improve the quality of life of those affected by lupus through education, community outreach services, and support of research leading to better treatment and an eventual cure. 2005 Membership Drive:

WHAT IS LUPUS?
So few have heard of it, yet worldwide it's seen as more common than leukaemia muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis. 90% of the patients who suffer from Lupus are female of childbearing age. Even young children can be affected by lupus. Lupus is a condition whereby the body's defence mechanism goes into overdrive and starts to attack itself. The symptoms are many and varied, and the illness often seems to mimic other diseases. This gives rise to difficulty in diagnosis and the condition can be overlooked, sometimes for years, unless the General Practioner or consultant is alert to the possibility of lupus. LUPUS IS NOT CONTAGIOUS Lupus can be triggered - at puberty - during the menopause - after childbirth - after viral infection - through sunlight - as a result of trauma - after a prolonged course of medication THE SYMPTOMS These may include - extreme fatigue - joint and muscle pain - eye problems - depression

What is vasculitis?
Vasculitis is an inflammation of the blood vessels. Inflammation is a condition in which tissue is damaged by blood cells entering the tissues. These are mostly white blood cells which circulate and serve as our major defense against infection. Ordinarily, white blood cells destroy bacteria and viruses. However, they can also damage normal tissue if they invade it. Vasculitis can affect very small blood vessels (capillaries), medium-size blood vessels (arterioles or venules), or large blood vessels (arteries and veins). Several things can happen to an inflamed blood vessel. If it is a small vessel, it may bread and produce tiny areas of bleeding in the tissue. These areas will appear as small red or purple dots on the skin. If a larger vessel is inflamed, it may swell and produce a nodule which may be felt if the blood vessel is close to the skin surface. The inside of the vessel tube may become narrowed so that blood flow is reduced, or the inside may become totally closed (usually by a blood clot which forms at the site of inflammation). If blood flow is reduced or stopped, the tissues which receive blood from that vessel begin to die. For example, a person with vasculitis of a medium-sized artery in the hand may develop a cold finger which hurts whenever it is used; occasionally this can progress to gangrene.

What is lupus?
Who has lupus?
Lupus affects up to 1.4 million people in the United States. About 9 out of 10 people who have lupus are women. Lupus is 3 times more common in black women than in white women. It is also more common in women of Hispanic/Latina, Asian, and American Indian descent. Black and Hispanic/Latina women tend to develop symptoms at an earlier age than other women. African Americans have more severe organ problems, especially with their kidneys.
What are the different types of lupus?
There are several forms of lupus: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) SLE is the most common type of lupus. SLE can affect many parts of the body including joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, heart, blood vessels, nervous system, blood, and brain. Although SLE usually develops in people between the ages of 15 and 44 years, it can occur in childhood or later in life. The signs of SLE vary and there are usually periods of both illness and wellness (also called remission or having no symptoms). Some people have just a few signs of the disease while others have more. Its symptoms can include:
  • "butterfly" rash across the nose and cheeks

General Features
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease with many manifestations. SLE is an autoimmune disease in which the body's own immune system is directed against the body's own tissues. The etiology of SLE is not known. It can occur at all ages, but is more common in young women. The production of autoantibodies leads to immune complex formation. The immune complex deposition in many tissues leads to the manifestations of the disease. Immune complexes can be deposited in glomeruli, skin, lungs, synovium, mesothelium, and other places. Many SLE patients develop renal complications.
Laboratory Testing
The presence of autoantibodies can usually be determined by the antinuclear antibody (ANA) test performed on patient serum from blood. The titer, or strength, of the ANA gives a rough indication of the severity of the disease. Not all positive ANA tests indicate autoimmune disease, particularly when the titer is low. After a positive screening ANA test, more specific tests for SLE include detection of autoantibodies to double stranded DNA and to Smith antigen.
