Living History Museum
This is a sample chapter from In Times Past : An Encyclopedia for Integrating US History with Literature in Grades 3-8 by Carol Otis Hurst and Rebecca Otis ( Order from Amazon.com . SRA/McGraw-Hill, 1993. ISBN 0-7829-0155-7)
One of the most exciting things that has happened for students of history and the general public in recent years is the creation of living history museums. In these museums, people live and work the way they did in that area in the past, assuming the roles of real settlers. Visitors to a living museum often get a more real sense of the time by observing and interacting with the personnel than they would have by just viewing displays of artifacts or homes. The inhabitants of these villages learn the crafts and speech of the era and work for complete authenticity based on careful research.

"The Robot Zoo"
Oct. 1, 2005 through Jan. 8, 2006 Children can explore the biomechanics of complex animal robots to discover how real animals work in the touring exhibit, "The Robot Zoo." Three robot animals and seven hands-on activities illustrate fascinating real-life characteristics, such as how a chameleon changes colors and how a fly walks on the ceiling. The larger-than-life-size animated robots include a chameleon and a platypus. Also featured is a house fly with a 3-foot wingspread. Machinery in the robot animals simulates the body parts of their real-life counterparts. In the robot animals, muscles become pistons, intestines become filtering pipes and brains become computers. Sensory activities include "Swat the Fly," a test of the visitor's reaction time (one-twelfth as fast as a house fly's), and "Sticky Feet," where visitors wearing special hand and knee pads can try to stick like flies to a sloped surface. Triggering the "Tongue Gun" demonstrates how a real chameleon shoots out its long, sticky-tipped tongue to reel in a meal. The exhibit was developed by Clear Channel Exhibitons and is based on the book "The Robot Zoo" that was conceived, edited and designed by Marshall Editions of London, England.

Talbot House today is a living museum. The House was also the foundation of the worldwide Toc H Movement. Many well-known personalities visited the house during the Great War. Some left works of art behind and these original paintings and drawings are still in the house today. Photographs depicting life at the club and in the Ypres Salient can be viewed too.
The Restored Concert Hall
The renovation of the former hop store, which was listed as an official monument in 1998, took several years. The building was in decay when it was purchased. Thanks to the financial support from the Town of Poperinge , the Flemish Government and the European programme EFRO, the monument could be restored in its original state. Extra care was spent on the relics of industrial-archaeological heritage remaining in the building.

With Orlando quickly emerging as the new Promised Land for Christian ministries (CT, Feb. 8, 1999 ), it is not surprising that ground is being broken for the region's first religious-themed attraction. Orlando already is the world's theme park capital. But Zion's Hope, an evangelistic ministry to Jews, plans to open by next fall a $10 million "living museum" called the Holy Land Experience. Executive director Marvin Rosenthal will oversee construction of the seven-acre complex just up the road from Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World. It will focus on Jerusalem, a city sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and will feature both scale and full-sized replicas of Herod's temple, the Garden Tomb, and the caves of Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. People portraying characters from the Old and New Testaments will emerge from a Bedouin tent to tell stories. Some central Florida Jewish leaders voiced concern that the attraction could be used for stealth evangelism. Rosenthal says the enterprise will not be used to proselytize.

Educational Programs at ISM - Springfield
The Museum has a comprehensive suite of school and public educational programming in place to educate the public about the natural history, anthropology, fine art, and decorative art of Illinois. The philosophy of the education program is multi-fold: to serve as an interpretive link to the Museum's exhibits and collections thus bringing these resources to life; to stimulate learning at all age levels - from preschoolers to Elderhostel participants; to cultivate a relationship with segments of the comm unity not traditionally served by museums; to share our educational resources, the expertise of our curators, the many objects in our collections, and other items with the broader education community of Illinois. Combined, the elements of this philosophy create a dynamic, audience-sensitive approach to educational programming.
Research Programs
Illinois State Museum researchers investigate the climate, landforms, plants, animals, and human cultures of the Midwestern United States with a special emphasis on Illinois. Research illuminates long-term changes in natural environments and human societ ies and provides interdisciplinary perspectives of the rich natural and cultural history of the state.

When's a zoo not a zoo
When is a zoo not a zoo? Well, actually the California Living Museum (CALM) in Bakersfield is a zoo, housing native animals who have been injured and/or abandoned that cannot care for themselves. But it has always been much more with a vibrant landscape featuring native vegetation and a natural history museum, too. Still, from July 18-22, CALM was even more – it was a "Zoo School" from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. for children in grades 4-6. More
Gifts from 'HolidayLights'
Part of the excitement of "HolidayLights @ CALM," currently on display through Dec. 30, is taking home the memories. The California Living Museum's (CALM) newly expanded gift shop is now a fourth larger and features one-of-a-kind treasures sure to leave a memorable impression of visiting CALM long after the "HolidayLights" season concludes. By expanding in size, the gift shop has added space to offer a wider variety of items and allow visitors to shop in relative ease. During "HolidayLights," part of the auditorium is even being utilized, providing extra room for CALM's extended holiday inventory of gifts including Wildlife Artists Association artwork of which part of the proceeds will benefit CALM. CALM festive with train/'Lights'
An unusual sight greets visitors to the California Living Museum (CALM) in Bakersfield these days — a train festively decorated with holiday lights. It is the Central California Children's Railroad and was delivered to CALM on Nov. 18, just in time for the Nov. 26 opening of the annual "HolidayLights @ CALM designed by Josh Barnett's Lightasmic!" As members of the local news media gathered around, Warner Brooks, retired educator and architect for the small scale railroad, answered questions about the unique display which will become a permanent attraction at CALM in the not too distant future. Brooks said, that when the project is complete, it will be part of a planned one third expansion of CALM, affording families an opportunity to view new animal habitats and scenic landscapes on the one-half mile railroad loop around the zoo.

The Essential New York Tour City: State: NY Country: Arrival date: Nights: People: Rooms: Along the bumpy cobblestone streets towards Pier 17you'll find the South Street Seaport. Located down Fulton Street, this maritime museum reflects New York City's past glory as a port town. As the center of shipping between 1815 and 1860, the seaport was known by the seafaring around the globe. The bustling community that developed catered to the sailors' needs. Merchants, ship chandlers, sailmakers and figurehead carvers took care of business while boarding houses, saloons and brothels took care of pleasure. By 1880, cargo ships ballooned in size and the industry grew out of South Street. For many decades the Seaport lay quiet. Would time just wipe away another bit of New York's history? In 1967, thanks to Peter and Norma Stanford, the South Street Seaport Maritime Museum paved the way for the wonderfully preserved historic district we can visit today.
