    Discovery Tour to Malawi
    by Helen C. Broadus
Venue International Professionals, Inc. held a Familiarization (FAM) Tour to Malawi in conjunction with the Africa Travel Association's 26th Annual Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. 2001. see Malawi map BACKGROUND . Malawi is known affectionately as the "warm Heart of Africa", where visitors are welcomed with open arms and made to feel at home by friendly people. Formerly called Nyasaland (Land of the Lakes), it is one of Africa's most beautiful countries and is an affordable tourist destination that compares in scenic beauty to some of the world's top resorts. For a country that is completely landlocked, it is best known for its 558 km-long Lake Malawi that runs down the eastern side of the country but also has an abundance of spectacular wildlife, incredible scenery and genuinely friendly people. Lake Malawi, affectionately called the "Lake of a Thousand Shinning Stars" is the largest freshwater body in the world. Basically it is just like an inland sea, offering picturesque golden beaches in a year-round tropical sunny climate. One can simply just relax on an uncrowded beach or hand feed tropical fish at the lake's freshwater national park, which has been declared a national heritage site by UNESCO

    Commentary: Call of the conscience
Continued from page 1 Page: A nasty insult, that - hardly paying fair tribute to the white world's long record of warmongering and plundering. But never mind the West's own violent propensities or its historical role in Africa's plight. Let's stick with the present. Hopelessness is an attitude, not a fact of life. Those who call Africa hopeless have determined not to care about it. They've chosen to write off 54 diverse countries in a fell swoop - tossing out millions of African babies with a bit of tainted bathwater. Why can't these baby-tossers imagine Africa as it could be? Why can't they take heart from the green of Africa's spring, the glimmer of its democratic renaissance? The unquenchable light in Nelson Mandela's eyes? What keeps them from taking note of the great phoenix of South Africa? Uganda's quest against AIDS and poverty? Malawi's guarantee of free primary education? Botswana's tribal tradition of democracy? Mozambique's economic reforms? Nigeria's move from military rule?

Introduction The purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between animism and water. Animism can be defined as either "the belief that natural objects, natural phenomena and the universe itself possess souls, or the belief that natural objects have souls that may exist apart from their material bodies ." Viewed in such terms, animistic religions accord water a supernatural life force. The manner in which it visualises this life force is dependent upon the specific beliefs of the people in relation to the environment that they inhabit. The range of examples for this article is not limited to one continent, but as is the case with animism, will take into account relevant beliefs from different geographical locations. Animistic religion may lead to the belief in specific water spirits, or the water itself may even be imbued with supernatural qualities, qualities which prove to be enduring despite supercedence by Islamic or Christian religion. In some cases, the influences of animism may lead to attempts to make rain, usually through the use of "medicines" to either create rain clouds or act as a supplication to a supreme being with the power to grant the needed rain. As there is a large scope for study, there will be an attempt to highlight common features that will allow comparison between animistic religions and their relevance to water.

Yet despite its significance, it seems to be facing increasing threats of environmental degradation from man-made causes. Deforestation, encroachment, harmful fires, invasive species, pollution, and illegal harvesting of resources are just some of the problems threatening the reserve at the present time. The Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve is in Mulanje and Phalombe districts which have one of the largest population densities in Malawi and this is undoubtedly causing stress and strain on the local environment.
