Relocation in Louisiana
There's only one place on earth that can claim to be the birthplace of Jazz, speak English as well as French and host the "Crawfish Capital of the World." Louisiana, to use a local recipe, is the bell pepper in America's gumbo. Louisiana evokes colorful images: wrought iron gates and bright pink stucco in New Orleans' Garden District, raucous Mardi Gras revelry up and down the Mississippi. But the reality of Louisiana is even more kaleidoscopic. Inside the air-conditioned New Orleans Superdome, you might easily think you're in Boston or Toronto. But eating crawfish at a roadside stand while watching the sun set over the bayou, you probably couldn't imagine being, or wanting to be, anywhere else but Louisiana.      As flat as any state on the Great Plains, Louisiana's geography follows the Mississippi as it flows in from the North and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana's residents aren't so simple. The state's hallmark Zydeco music and much of its French ambiance is the product of Cajuns - French Canadians who fled to Louisiana in the 1700s. But behind the washboard rhythms lies a deep, sultry mix of Creole, African, Spanish and Anglo influences that make Louisiana a demographer's delight.

The bicentennial of the signing of the Louisiana Purchase: 1803-2003 Geography What land did the Louisiana purchase include ? The United States' purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France doubled in a stroke of the pen the size of the young nation. At a total cost of $15 million, $3.75 million of which was paid in indemnities, Jefferson paid approximately 3 cents an acre for 529,920,000 acres of middle America. Thirteen states or parts of states have been carved from the Louisiana Purchase territory. Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Colorado and Montana each owe part or all of their geography to the 1803 Purchase.
The map above shows a rough view of the contiguous United States in gray, with the bulk of the land that was part of the Louisiana Purchase in black.

    http://www.challenge.state.la.us/k12act/data/acad/acad.html
    By Sylvia S. Bienvenu, Ed.S.
    BASIC OVERVIEW OF UNIT
The Acadians of Louisiana - A Story to Tell is a multidisciplinary unit which incorporates interaction with the Internet and hands - on collaborative activities which are primarily language arts based, but include learning and objectives in social studies, art, geography and mathematics. These lessons are designed to help students explore the history, mores, and influence of the Acadians who were exiled from Nova Scotia in 1765 and made their way to Louisiana. The goal is to encourage personal contact with those who know the poignant story best, through interviews with relatives and friends as well as over the Internet and to learn the art of storytelling in the process. The activities are designed to motivate students to write, illustrate, tell, and dramatize the stories they discover and to share those stories over the Internet. This unit can be adapted to serve other grade levels as well or adjusted for the needs of different ability groups The first four lessons focus on the oldest teaching format - storytelling - as a rich resource for understanding and building written and oral language while learning historical facts.

February 9, 2005 Editor's Note, September 8, 2005: "Down here when we speak of wetlands loss, it's actual, physical loss," said Mark Schexnayder, a marine biologist with the Louisiana State University Agricultural Extension and Research Center's Sea Grant Program. "You can't stand on [the land] anymore. It's gone." Coastal communities, many protected by small levee systems, already feel the brunt. With fewer wetlands to mitigate storm surges, residents and businesses are experiencing increased flooding. "With the rapidly depleting wetlands, people that have lived in southern Louisiana can tell that, over the last 30 years, large storms now come in faster, and the water rises faster, which gives less time to respond and less time to evacuate," said Denise Reed, a professor of geology and geophysics at the University of New Orleans. "In the next few years it's going to get worse."

March 23, 2004 The heads of state of France, Spain, and the United States, the three countries involved, had been invited, but they could not attend. Instead the Spanish ambassador to the United States, Francisco Viqueira, came to represent Spain, Jean-David Levitte, the French ambassador, was there for France, and United States Assistant Secretary of the Interior Craig Manson was there for the U.S. Representing American Indian tribes was Tex G. Hall (otherwise known as Red Tipped Arrow), president of the National Congress of American Indians. It was a sad occasion in some respects. Only days before, ten terrorist bombs had exploded in Spanish commuter trains, killing more than 200 people. The crowd observed a moment of silence to commemorate the Madrid dead. The original Three Flags Ceremony must have been a much more casual affair. We know that most of St. Louis came to watch flags raised and lowered and volleys of gunshot by U.S. soldiers, but the population of St. Louis in 1803 stood at about a thousand people, and that's fewer than attend a lot of high school football games.
