LSUS launches searchable online evacuee database

The LSUS Office of University Development and Department of Computing Services has launched a searchable online database of Hurricane Katrina evacuees housed at the Red Cross Emergency Shelters at LSUS and Hirsch Coliseum. LSUS gets displaced New Orleans students into classes
As of midday Thursday, LSUS had placed in local classes more than 80 students from colleges and universities in the New Orleans area shut down by Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane emergency relief needs outlined
As evacuees from South Louisiana continue to come to the Shreveport area seeking shelter, the American Red Cross and LSUS are asking for assistance from the community. In addition to its primary Emergency Shelter in the LSUS Health and Physical Education Building, the Red Cross has now opened another shelter at Hirsch Coliseum at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds. The Northwest Louisiana Veterinary Association and the Humane Society have established pet centers adjacent to both the LSUS and Hirsch shelters.

School Standards, Accountability, and Assistance
Library Media Programs in Louisiana Schools
Education reform efforts have touched many aspects of school operations. School libraries will play a critical role in helping students live up to the more stringent academic requirements identified through the No Child Left Behind Act of 2000. The guidelines will help districts develop a supportive learning environment in which students can excel.
The philosophy behind the Library Media Program guidelines is conveyed best through beliefs that:
* The hub of a learning-centered school is an effective school library media program;
* A quality library media program improves student achievement; and
* The best measure of the effectiveness of a library media program is the extent of its impact on student learning.
Research Findings Related To School Libraries
The most recent wide-scale research studies involve several statewide studies on the impact of library media programs on student achievement in Colorado (1998), Pennsylvania (1999), Alaska (1999), Texas (2001), and Oregon (2001), among others. These studies, directed by Learning Resource Services in Colorado, confirm previous research results that demonstrated a strong correlation between an effective library media program and high student achievement. The most important findings of these studies demonstrate that academic achievement is higher in schools where:

Adolescent School Health Initiative - School-Based Health Centers
PURPOSE
A SBHC provides convenient access to comprehensive, primary and preventive physical and mental health services for public school students at the school site. Why on a school campus? Students spend a significant portion of their day on school grounds. SBHCs are accessible, convenient, encourage family and community involvement, reduce student absenteeism, reduce parental leave from work for doctor visits, and work with school personnel to meet the needs of the students and their families. SBHC standards SBHCs in Louisiana follow the Principles, Standards and Guidelines for SBHCs in Louisiana . Parental consent must be obtained prior to seeing a student as a patient. ADOLESCENT SCHOOL HEALTH INITIATIVE ACT (R.S. 40:31.3) This law authorizes the Office of Public Health to facilitate and encourage the development of comprehensive health centers in Louisiana public schools. It specifically prohibits counseling or advocating for abortion and the distribution of contraception.

The IMC administers Federal Quota Funds through the Act to Promote the Education of the Blind for materials available through the American Printing House for the Blind. Funding LIMC receives two sources of funding: Federal Quota funds, given for legally blind students on Louisiana’s Registry of Students with Visual Impairments, and state funding as included in the budget of the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired.
