Lung Cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer among both men and women in the United States. There are two main types of lung cancer. Types of lung cancer There are two kinds of lung cancers. The two main kinds are primary and secondary. Primary lung cancer starts in the lung itself. Primary lung cancer is divided into small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, depending on how the cells look under the microscope. Each type of Primary lung cancer grows and spreads in different ways. Secondary lung cancer is cancer that starts somewhere else in the body (for example, the breast or colon) and spreads to the lungs. Small cell cancer was formerly called oat cell cancer, because the cells resemble oats in their shape. About a fourth of all lung cancers are small cell cancers. This type is a very aggressive cancer and spreads to other organs within a short time. It is generally found in people who are heavy smokers. Non-small cell cancers account for about 75% of lung cancers. This type of lung cancer grows and spreads more slowly than small cell cancer. There are three main types of nonsmall cell lung cancer. The types are named for the type of cell in which the cancer develops. The types are: squamous cell carcinoma (also called epidermoid carcinoma), adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.

Lung Cancer
Medical Author: Melissa Conrad Stöppler, MD
Medical Editor: Jay W. Marks, MD What is cancer of the lung?
Cancer of the lung, like all cancers, results from an abnormality in the body’s basic unit of life, the cell. Normally, the body maintains a system of checks and balances on cell growth so that cells divide to produce new cells only when needed. Disruption of this system of checks and balances on cell growth results in an uncontrolled division and proliferation of cells that eventually forms a mass known as a tumor. Tumors can be benign or malignant; when we speak of “cancer” we refer to those tumors that are considered malignant. Benign tumors can usually be removed and do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors, on the other hand, grow aggressively and invade other tissues of the body, allowing entry of tumor cells into the bloodstream or lymphatic system which spread the tumor to other sites in the body. This process of spread is termed metastasis; the areas of tumor growth at these distant sites are called metastases. Since lung cancer tends to spread, or metastasize, very early in its course, it is a very life-threatening cancer and one of the most difficult cancers to treat. While lung cancer can spread to any organ in the body, certain organs – particularly the adrenal glands, liver, brain, and bone - are the most common sites for lung cancer metastasis.

Mesothelioma Information, Support, and Resources
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the linings of the lungs, chest, abdomen, and the organs contained in those areas, rather than a cancer that forms in the lungs. Mesothelioma is most frequently caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals. Asbestos releases strong, microscopic fibers that may injure the protective linings surrounding the body's organs. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization ( ADAO ) has had many requests to provide information about mesothelioma, resources for treatment options, and support to those dealing with mesothelioma. We hope this website will help to meet that need. April 25, 2005

What is lung cancer?
Lung cancer is one of the largest killers in the Western world. The risk of developing lung cancer is increased 10-40 times if you smoke. The cells of all living organisms normally divide and grow in a controlled manner. Cancer results when this control process is lost. A lump or tumour, known as the primary tumour can grow locally or spread to produce secondary tumours somewhere else in the body. This spreading process is called metastasis.
About 40,000 people in the UK die every year from lung cancer. It is the most common form of cancer in the UK and the most common cause of death from cancer in both men and women although it affects more men than women.

Lung cancer is sometimes called "bronchogenic cancer," or it may be described by its particular histologic type, that is the type of tissue that is diseased. Under normal circumstances, lung cells reproduce in an orderly fashion to maintain tissue health and to repair injuries. However, when growth control is lost and cells divide too much and too fast, a cellular mass - or tumor - is formed. If the tumor is confined to a few cell layers (for example, surface cells) and it does not invade surrounding tissues or organs, it is considered benign. By contrast, if the tumor spreads to surrounding tissues or organs, it is considered malignant, or cancerous. If cancerous cells break away from the original tumor, travel, and grow within other body parts- such as the brain, bone, liver, adrenal glands, the opposite lung, or lymph nodes of the chest or collarbone (clavicle) regions - the process is known as

Lung cancer is often fatal
The female sex hormone oestrogen may be to blame for putting women at greater risk of lung cancer. US researcher Dr Jill Siegfried, from the University of Pittsburgh, has carried out an analysis of research into why women should be a greater risk of the killer disease. In both the UK and US, lung cancer now kills more women than breast cancer.
The concentration of sex hormones may influence the growth rate of lung tumours
Dr Jill Siegfried This is partly due to the fact there has been an increase in the number of women smoking since the 1960s. However, Dr Siegfried found that among people who smoke the same amount, women may be up to twice as likely to develop lung cancer as men. In addition, non-smokers who develop lung cancer are two and a half times more likely to be female than male. Adverse effect Dr Siegfried believes that the higher susceptibility of women to the adverse effects of tobacco could be associated with their higher levels of oestrogen.

Oncology Team ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Link to oncologychannel Treatment
As is true of many cancers, the treatment of lung cancer depends upon a variety of factors. The most important factors are the histopathologic (diseased tissue) type of tumor that is present and its stage . Once a lung cancer has been staged, the physician and patient can discuss treatment options. An individual then has a better idea of the value of different forms of therapy. Other factors that are taken into account include the person's general health, medical problems that may affect treatment (such as chemotherapy), and tumor characteristics. The characteristics of the lung tumor help to separate individuals into two groups: (1) those who are at low risk of cancer recurrence and (2) those who are at high risk of cancer recurrence. Specific prognostic - disease-forecasting - factors place patients in either of these groups. In particular, the histopathologic groupings of small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) versus non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) may be used to better predict a patient's prognosis and response to therapy.

Oxford University said the epidemiologist died at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, after a short illness. He was 92. One of the world's most highly regarded professors, Sir Richard was responsible for the good health of millions. His seminal 1950 study, which he wrote with Austin Bradford Hill, said smoking was "a major cause" of lung cancer. Dr John Hood, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, said the professor's work had saved millions of lives. He was revolutionary in his approach, an absolute gentleman and exceedingly brilliant academically

He said: "Sir Richard's enormous contribution to medicine globally, and within Oxford, cannot be understated. "His pioneering epidemiological work on the link between smoking and cancer, cardiovascular disease and many other disorders, has led to the dramatic reduction in smoking rates in Britain over the past 50 years, especially among men."
