42. PROBLEMS WITH EGG PRODUCTION
Discusses lifethreatening problems in cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, and canaries that include egg binding, prolapse, egg peritonitis, and obturator paralysis.
http://shell.pubnix.net/~mhagen/docu/prob_egg.html
PROBLEMS WITH EGG PRODUCTION
Excessive egg production is a common problem in cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, and canaries. Remember that in the wild, such birds simply find a mate and raise a family. And these wild versions of our pets rarely produce more than one or two sets of eggs per year. But if eggs are laid by a pet bird when no mate or nest is nearby, their failure to hatch may stimulate the bird to lay more. The egg shells require a large amount of calcium, and after 5 or 6 have been laid the bird will sometimes be unable to eat enough calcium to continue. Vitamin D deficiencies will add to the problem as D is required to make the calcium available. This very unnatural situation gives rise to many problems. Egg-binding, prolapsed oviduct, egg peritonitis, and obturator paralysis are all life-threatening consequences. Female birds that lay many eggs may need to be treated with prescription drugs (oral and injectable). All laying hens need several sources of calcium (see below) and proper level of vitamin D Good sources of calcium include broccoli, alfalfa sprouts, fresh alfalfa, cheese, yoghurt, and commercial bird pellets. CALCIUM CARBONATE should also be offered and sources include cuttlebone, mineral blocks, oyster shell, bone meal, and many combination vitamin/mineral supplements (read the label carefully). CALCIUM GLUCONATE is an excellent calcium source and is found in tablet form or in some newer combination supplements (ie

Life Lessons from Lovebirds Recently, my husband and I were walking
through a local mall near closing time,
when we decided to stop and take a look
around the pet store. As we made our way past
the cages of poodles and Pomeranians, tabby cats
and turtles, our eyes caught sight of something
that immediately charmed us: a pair of peach-
faced lovebirds. Unlike many other lovebirds
we encountered there, this particular pair looked
truly "in love." In fact, they snuggled and cuddled next to each other the whole time we watched them. Throughout the next few days, my mind returned to the image of those two delightful birds. I admired their devotion, and felt their very presence inspiring. Apparently, these birds had the same effect

History and Origin
Lovebirds are native to the Africa, except for the Madagascar Lovebird who is, obviously, native to Madagascar. People are most familiar with the Peach-Faced Lovebird, which comes from West Africa. These little birds were made famous in the film "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock. They were the birds purchased by the lead female character played by Tippi Hedren and taken to Bodega Bay, where they all got a taste of "bad bird" behavior.

~DEDICATED TO BIRDS~ In the spring of 1990 I was given a 2 year old cockatiel. It was the beginning of an adventure into the joys, and sometimes the heartaches, of owning and loving pet birds.

My little Soleil, a lutino peach-face lovebird, is such a sweetheart, whom I can easily take with me everywhere I go (even smuggled him into a restaurant once ;-) He is very cuddly (with me) and very animated. Amber Headlights are ON!
Listening to the new Twilight Singers Greg Dulli's Amber Headlights. I have to say that it's pretty sweet and upbeat. VERY reminiscent of early Afghan Whigs. But, it also feels incomplete. That's not always a bad thing. There's an urgency about it, and Dulli rocks out on this one.
Check it out. Get the wheel, let's go for a ride....

Moraine Valley Show...
Yesterday, we played Moraine Valley Community college, and although the morning drizzle proved a bit daunting, the rest of the afternoon went well. We were able to get over 200 CD's into the student's hands! They had a cook out, and other activities and it brought us some exposure while allowing the different student organizations a platform as well. Big thanks to Cindy and everyone else at Moraine for making it possible.
Also, thanks to Tom F. for helping out and taking pictures. They will be posted soon.
