March 21, 2003: UMCOR's response to Cyclone Japhet in Mozambique continues. In Inhambane province alone, 23,000 people have been made homeless. UMCOR is collaborating with The United Methodist Church of Germany (EmK) in responding to the critical food shortages caused by the most recent flooding. UMCOR has also given funds to help reconstruct the Massinga Center for Elderly Women, where several residences were destroyed by the cyclone. This center is for older women who have been abandoned by their families because they were accused of witchcraft. Mozambique continues to suffer from the effects of the devastating floods of 2000 as well as the famine that is afflicting southern Africa. To help, please give to the Mozambique Emergency Advance #156500-0 UMCOR, through its ecumenical partners, is helping to provide general health care, food and shelter in Iraq. Efforts for serving the health care and food needs of malnourished children as well as their mothers and other women continue. UMCOR is also contributing one of three staff persons who will provide communications about Iraq through Action by Churches Together (ACT). You can help bind up the wounds of our brothers and sisters in Iraq, old wounds that are now deepened by war. Please give to the Iraq Emergency Advance #623225-4 . The New Physician
Health Care Delivery: Rural vs. Urban Communities
More than 20 million people in the United States live in areas that have a shortage of physicians to meet their basic health care needs. This lack of access to quality health care for many people, particularly those living in rural and urban underserved communities, is a serious health care problem. Health care delivery in rural and urban communities poses many unique challenges and students must be aware of these challenges when studying and practicing medicine. A common problem faced by both rural and urban communities is the lack of physicians practicing in these communities. In response to the physician shortage, medical schools have adopted a selective medical school admission policy to enhance a primary care choice in underserved communities. Although some students initially recruited do eventually practice in underserved communities, many do not. While medical schools recruit physicians in-training for underserved areas, they do not have a curriculum that supports this mission. In addition, medical students are discouraged in both subtle and overt ways from entering the primary care specialties that serve underserved areas.
