LUGE
The word luge comes from the French word for sled. Although luge is a relatively new Olympic sport, sled racing is a very old winter pastime. References to sled racing in Norway date to 1480. The first international luge race took place in 1883 with twenty-one competitors representing seven nations including the United States. The first Olympic Luge team consisted mainly of American soldiers who were stationed in Europe. With no formal luge program the American, athletes attracted to the sport were relegated to training on the 1932 Olympic Bobsled Run in Lake Placid New York. In preparation for the Olympic Winter Games of 1979, the first refrigerated luge run was constructed at Lake Placid. The sport of luge is an exciting timed sport! Competitors lie on a small sled feet first. They hurtle up to 90 mph through 17 curves on 4,318 ft of track in less than 1 minute. There are no brakes. The Competition
Luge has been an Olympic event since the 1964 Innsbruck Games. The sport consists of three disciplines: men's singles, women's singles and doubles.

The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

    WINTER OLYMPICS LUGE
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1964 LUGE The first World Championships occurred on an artificial track in Oslo in 1955. Two years later, the International Luge Federation (FIL) was founded in Davos and remains the governing body of luge today. Luge made its Olympic debut in Innsbruck at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games with three events - men's, women's and doubles. These three events have been a part of every Olympics since 1964. Through the 1992 Olympics, the doubles event was known as men's doubles. After Albertville, the International Luge Federation (FIL) changed doubles to a mixed-gender competition. Since the ruling has been made, however, no mixed-gender teams have appeared in the Olympics. Of the 99 medals that have been awarded since 1964, 95 of them have gone to athletes from Germany, Austria, Italy or the former Soviet Union. The only four exceptions occurred when the United States won the silver and bronze medal in the doubles competition at the 1998 Nagano Games and again at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. This spectacular sport was dominated by East Germans from 1964 - 1988, during which time they won an incredible 15 of 21 gold medals on offer. A German by the name of Georg Hackl, who used to race for the former West Germany, is the undisputed king of luge and he has won the gold medal at the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Olympic Games on top of his 2 silver medals in the 1988 and 2002 Games. He is the only Olympic athlete in history to medal in five Olympic Games.

    Origins

Although credit for the development of competitive sliding is traditionally given to the alpine countries of Europe, the sport wa a popular pastime with the Mohawks of Kahnawake in Quebec. The word 'toboggan' is a North American Indian name given to the sleds used to transport supplies between camps in the winter.
The first official luge competition occurred in 1883. Competitors from Australia, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland started on a 4-km road betwwen Davos and Klosters. Australian student Georg Roberston and Swiss mailman Peter Minsch tied for the win with a time of 9 minutes and 15 seconds, for an average speed of 26km/h.
    The Sport
Three events are on the Olympic program: women's single luge, men's single luge, and double luge, which has been a mixed event since the 1992 Games in Albertville, although no mixed team has ever competed at the Games.
The individuals or teams race down the course against the clock. They make four runs in singles and two runs in doubles, and the lowest total time (measured to a thousand of a second) determines the winner. Lighter weight competitors may use a regulated amount of ballast to raise the total weight. The luge course is between 1000m and 1500m long with an average gradient between 8 and 15 per cent. The sled must have two single runners and weigh no more than 23kg without the rider in singles, and 27kg without the rider in doubles. With the construction of refrigerated tracks and aerodynamic sleds, lugers now hurtle down the track at speeds of up to 140km/h.
