DISCUSSION The Olympic luge event was introduced in 1964 at Innsbruck-Igis, Austria. The word luge is French for "racing sled." Lugers careen down the course feet first while lying on their backs. The luge sled was originally controlled by a hand-held strap which guided the front of the runner. Now luges are steered by the lugers exerting pressure on the sides of the car with their feet and shoulders. Sliders have limited visibility because of their body position combined with speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. Hairpin turns in the course and rules requiring one of the four runs to be run at night make this event one of the most dangerous in the Olympics. It is so dangerous, in fact, that in 1964 a Polish-born British slider named Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski was killed in a luge accident, and later, two other German lugers were severely injured. Several physical forces are demonstrated by a luge event. One is

Snow hampered Coomber's bid for gold
Alex Coomber has won Great Britain's first medal of the Salt Lake City Games after claiming bronze in the women's skeleton final. RAF officer Coomber, who was the hot favourite for gold, finished behind American duo Tristan Gale and Lea Ann Parsley. Coomber said: "I'm ecstatic, that was absolutely brilliant... I can't be disappointed with an Olympic medal.
This is indescribable - it's the most nerve-wracking experience of my life
Alex Coomber after finishing third "The worst moment is when you come over the line and you don't immediately know what your position is. "I had a bump on the 11th curve, I've been having trouble with that all week. "The snow didn't help, but I was not too worried, I knew I could still go fast," the 28-year-old added. Heavy snow, which can cause problems with momentum, greeted Coomber's arrival at the Utah Olympic Park track.

t Source: Research Gravity Well it's been a long time since the last update...there is a lot of new things happening in the world of luge and standup skateboarding. This posting is to warn all streetlugers in the Calgary area that use Hwy 66, west of Bragg Creek. I received a call earlier this week from a unfortunate soul who became a victim of the new tax grab. The park wardens issued him a $450.00 stunting ticket, and confiscated his luge. Be very careful and be aware of the new fines. I'll try and follow-up with the results of his court appearance.
Source: Research Gravity The Red Bull Streets of San Francisco was for the 4th year an absolute amazing event. 32 street lugers from around the Globe traveled to DeHaro St. to take on the "Cheese Grater" and launch off the craziest ramp I've ever seen. Thanks again Red Bull, Tom Mason, JA Productions and all the great residence of DeHaro Street for an awesome day. Click here for event pictures
Source: Research Gravity The latest movie to feature Street luge hit the theaters last Friday. A remake of the 1975 movie "Roller Ball". The flick features Biker Sherlock and Todd Lehr ripping up the streets of San Francisco.
