The Last 150 Years
by Thomas H. Clancy, S.J. When Huey Long became governor of Louisiana there were 331 miles of paved roads and three major bridges in the state highway system. In a state with as much water as Louisiana it is difficult to think ourselves back to a time when every lake, river, and bayou except three had to be crossed by boat. That was 1928. But here's an even more staggering challenge to the imagination. Go back almost a century further and think of the state of Louisiana with a grand total of 26 churches and 24 priests. It's no wonder then that Bishop Leo De Neckere, the fifth bishop of New Orleans, was tempted to highjack four French Jesuits who arrived in the port of New Orleans in January of 1831. They were on their way to Bardstown, Kentucky to help Bishop Flaget in his new diocese. Bishop De Neckere succeeded in detaining them almost a year and even after three of them departed one, Fr. Pierre Ladavidre, continued to work in New Orleans and Southern Louisiana as a traveling missionary. When Bishop De Neckere died Fr. Ladavidre administered the diocese

Boarding Schools - Military Schools Discipline
There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots. There, members of Alpha Company that's all the girls are scrutinized for signs of excessive grooming. Sparkle nail polish and heavy makeup are banned. Hair must be tied neatly into military buns or cut above the collar.

Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

Clark Davis Adams
From: Clark Davis Adams ( cadams@infidels.org ) Subject: Here's My Story... Date: 29 Dec 1995 Okay, my turn. A couple of years ago I won an honorable mention prize in FFRF's college essay contest for my essay, "Growing Up an Atheist in the Religious Mid-South." In 1994, I gave a similar speech at the Fourth of July Lake Hypatia Monster Gala. Of course, I can't find the electronic version of either (I just moved), so I get to shoot from the hip :). Here is the story of my intellectual development, and the consequences which followed. I apologize for the length, but I think all of the information is important to the story. I also apologize for the informal style, as much of the stuff here is very emotional to me and nobody besides myself proofread it before I submitted it: I was born in July, 1969 (Space Baby :) in Louisville, KY, USA, a typical Midwestern town to a typical Midwestern middle class family (with two kids instead of two-and-a-half). My father was, and still is, a non-practicing Presby-Methodist who never attends church. My mother was a Roman Catholic who saw fit I be reared as such. FWIW, she now attends a liberal Methodist church because the minister, a female, is a close friend of hers. I was carried to church and "CCD" classes (that's what we called catechism classes) from the start. I didn't mind them at first, because it was just "play time," and when you are a toddler, toys rule. When I was 6, we moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. I still was treated to weekly, and sometimes, semi-weekly doses of religious instruction. I gradually began to dislike them because it appeared to me that they were becoming more indoctrinating, and less playing. I remember my first hint of skepticism: We learned of the bible fable of Sodom and Gomorrah (not in any detail as we were quite young). When I was told that Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt for looking back at the city, my first reaction was that god was like a "bully." Even at a pretty early age, I knew that bible-god's punishment did not fit the crime.

What is Alcohol? Alcohol is the name to given a variety of related compounds; the drinkable form is ethanol, or ethyl alcohol. It is a powerful, addictive, central nervous system depressant produced by the action of yeast cells on carbohydrates in fruits and grains. There are three basic types of alcoholic drinks. Beer is made from fermented grains and has an alcohol content of three to six percent. Wine is made from fermented fruits and has an alcohol content of 11 to 14 percent. Some wine drinks, such as wine coolers, have fruit juice and sugar added, lowering alcohol content to between four and seven percent. Fortified wines, such as port, have alcohol added, bringing alcohol content to between 18 and 20 percent.
