The King calls these research and demonstration centres living museums, These living museums, however, are no ordinary farm research centres.

What are His Majesty the King's development visions that could ensure the majority of Thais a reasonable standard of living and cushion them from future economic crises? Visit the King's "Living Museums" for the answer. Among the royal advice to be found there: restore the environment, respect natural and cultural diversity, listen to the locals, go for simplicity, forego inter-agency rivalry and strive for self-reliance. The museums, known officially as Royal Development Study Centres, show His Majesty's holistic and pragmatic development approach governed by Buddhist philosophy. They also imply a major bureaucratic overhaul would be needed for his visions to be fully realised Sanitsuda Ekachai A fter several decades of modern development in Thailand, the gap between the rich and the poor is wider than ever, while the natural environment, the people's source of sustenance, is in tatters. With the economic crisis plunging the rural folks deeper into hardship, how can we turn things around?

nature to help it recover its balance. But for His Majesty the King, the restoration of the
balance of nature is not an end in itself. It is a means to guarantee a vigorous, life-sustaining
system for the rural poor.
In a marriage of nature and human effort, His Majesty has invented a method to speed up
reforestation by building hundreds of small, simple check-dams, using bricks and earth,
in the mountain streams. The aim is to spread the moisture to a wider area and retain it to nurture
the trees for as long as possible, before the water flows into the reservoir below. By keeping
the forest soil damp, fires are prevented, thus allowing the forest to regenerate more quickly.

online from Black Country Living Museum based on the BCN in Dudley. A friendly welcome awaits you at one of Britain's best open air museums. Discover a fascinating and different world where an old-fashioned village has been recreated by the canal as a living tribute to the skills and enterprise of the people of the Black Country, once the Industrial Heart of Britain. You can wander around shops and houses, ride on a tramcar or fairground swingboat or just soak up the atmosphere. The exhibits reflect the industrial heritage of the area, an ironworks with rolling mill, a coal mine with colliery engine and a Newcomen Engine (a replica of the world's first steam engine), all in action on specific dates. The village is surrounded on three sides by canal, the Dudley Tunnel Branch of the Birmingham Canal system and two arms, one to old lime kilns and the other to a fully functioning boatdock. The boatdock is typical of the many built on the Black Country canals. Three boats can be drawn out of the water sideways and it is fully equipped to repair and build working narrowboats. Many of the dock buildings have been built from redundant boats. Dudley Tunnel is 3154 yards long and connects to an unique network of caverns and canal branches which served the limestone mines beneath Castle Hill, preserved almost without change for two hundred years. You can take a trip through some of the network on an electrically powered trip boat from the museum. Only electrically propelled boats are allowed in the tunnel due to lack of ventilation, boats used to have to be

The 'Canal Age', although short, was responsible for opening up Britain to the Industrial Revolution, much as the Internet is now opening up the world to the Information Revolution. Because transport became cheaper, goods and products need no longer be locally produced in small numbers, they could be mass produced at greatly reduced costs. Populations moved to service the factories and mills and their environment and ways of life were irreversibly changed. The best places to see the story of the changes that the canals wrought are in the waterways museums. The best known are the Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne in Northamptonshire, the Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire (right) and the National Waterways Museum at Gloucester Docks, now under common management and forming The National Collection of waterways history. There are are several smaller canal museums and many kindred exhibitions and interpretation centres all over the canal system.
