The University of Louisiana at Monroe welcomed Leadership Ouachita to campus to observe new classes and equipment made possible by ARTS (Asynchronously Routing Technology Solutions) to the Delta in the Computer Learning Center on the third floor of the Colonel William T. Hemphill Airway and Computer Science Building. The business professionals of Leadership Ouachita were able to observe a video conferencing class in session. The group got a look at a music class taught by ULM Assistant Professor of Music, Andy Goodman. The computer software Goodman uses allows elementary students in rural parishes to compose, sing, and play keyboards all interactively with the teacher. The Computer Learning Center at ULM where Goodman teaches boasts two TV monitors (where you can see the children being taught), an electronic keyboard, a smart screen (which is activated by touch), and many computers. The class is currently taught from ULM to first and second graders on Monday and third and fourth graders on Tuesday. Participating schools are in East Carroll Parish: Briarfield Academy; Madison Parish: Tallulah Elementary, Wright Elementary, Tallulah Academy; and Tensas Parish: Tensas Elementary. The class is part of a research project for Goodman.

The Development of School Libraries in South Carolina
The following speech was delivered by Margaret Ehrhardt on March 31, 1988 as the Third Annual Deans' Lecture of the University of South Carolina College of Library and Information Science. Ms. Ehrhardt was Supervisor of School Library Services for the South Carolina State Department of Education from 1970 until the early 1980s.
THE CRUCIAL YEARS: SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTERS The years 1945-1985 were crucial years for school library programs, not only in South Carolina, but for the nation as well. The ALA Handbook for 1944 showed that only 15 states had school library supervisors. It was interesting to note that seven of these were Southern states, including North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. Tonight I should like to explore with you some of the significant events that have helped to shape the development of school library media programs in our state. The first significant factor was the employment by the State Department of Education of the first Supervisor of Library Services. It is seldom that one can pinpoint the beginning of a library media program, but this is not true of school library media services in South Carolina. The date was March 29, 1946, and the time was 11:00. It was then that an announcement was made to the School Library Section of the South Carolina Education Association which was in session at University High School here in Columbia that the State Department of Education had received a grant from the General Education Board (of the Rockefeller Foundation) to employ a Library Supervisor. This was the first attempt to bring structure into what had been haphazard library development in the schools.

n D e p t h Former Sen. John Breaux to join LSU faculty
“We are honored and delighted that Sen. Breaux will join our faculty. He comes at a time when the university is clearly on the move toward achieving greater national prominence and his appointment builds on our expertise in media and politics,” said LSU Chancellor Sean O’Keefe. “Having worked with Sen. Breaux on a range of issues spanning two decades, I am most excited that LSU students will be the beneficiary of his wisdom, expertise and great skill engaging in public policy dialogue.”
As a Distinguished Professor, Breaux will lecture in Mass Communication classes and elsewhere on campus. He will work closely with doctoral students in the Manship School’s media and public affairs program—the only one of its kind in the country.
