The Rise And Fall Of The Cattle Culture by Jeremy Rifkin
The Western world has a love affair with beef. But how many people are aware that the real costs of the cattle culture are animal suffering, global hunger and poverty, and environmental devastation? In this brilliant and scathing examination, Jeremy Rifkin cuts through the myth of the cowboy to reveal the international intrigue, political giveaways, and sheer avarice that transformed the great American frontier into a huge cattle breeding ground. He illustrates the gross injustice of a world in which the poorest peoples have been starved to support the appetites of a handful of wealthy nations. "So many powerful arguments...Before starting Beyond Beef , take a third of a pound of ground beef, broil it for about four minutes on each side, place it on a bun, and then savour every bite. You're not going to want another hamburger for a long, long time."
Newsweek "An extremely important book...In every generation there is a handful of people whose work contributes to the evolution of consciousness. Jeremy Rifkin is one of the seminal minds of our age."

Directory Looking Backward and Forward The Deep Ecology Platform Visionaries, Friends and Colleagues ... The Way Ahead Considerable portions of each year's budget are dedicated to in-house book projects in one or more program areas and to supporting authors, journals, radio series, and advertising campaigns covering critical issues either poorly reported on or not even understood by the mainstream press. Large photo books such as Clearcut Fatal Harvest and Welfare Ranching are conceived and executed as discrete projects under the Foundation's direction. Today's publishing economy is particularly short on promotion budgets for such subjects, and often books on eco-philosophy, ecological worldviews and environmental issues are produced in small quantities. The Foundation has supported the publicity, promotion and distribution of books deemed important to its mission, especially in the area of environmental ethics and philosophy. Subsidizing advertising, book tours, and promotions can build interest and help bring a greater number of important ideas to more readers. In terms of broadcast media, the Foundation generally does not fund television, video, or film but prefers radio formats instead. A number of series and individual programs have resulted from working with independent radio producers. Radio has proven particularly good at reaching a well-educated audience interested in advancing their understanding of complex issues such as globalization, ecocentric thought, and megatechnology.

Livestock Owners Urged to Watch Out for Ergot
A fungus that grows on ryegrass and cereals has caused gangrene in livestock on several properties across the State. Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA) has recorded a number of incidents particularly in the mid north, Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas. "Ergot looks like small black mouse droppings and ‘grows’ in the seed head. It is often two to three times the length of a normal grain," Dr Weaver said. "Ergot is a fungus ( Claviceps purpurea ) that invades the seed of cereals and grasses and produces a very powerful toxin. Ergot in annual ryegrass is the most toxic ergot and it is more of a problem in barley than other grains. Dr Weaver said affected stock lose the ability to keep themselves cool.

BBC world affairs correspondent
Scenes from Niger Livestock in Niger and across the Sahel region of West Africa are suffering an unprecedented crisis because of a lack of fodder.
The amount available to cattle herders in Niger this year is the lowest ever recorded, according to an inquiry by aid agencies and the government. Severe food shortages are also affecting millions of people in Niger. But development experts say that without livestock as an economic buffer famines among humans will re-occur. 'Double whammy' The cause of the current human famine is an early end to last season's rainy season, locusts and chronic long-term poverty in Niger, the second poorest country in the world. But experts say long-term solutions to the current crisis will have to take account of the needs of animals, as well as people. Tens of thousands of children in Niger are starving Livestock like cows and goats are the only form of capital most people in the Sahel region have to protect them against disasters like uncertain rainfall and plagues of locusts.
