75th ANNUAL 4-H SHOW 1. 4-H members are encouraged to turn in 4-H enrollment forms by March 1. 2. A club member shall be between grade 3 on January 1 to 18 years of age sometime within the calendar year. He or she should also reside in Delaware County, attend a school in Delaware County, or be a member of a Delaware County 4-H Club. 3. 4-H Junior Leaders must be at least in grade 7 on January 1. These individuals help other 4-H'ers in the county and assist the Adult Leaders with planning of local meetings and activities. The County Junior Leader Organization meets almost monthly for fellowship and information sharing. 4. A record book or sheet must be completely filled out and signed by their Adult 4-H Leader for each project carried. Record period will be from the time the project is started until the opening date of the show. 5. All exhibits are to be in place by the time the show starts and will remain in place until the exhibits are officially released. These times are printed for each show or exhibit. 6. 4-H exhibits must be prepared during the current 4-H year. The current 4-H year is from last year's state fair to this year's state fair.

Hereford The Hereford breed was founded some two and one-half centuries ago as a product of necessity. Thrifty and enterprising farmers near Hereford in the County of Herefordshire, England , were determined to produce beef for the expanding food market created by Britain's industrial revolution. To succeed in Herefordshire, these early-day cattlemen realized they must have cattle which could efficiently convert their native grass to beef and do it at a profit. There was no breed in existence at the time to fill that need, so the farmers of Herefordshire founded the beef breed that logically became known as Herefords. These early Hereford breeders molded their cattle with the idea in mind of a high yield of beef and efficiency of production, and so firmly fixed these characteristics that they remain today as outstanding characteristics of the breed. Beginning in 1742 with a bull calf from the cow Silver and two cows, Pidgeon and Mottle, inherited from his father's estate, Benjamin Tomkins is credited with founding the Hereford breed. This was 18 years before Robert Bakewell began developing his theories of animal breeding. From the start, Mr. Tomkins had as his goals economy in feeding, natural aptitude to grow and gain from grass and grain, rustling ability, hardiness, early maturity and prolificacy, traits that are still of primary importance today. Other pioneering breeders were to follow the Tomkins' lead and establish the world-wide renown for the Herefordshire cattle causing their exportation from England to wherever grass grows and beef production is possible.

Angus In the northeastern part of Scotland Northern Scotland, although in a more northern latitude than the United States , has a more uniform temperature throughout the year. The Gulf Steam tempers the climate in the winter, and the summers remain cooler than weather commonly experienced in the United States. Origin There are three distinct and well-defined breeds of polled cattle in the United Kingdom. These breeds are the Aberdeen-Angus, the Galloway , and the red polled Norfolk and Suffolk breed that is found in England . Polled cattle apparently existed in Scotland before recorded history because the likeness of such cattle is found in prehistoric carvings of Aberdeen and Angus. Historians state that there were hornless cattle in Siberia centuries earlier. A hornless race of cattle was depicted in Egypt by sculptors and painters of that ancient civilization. Some historians feel that the Aberdeen-Angus breed and the other Scottish breeds sprang from the aboriginal cattle of the country and that the breeds as we find them today are indigenous to the districts in which they are still found. Lincoln Red Lincoln Red cattle have been imported into Australia from the United Kingdom since the early 1900s. The Australian Society was formed in 1971 at which time there were a limited number of purebred Lincoln Red cattle of both sexes in Australia. This nucleus has been expanded by natural mating, artificial insemination using overseas sires and the introduction of a grading-up program. Lincoln Reds are an efficient, early maturing breed. They offer minimum care, are easy calvers and are not prone to sunburn or eye cancer. The breed is a deep red color, may be horned or polled and is reasonably large-framed with a rapid growth rate.
