    What is Logo Programming?
Logo is a high-level programming language noted for its ease of use and graphics capabilities. Logo's syntax is more understandable for novices. Logo is so easy that it can be understood by the 7 to 77 years old. Logo's graphics language is called turtle graphics, which allows complex graphics images to be created with a minimum of coding. Logo is the simplest programming language. It was developed by Seymour Papert in 1968. It was developed originally as a teaching tool. Logo has evolved into a powerful computer language. There are about 200 commands and operations. Though Logo is a complete language it is mainly used for drawing. For more information about the importance of logo go to www.terrapinlogo.com

    LOGO Programming
    - an introduction to Logo by Mike Koss In the fall of 1995 I started teaching my son's second grade class how to program using the LOGO programming language. Logo is wonderful because for very little work you can get some great graphical feedback. One of the themes of my class has been demonstrating that some seemingly complex things are in reality created by very simple processes. We use MSW Logo implemented by George Mills . This version of LOGO is easy to install and runs on Windows 3.1 (there is also a 32 bit version available for Win95 and NT). There are some quirks in this implementation (like having to quote variable names with a semicolon to use their value) but the kids have had good luck using it for the small programs they're writing.

    History
Logo was developed by a team from MIT, Logo was originally designed to introduce children to programming concepts, to develop better thinking skills that could be transferred to other contexts. Logo was supposed to be a language for the teaching of mathe matical ideas to children through computer programming. It was intended to be easy to learn, easy to use, easy to read, but also powerful and able to cope with complex problems. It was then discovered that Logo extended far beyond mathematical areas The man who became the spoke person for this language was Seymour Papert. The slogan used for Logo was "A language for learning." There is a double meaning behind this slogan. First Logo is a language for learning to compute, or "program a computer" (Logo Thinking). Second Logo is a language to make computing as simple as po ssible to understand for the user (Learning with Logo) First Logo means Logo Thinking - Logo helps the user in learning to compute by describing ideas and processes with Logo programs, and understanding how to translate pseudocode, into a working Logo program.

The Logo Programming Language, a dialect of Lisp, was designed as a tool for learning. Its features - interactivity, modularity, extensibility, flexibility of data types - follow from this goal. Interactivity Although there are some versions of Logo that compile, it is generally implemented as an interpreted language. The interactivity of this approach provides the user with immediate feedback on individual instructions, thus aiding in the debugging and learning process. Error messages are descriptive. For example fowad I don't know how to fowad (The word fowad is not a primitive - one of Logo's built in words - nor a procedure that you've defined.)
