Facing Challenges to Evolution Education
by Molleen Matsumura
In 1983, The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) was founded to promote excellence in science education, improve public understanding of evolution, and defend evolution education from sectarian attacks. In 1987, when the Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana anti-evolution law, many observers thought the "creation science" controversy had been put to an end. Instead, it returned to the local level, where new strategies appeared in countless communities; eventually, the problem re-appeared at the state level as well. More and more parents, teachers, and citizens are looking for guidance in coping with the evolution/creation controversy in their communities. Here are descriptions of strategies that are commonly used in attempts to force "creation science" into public schools, and suggestions on how to respond: Proposals to teach "creation science" may be disguised by euphemisms such as "arguments against evolution" or "alternative theories", "balanced treatment," "intelligent design theory", "abrupt appearance theory", "irreducible complexity."

President, Xavier University of Louisiana AN OPEN MESSAGE TO THE XAVIER COMMUNITY Dr. Norman C. Francis, President September 9, 2005 Dear Members of the Xavier Family: Prayers have been offered for the safety and well being of all who have suffered in the continuing devastation from Hurricane Katrina. None of us has been untouched. It is a very difficult time, and it will be difficult for some time to come. At the moment we are making progress toward resurrecting our normal communication processes. There are still many questions that we are unable to answer at this time, but hope to answer later. Also, there are circumstances beyond our control, and therefore we must make appropriate adjustments as the circumstances require. Our lives and other normally accepted conditions have been dramatically changed. Most of us are still in temporary living circumstances, with major decisions yet to be made. We must be thankful to God that we are alive to regroup, and to continue our mission. In disasters, there are always problems with effective communication; and the lack of information spurns rumors of varying dimensions and distortions. The following is a compilation of facts and information based on reports from various staff members who were on campus before, during and after Katrina. In addition, this memorandum will provide information on academic policy and processes for students and faculty:
