Statement of Purpose
The California Living Museum (CALM) is a zoo, botanic garden, and natural history museum dedicated to teaching a respect for all living things by exhibiting the diversity of native aniamls and plants plus the uniqueness of California in geology and paleontology. CALM was established in 1980 and opened in 1983 with a mission to teach a respect for all living things through: education, recreation, research, and conservation. CALM was envisioned and originated by local community leaders and supported for its first 15 years solely by business and individual contributors with lots of volunteer assistance. In July of 1998 CALM partnered with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools to secure its long-term operation. Community support and volunteers will always be a critical component to enhance CALM's expansion and education mission.
CALM is California's premier native zoobotanic garden, and natural history museum that displays only California natives.

Old Dwelling (above) and an Ancient Viking Church Transplanted in the Folkemuseum By M. D. Jones,
Assistant Engineer,
Richmond Sweden and Norway have an old civilization developed during many centuries uninterrupted by historical catastrophe. Those northern countries have never been subdued by foreign races throughout the last 2,000 years, and although their history records terrible and bloody wars, none has been carried deeply into their territories. Their civilization has been spared pillage and destruction and much has been preserved of the early environment and customs. It is through preservation of this heritage that future generations may possess treasures of incalculable historical interest in the form of living museums where the observer may go back for a day and live the life of his ancestors. It is not by mere accident, therefore, that archeology, as well as ethnographical research, has flourished so richly within the boundaries of the northern countries. In many nations, much of the life of early inhabitants has been lost to history, and it has become impossible for new generations to obtain a picture of the progress and appreciate the true character of their people. The preservation of a few houses and their furnishings is good enough to convey an impression of a segment of the life of the past; but such preservation, if supplemented by that of the characteristic environment, affords at once a vivid and authentic picture of early days. Norway and Sweden have built living outdoor museums where the life of early ancestors is preserved for observation and study by the descendants.

Living Landscapes was created by the Royal British Columbia Museum as a regional outreach program involving intensive cooperation with other museums, First Nations, educators, naturalists, and other agencies. Our goal is to encourage and facilitate the exploration and appreciation of the human and natural history of British Columbia from regional perspectives. We approach this goal through a two-year focus on a particular region of B.C. and integrating stories and research locally generated with both research knowledge and descriptive information from the collections and curatorial staff at the Royal British Columbia Museum. The Horse Living Museum in Chantilly
Dating back to the kings of France, the beautiful and large forests north of Paris such as Compiègne and Chantilly are an ideal destination for a rest out of Paris. They are particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves are yellow and red. In addition to the beauty of nature, these forests also have an entrenched equine tradition. Chantilly, a charming little town north of Charles de Gaulle airport, has a forest, a castle, a racetrack and, close to the track, spectacular 18th century horse stables. In 1982, they were turned into the Horse Living Museum by Yves Bienaimé, a passionate professional horseback rider. The museum's unique concept makes it a must for lovers of horses and art. It is indeed a museum, but it is at the same time a place for horses and horseback riders. Go there to look at art inspired by horses, horse shows, horse training and horse equipment.
