Louisiana, U.S. Political Geography
Related Category: U.S. Political Geography Louisiana [l u w E E u , l OO E Pronunciation Key Economy Louisiana's climate (subtropical in the south and temperate in the north) and rich alluvial soil make the state one of the nation's leading producers of sweet potatoes, rice, and sugarcane. Other major commodities are soybeans, cotton, and dairy products, and strawberries, corn, hay, pecans, and truck vegetables are produced in quantity. Fishing is a major industry; shrimp, menhaden, and oysters are principal catches. Louisiana is a leading fur-trapping state; its marshes (7,409 sq mi/19,189 sq km of the state's area is underwater) supply most of the country's muskrat furs. Pelts are also obtained from mink, nutria, coypus, opossums, otter, and raccoon. The state has great mineral wealth. It leads the nation in the production of salt and sulfur, and it ranks high in the production of crude petroleum (of which many deposits are offshore), natural gas, and natural-gas liquids. Timber is plentiful; forests cover almost 50% of the land area. The state rapidly industrialized in the 1960s and 70s and has giant oil refineries, petrochemical plants, foundries, and lumber and paper mills. Other industries produce foods, transportation equipment, and electronic equipment. Four of the ten busiest U.S. ports : New Orleans, South Louisiana, Baton Rouge, and Plaquemines : line the lower Mississippi River.

LA Louisiana, named in honor of the French King Louis XIV, has a colorful history. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with Napoleon. It was admitted to the Union as the 18th state in 1812. A strong French influence is still evident throughout the state. Situated in the Deep South, Louisiana lies where the mighty Mississippi empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Water routes link the state with both the heart of America and lands across the sea. The life of Louisiana is based on a mixture of many peoples, cultures and customs. Tourists visit New Orleans for the city's festive Mardi Gras, the old French Quarter and the city's jazz clubs. Other attractions include Acadiana, the homeland of the Cajuns, and magnificent old plantation homes.

What does this data set describe?
Title:
Parish Boundaries of Louisiana from LDOTD source data, Geographic NAD83, LOSCO (1999) [parishes]
Abstract:
This dataset depicts the polygon boundaries of the 64 parishes comprising the state of Louisiana. Parish boundaries extend 3 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico from the coastline. This dataset was derived from many data sources and conveys the best currently (1999) available representation of the parishes of Louisiana and as a consequence, the best currently available representation of the territorial bounds of the state. The dataset has as attributes, many demographic variables from 1990 Census data.
These metadata describe the Arc/Info coverage of name 'parishes' and the shapefile of the same name derived from it. These metadata also describe the dataset 'parishes,' which is how this dataset was named on the 'Louisiana GIS CD: A Digital Map of the State.'
