Our site is narrated by our flock, (after all it is their site!) and is started off by Ralph and Zita telling the story of how Tiny Rascals Aviary evolved. Of course then our linnies will tell you how they came into the picture. As Jo is continually reading and learning, if you keep tabs on our Journal you will find all kinds of tidbits of information. Weather it be an addition to our diet, new toys, hand feeding, etc.etc. you will always find the babies chattering about something. It's also in the Journal that you will find loads of baby pictures. They also need hours of sleep each night. They do need a tad of light at night to be able to drink and eat.

Cockatiels and Lovebirds
A small introduction
Warning: This is just an intro page. I am not a trained aviculturalist. This is not and should not be your final guide to bird-keeping!! IF YOUR BIRD IS SICK OR INJURED PLEASE TAKE IT TO AN AVIAN VET!!! I'm limiting this to cockatiels and lovebirds because I have only owned two cockatiels and one lovebird (and a bunch of untame budgies). Larger parrots share much in common with these smaller members of the family, but their needs and their abilities differ greatly. If you are planning on getting a pet bird, or are a new owner, I highly recommend the magazine BIRD TALK . In addition, you should buy/borrow books on bird keeping at a library, bookstore, or good petstore. And definitely locate a good, qualified avian vet right away, if you haven't already! He or she will be much more qualified to answer your health/medical questions than me. Other related pages at this site:

Welcome to Cage Birds!
European Goldfinches courtesy of Daniel Maldonado What is a bird?
Birds are defined as homeothermic (warm-blooded) vertebrates with two pairs of limbs based on a pentadactyl pattern. The front limbs are modified to form wings. The body is covered by feathers except over the legs and feet, where reptilian type scales exist, and over the face which is often ornamental skin. What is a bird? Birds are my companions and my friends. I wake to their songs and their chattering each morning and many days they give me the strength and the reason to get out of bed and carry on with my day. They have taught me about love and bonding and have taught me how to play again. Birds, whether my own companion birds, or the hummingbirds I see outside my window, allow me to communicate with other peopleand make new friends in a way I could not do before.

    LOVEBIRDS
by Anne Johnson Lovebirds are the second smallest species of parrot. Their weight range is 42 to 60 grams. Females tend to be slighter larger than the males. All nine species are in the genius AGAPORNIS. Native to Africa and surrounding islands, many species were imported into the U.S. in large numbers in the late 20 th century. The most common is the Peach-Face. Peach Face Lovebirds come in a wide variety of color mutations including normal green, Dutch-Blue, Lutino, Pied, Creamino, Cinnamon, and in combinations of the above. Due to the relative ease of breeding in captivity peach-face are quite common in aviaries and in pet stores. Color does not reflect on individual pet quality, so choose your bird for its personality. Birds who were hand-fed make excellent pets. Parent raised lovebirds can be difficult to tame. When considering the purchase of a lovebird you should take into account the fact that they are full of energy, and can be quite noisy with their endless chattering and shrill scream, although not anywhere nearly as loud as the larger parrots. Lovebirds are extremely playful and a joy to watch. With their boundless energy they will swing from toy to toy, hop from perch to perch, never seeming to tire. There is nothing more comical than watching a lovebird do the "birdie splits", or playing in their water dish, or rolling around on the bottom of the cage with a ball. They enjoy perching on their owners shoulder and playing in their owner's hair. Hiding in your hair, under your collar, in your pocket, in a empty paper towel roll, etc., is a favorite game.

15. How To Fix Splay Legs In Baby Lovebirds Using A Makeup Sponge
Contains photographs of how to tend to this condition in baby birds of this species.
http://www.parrotparrot.com/splay/
Fixing Splay Legs in Baby Lovebirds
with the Use of a Makeup Sponge Wedge Sometimes even with the greatest of care, a baby can develop splay legs. Preventive measures are best (such as making sure that there is enough nesting material in the box and that the diet is nutritionally complete for the parents), but every once and a while, the mother hen will sit too tight on a baby and cause one or both legs to appear to stick out from the body. Here is a tutorial on a very effective way to remedy this problem in baby lovebirds. Please take your baby bird to an avian veterinarian if you are unable to do this procedure. If caught at an early age, splay legs are very correctable. Don't let it go for more than a day or two if you are having difficulty creating a hobble yourself. Use a makeup sponge in the wedge shape. These are the proper thickness. You will have to trim down the wider end so that it is even. Use scissors to trim down the wider end so it is flat across the top. It doesn't have to look pretty, just be even. Make two slits in the sponge using the end of a scissors point. Turn the scissors to make a hole somewhat round. The two slits should be just wide enough that the legs will go straight down from the body. Don't put them too close together as they will tear into each other.

Lovebird FAQ
Lovebird FAQ
by Nicole Jones
Lovebirds are among the most fascinating birds. The many species and mutations mean that there are literally thousands of different lovebirds in the world. They are a joy to watch, fun to play with, and relatively easy to breed. Contrary to popular belief, lovebirds need not be kept in pairs. A single lovebird makes a wonderful pet, and a faithful friend. This FAQ attempts to cover the basics of Lovebird ownership and breeding. It is by no means a complete guide to everything you need to know about Lovebirds. There are many generalizations in this FAQ, and as with any bird FAQ, there are exceptions to eve rything. If your Lovebird doesn't fit the generalizations, it simply means that they are their own bird, and their personality is unique. If you wish more information, there are some recommendations for books within this FAQ.
    Are Lovebirds For You?
Lovebirds are small, active, happy birds. They can also be loud and nippy. A single Lovebird can be a great pet, while a pair of Lovebirds will often bond to each other and not care to spend time with you. A Lovebird will not sing, and few Lovebirds will learn human speech. But they are a lot of personality packed into a tiny and relatively inexpensive bird. If you are looking for a small buddy, who will be thrilled to play with you and snuggle with you, a Lovebird may be exactly right for you. But be p repared for some shrill chirps, a few nips on the finger, and very inquisitive shadow.
