SPRINGTIME EARLY SPRING SPECIES are printed in green. During the period March to May, many species are beginning to become active. Kentish Glory is one of the first to be available as eggs and larvae. The New Zealand Admirals are interesting new additions to our list. Emperor and Tau Emperor soon follow, both easy species to rear. Post hibernation larvae become available, notably quantities of Marsh, Heath and Glanville Fritillary, Black-veined White, Scarlet, Jersey and Garden Tigers, The first Silkmoths begin to breed: we particularly recommend the Indian and American Moon Moths, Chinese Oak Silkmoth and the Robin Moth. Early Hawkmoths start, especially the Poplar, Eyed and Lime Hawks. APRIL TO AUGUST
This is the period of greatest activity - availability changes quickly: another good reason to place orders ahead whenever possible. Following the flurry of spring activity, there are three months in which many species become available as eggs and larvae. Stock marked winter is held in cool conditions and can still be ordered in the earlier summer months, unless supplies have sold out. Once into late July there is still a range of eggs and larvae, though less of a choice of species. These include some temperate species but are stronger in exotic Lepidoptera.

    Livestock Production Contract Checklist
INTRODUCTION A. Trend Towards Production Contracting/Definitions. There is a new era of livestock production on the rise in Iowa and across the nation. Traditional patterns of livestock production are giving way to new care and feeding arrangements. Many of these arrangements involve livestock production contracts. A livestock production contract can be defined as an agreement under which a producer agrees to feed and care for livestock owned by a contractor in return for a payment. Production contracts should be distinguished from marketing agreements, cash forward contracts, and futures contracts which involve the sale of livestock produced and owned by the producer.

Attorney General Miller Comment on Proposed USDA Livestock Reporting Rules
DES MOINES. Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller sent a letter April 17 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture submitting a formal Comment on USDA's proposed rules to implement the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act of 1999. For example, Attorney General Miller stated that the new data should be reported on a state and regional level, and not on the national level alone. Because the market for slaughter hogs is in most cases a local market, the proposal to report data only on a national level actually decreases the accuracy of the present regional reporting system, the Comment argues. For more information on the Attorney General's Comment on the proposed rules, please contact Asst. Attorney General Steve Moline of the Farm Division at 515-281-6634. Cattle (called simply cows in vernacular usage) are domesticated ungulates , a member of the subfamily Bovinae of the family Bovidae . They are raised as livestock for meat (called beef and veal dairy products milk leather and as draught animals (pulling carts plows and the like). In some countries, such as India , they are subject to religious ceremonies and respect. It is estimated that there are 1.3 billion head of cattle in the world today Cattle were originally identified by Carolus Linnaeus as three separate species. These were Bos taurus , the European cattle, including similar types from Africa and Asia; Bos indicus , the zebu ; and the extinct Bos primigenius , the aurochs . The aurochs is ancestral to both zebu and European cattle. More recently these three have increasingly been grouped as one species, sometimes using the names Bos primigenius taurus Bos primigenius indicus and Bos primigenius primigenius . Complicating the matter is the ability of cattle to interbreed with other closely related species. Hybrid individuals and even breeds exist, not only between European cattle and zebu but also with
