Lesson Plans and Classroom Activities about Louisiana Home State by State Lesson Plans - Alabama Lesson Plans Alaska Lesson Plans Arizona Lesson Plans Arkansas Lesson Plans ... Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. Teaching About the Louisiana Purchase
By John J. Patrick
August 2003
The year 2003 marks the bicentennial of the 1803 Treaty of France, by which the United States of America acquired the Louisiana Territory, an area of more than 828,000 square miles. Upon this acquisition, known as the Louisiana Purchase, the territory of the United States doubled. Historians consider the Louisiana Purchase to be a landmark event or turning point in American history. This Digest discusses (1) President Jefferson's decision to purchase the Louisiana Territory, (2) the
significant consequences of this decision in American history, and (3) methods of teaching about the Louisiana Purchase.
THE DECISION TO PURCHASE LOUISIANA
President Thomas Jefferson faced an important decision during the summer of 1803. Napoleon, the emperor of France, had offered to sell the territory of Louisiana to the United States for $15 million. This vast territory extended westward from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and southward from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico and the Spanish lands of what is now Texas and New Mexico.
Jefferson had offered to buy for $2 million only the region around the mouth of the Mississippi River, which included the port and city of New Orleans. The President wanted to protect the interests of farmers in the Ohio River Valley, who depended on access to New Orleans. They sent their crops down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, from which ships took the products to cities along the Atlantic coast of the United States. Americans feared that the French might interfere with their trade by imposing high taxes on products and ships moving through New Orleans. Even worse, the French might close the port to Americans.

Louisiana - A State Unit Study This mini unit on LOUISIANA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study LOUISIANA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about LOUISIANA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Louisiana's State Flag The design consists of the pelican group from the state seal, in white and gold, and a white ribbon bearing the state motto, "Union, Justice, and Confidence", on a field of a solid blue. Flag adopted 1912. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

With her rich heritage of Creole, Cajun, and French, Louisiana life is spiced up with foods like gumbo, andouille, etouffees, sauce piquantes, cayenne pepper, Tabasco, and crawfish. Both San Salvador and San Pedro Sula serve as regional hubs, connecting passengers from all over Central and South America, including known drug source countries such as Columbia and Venezuela, to New Orleans. To Top To Contents The Port of New Orleans is a transportation hub and distribution center for licit and illicit commodities. It is the second busiest container port on the Gulf Coast and the fourth busiest port in the United States. Smuggling occurs not only within containerized cargo, but also in shipments of bulk cargo such as iron ore and produce. Much of the trade is with drug source and transit nations in Latin America and the Caribbean. Drug traffickers use skilled welders in poor nations such as Haiti to modify cargo vessels so drugs can be stored within the structure of the ship. U.S. Customs Service (USCS) officials indicate that smuggling by crew members aboard cargo ships is also a significant problem. Louisiana, with 397 miles of Gulf Coastline, includes the Mississippi delta, gateway to the vast Mississippi River system.

Louisiana State University
The Program in Louisiana and Caribbean Studies
Louisiana and the Caribbean: a Cultural Gumbo Southerners traditionally have studied place with narrow area definitions. In the last twenty years innovative concepts of place, self, and region have been developed that give us dramatically new understandings of Louisiana as a rich multicultural society that is part of the South, yes, but also of a vibrant Caribbean world of many-faceted interactions among new immigrants from all parts of the world and long-established peoples of New and Old World origins and diasporas, including Native Americans and various Europeans, Africans and Asians. New Orleans emerges from this new concept of region as a transnational city and Louisiana and its Gulf neighbors as places connected as strongly across water as by landa variant on a common cultural and historical pattern. Our program in Louisiana and Caribbean Studies has developed from this recognition of the artificial nature of merely national boundaries and seeks to bring to public awareness Louisiana's rich and complex history of relationships with the peoples and cultures of the Caribbean. Encouraging interdisciplinary, multi-cultural approaches to region in scholarship and pedagogy, our program serves as an international resource to promote understanding of the vital cultural, human, historical, and economic connections between the islands and shores of the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast.
