The producer can continue dealing with their local market who will list, video and handle the weighing and financial transactions between the buyer and seller. The individual producer's videos will be collected by the Red Deer office and forwarded to RDTV who will be handling the production and uplink to the satellite during the auction sale. Satellite viewing is being done at many participating markets where buyers assemble and bid to ringmen who have a telephone hookup to sales headquarters. In addition US and Canadian buyers are also able to pick up the sale on their own dishes. The buyer's name or number is announced when the cattle are sold. The advantage for the seller using the services will be selling cattle to a broad base of buyers and the security of dealing with your local market.

Market activity remained at a stalemate for the week, with packer bids being between $82-84 live, $131-135 dressed and feedlots asking $87-90, $137-140. Packer margins were said to be sliding towards the negative double digits, thus slowing packer demand for slaughter-ready cattle. A proposal to change the Endangered Species Act was passed by the House Resources Committee today. The bill now will move to the full House for consideration and a vote. The bill includes language that would compensate landowners for land or land use that is lost due to critical habitat designation or other actions associated with ESA. The vote today was 25-12. Cargill has entered into a preliminary agreement to purchase Fresno, CA-based Beef Packers Inc. (BPI), and its processing and transportation subsidiaries. No financial details of the agreement are known, however, BPI officials said that Cargill will continue to operate BPI as a processor of predominantly older and dairy-influenced cattle. amici curiae briefs with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals favoring R-CALF's en banc appeal of the court's earlier ruling to reopen the U.S. border to Canadian cattle.

Introduction to Medicinal Plants for Livestock
The idea of using medicinal plants to treat livestock is not new. Many of the active ingredients in chemically manufactured drugs were originally derived from plant compounds (e.g., the pyrethroids). Also, in many developing countries, medicinal plants are still being used on a regular basis. (The use of plants and traditional methods for treating animals is called ethnoveterinary medicine .) There is a renewed interest, especially in developed countries, in using plants to treat livestock, pets, and humans. Why?
    • Many people believe that plants are less toxic and safer than manufactured drugs.
