Louisiana is Latest State Library to Launch WebFeat System
State Library of Louisiana provides improved access to databases for 338 libraries statewide with customized WebFeat federated search solution
Old Brookville, NY, March 2 http://www.state.lib.la.us ) or local public library websites. "Patrons can now enter a single word or term and search all, some or any of the Louisiana Library Connection databases at once,” noted State Librarian Thomas F. Jaques. “Before, they could search only one database at a time— after scanning the list of 19 databases to determine where to start. WebFeat offers an easy, efficient way for both beginners and experienced researchers to locate the information they need " "WebFeat addresses a trend observed by librarians in Louisiana and across the country,” Jaques explained. “Library users want premium library resources, but they now expect the same quick, comprehensive access to online resources provided by Google and other Internet search engines. In implementing WebFeat, the State Library is providing easier access to the valuable resources in the Louisiana Library Connection databases. That’s particularly important because many Internet websites include information of questionable authenticity. These 19 databases contain only up-to-date, verified information from trusted sources."

LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network Selects WebFeat to Provide Federated Search Solution
Old Brookville, NY, June 24 LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network has selected WebFeat, the original federated search engine, to provide its academic libraries with a federated search solution. With more than 39 member libraries, LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network combines the resources of Louisiana's public and private academic libraries, along with a centralized support staff, to produce a dynamic library consortium. WebFeat will enable each member library implementing a WebFeat system to search any or all of their vast electronic resources with a single, intuitive interface. "LOUIS constantly seeks to provide better services for our consortium members,” commented Ralph Boe, Director of LOUIS. “WebFeat was yet another venue for our institutions to offer quicker and easier searching of numerous resources to their users. We were happy with the flexibility of the WebFeat staff to meet the unique needs of our consortial environment, and provide customization and authentication for our sites." "We are really looking forward to introducing our patrons to the new federated search functionality provided by WebFeat. Our patrons will really appreciate the opportunity to search multiple databases simultaneously, and to discover resources in databases they might not ordinarily use,” said Carla Clark, Head of Access Services and Systems - Noel Memorial Library, Louisiana State University in Shreveport. “This seamless searching capability will surely be a boon to our users who simply want to find what they need as quickly and effortlessly as possible. I am thrilled that the LOUIS consortium is adopting this cutting-edge technology, as it will help us to be relevant and competitive in our ‘get-it-now’ age."

Abstract
Describes the development and implementation of two statewide library networks in Louisiana: the Louisiana Online University Information System (LOUIS), a network of academic libraries, and the Louisiana Library Network (LLN), a network that includes public and school libraries. The projects that resulted in the creation of LOUIS and LLN are discussed in terms of the cooperative efforts of state agencies, academic institutions and libraries throughout the state. The services and resources provided to library patrons as a result of these projects are described, and the benefits of this type of cooperative project are discussed.
INTRODUCTION
At the beginning of the decade, few academic libraries in Louisiana were automated and the likelihood of automation seemed remote, given the financial resources available. Within school and public libraries, information technologies of any type were often absent. Today, a mere seven years later, a statewide multitype library network provides patrons in academic, public and school libraries with access to the online catalogs of 18 academic libraries; access to databases that provide the full-text of thousands of journals and newspapers, as well as other information resources; and access to the full array of materials available through the Internet.

The GODORT Awards Committee honors Smittie for her leadership role in providing improved access to government information. In receiving the Childs Award, Smittie joins a small illustrious group, which includes fellow Louisianan Margaret T. Lane. Smittie first worked in the documents department at LSU, then oversaw the successful transfer of the documents department to the reference department. Over the years Smittie has participated in an impressive array of workshops, symposia and conferences about online processing, documents in the online catalog, managing a documents collection and similar topics. In addition to teaching a course in the use of libraries, Smittie co-authored a text originally titled Books, Libraries and Research, which has gone through several title changes and revisions. It remains a required text in many quarters and is used by the U.S. Army for training purposes. Smittie has been an active member of the American Library Association and the Louisiana Library Association for over twenty years. GODORT secretaries tend to be unsung heroines and Smittie is no exception. She served in that post in 1995/96. She has also ably served as chair of the Louisiana GODORT. In 1990 Smittie (along with three others) was honored with the CIS/ALA/GODORT Documents to the People Award for work on a Marcive project to edit and upgrade the cataloging records of the Government Printing Office. These librarians led their staffs in the total revision of over a quarter a million of MARC records. The Louisiana Library Association has honored Smittie with their 2001 Essae M. Culver Award, their highest award. The Association of College and Research Libraries, the Louisiana Federal Depository Library Council, the Patent Depository Association and the Southeastern Library Association have all benefited from Smittie's energetic presence and wise counsel.

University of Texas Press

Abstract
The twentieth-century civil rights movement had a profound impact on the Louisiana Library Association (LLA). In the 1940s and 1950s, the association made halting attempts to end professional segregation and grant equal rights to African American librarians, but these ultimately failed. Pressure from the American Library Association in the 1960s could not achieve integration either, and the two organizations severed their ties from 1962 to 1965. Ultimately, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 provided the greatest motivation to integrate by invalidating the cultural and legal institutions of Jim Crow. Search Journals About MUSE Contact Us
