The parasitic economic interests of indigenous African chiefs and kings
were the basis of the tribal "indigenous African institutions and value

systems" that my ancestors were sold to European slavers, and why I am
in America today. And you want to go back to that? Obviously I don't.
Lil Joe,
I feel compelled to respond to this, not to whitewash or blackwash
(choose which verb applies) an ignoble practice that saw millions
shackled and deprived of basic dignity. Rather, it is to dispel certain myths pertaining to the participation of our ancestors in the slave trade. MYTH No. 1: Africans were selling themselves off into slavery before the Europeans on the continent. It is true there was slavery in Africa but not the inhumane chattel variety. Slaves in Africa enjoyed certain rights and privileges.

(Source: U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, World Factbook 2003) Efforts with The Carter Center and the government of Burkina Faso have resulted in a 98 percent reduction in cases of Guinea worm in the nation in 2003. Building Hope Formerly known as Upper Volta, Burkina Faso achieved independence from France in 1960. With few natural resources and a high population density, the people of Burkina Faso are some of the poorest in West Africa and the world. Many must travel to neighboring Cote d'Ivoire or Ghana to find work. The problems facing the people of Burkina Faso are not easy, but The Carter Center hopes that through a partnership with the government of Burkina Faso, agricultural development and disease eradication programming will empower the nation. Fighting Disease Guinea Worm Eradication Program Current Status: Endemic
Indigenous cases reported in 2004:
The Carter Center's Guinea Worm Eradication Program has worked in conjunction with the government of Burkina Faso and other international organizations to eradicate Guinea worm disease from Burkina Faso since the national program began in 1992. The Burkina Faso program has been a great success: the incidence of Guinea worm disease has been reduced more than 99 percent, from 11,784 cases in 1992 to 35 indigenous cases reported in 2004.

Abidjan: Paris of West Africa
By day, The Plateau is a wonderful place to take a stroll, visiting the many shops and relaxing in one of the parks or at a sidewalk. At night, the focus of activity shifts to Treichville, where you will find lively nightclubs and the highly popular Maquis restaurants offering cheap food that encompasses everything from Lebanese specialities to authentic West African dishes.
In the daytime, the Treichville Market is a haven for bargain hunters. In 1997 it burned to the ground, but many merchants have set up sidewalk stalls during construction of the New Market.
Entering Yamoussoukro, you will immediately be impressed by the Notre Dame de la Paix basilica, its enormous dome towering above the horizon. Built at a cost of over US$400 million, it dominates the skyline and is the largest cathedral in Africa and the tallest church in the Christian world. Skilled artisans in France fashioned its 36 immense stained-glass windows.
The former Presidential Palace is used by relatives and is off limits to visitors. But you can approach the estate on a small bridge across an artificial lake that is teeming with dozens of crocodiles. These are fed in late afternoon, providing a guaranteed close-up view of this feared reptile.

Notes for Viewing the Film Before the film . . . Read the essay on Keita It may be useful to remind viewers that Keita really tells two parallel stories. The first is taken from the Sundjata Epic where the hero, Sundjata Keita, overcomes his disability and discovers his magic powers. The second story concerns the initiation of his distant descendant Mabo Keita, a young, contemporary Burkinabe boy, into this tradition. Both stories are about "learning the meaning of your name," that is, assuming your full adult powers and obligations. The Sundjata Epic is the most celebrated work of West African oral literature. Keita only retells the first third of the epic (a complete rendition can last 60 hours). The epic describes the legendary founding of the Malian Empire in the 13th century by Sundjata Keita. It is also the epic of the origin of the Mande people who presently inhabit parts of Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Conakry. The story begins when a traditional storyteller, a griot or
