LOUISIANA SCHOOL FOR MATH, SCIENCE, AND THE ARTS HISTORY AND FUNCTION The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts was created by Act No 932 of the 1981 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. As amended, the Part which contains the statutes relative to the Louisiana School comprises R.S. 17:1961 through 1969, inclusive. The stated legislative intent is to “establish an independent, residential school for certain high school students with the expressed purpose of providing a more challenging educational experience for the gifted and talented children of this state and of developing such children to their full potential.” The school serves approximately 400 high school juniors and seniors who are recruited and selected from throughout the State of Louisiana . Serious consideration is given toward identifying qualified students from every public school system in the state, and students are selected on the basis of their ability to successfully complete the school's academic program. Additionally, the Louisiana Virtual School Program serves more than 2,000 high school students throughout the state with web-based instruction in subjects not otherwise available to such students. The law which created the school also created a Board of Directors which operates independently of all existing boards in governing the operation of the school. The law also specifies the powers, duties, and functions of the board.

Blues harmonica player, R. L. House. Photo by Worth Long. What Is the Pine Hills Culture Program? The Pine Hills Culture Program, formed in 1996, is part of the University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage. Its purpose is to document, preserve, and present traditions and folk culture of the U.S. South's pine hills (or piney woods) region; to build and maintain a network of academics, public programmers, lay scholars, community leaders, and folk artists; and to serve as a regional archive, a place for exhibits, and an information clearinghouse. An important part of its mission is helping communities to identify their own traditions and integrate folklife into local projects, museums, schools, festivals, and other public presentations. The program is headed by a public sector folklorist, Dr. Carolyn Ware. Our main office is in the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage on the USM campus, but we also lease offices, including programming and exhibit space, at the Walthall Center in Hattiesburg's downtown historic district.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CR TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 1997 (202) 616-2765 TDD (202) 514-1888 JUSTICE DEPARTMENT REACHES AGREEMENT WITH LOUISIANA SCHOOL BOARD TO ELIMINATE SEX DISCRIMINATION WASHINGTON, D.C. A Louisiana school board today reached an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department to ensure that women are given the same opportunities as men when applying for janitorial positions at schools. The agreement, filed today with a complaint in U.S. District Court in Baton Rouge, resolves allegations that the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by engaging in a pattern of discrimination because it failed to hire and promote women on an equal basis as men. "We will work to eliminate artificial barriers which deny qualified individuals a chance to compete for a job," said Isabelle Katz Pinzler, Acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. Before today's agreement, the job Janitor I, which offered the lowest salary and benefits of all janitorial positions in the Baton Rouge Parish School District, was only filled by women. However, the majority of higher paying positions (known as Janitor II and III) were filled mostly by men. The higher positions required workers to do some additional outdoor yard work, such as mowing the lawn. The agreement, which will be in effect for four years, requires the school board to provide job opportunities and seniority status for qualified female workers. The school board will also establish a $95,000 fund to provide back pay to claimants. The agreement still must be approved by the court. 97-133
