HISTORY OF LITHUANIA
Lithuania's past is rich and marked by complexity. In the multitude of events, and their uniqueness and effect on neighboring nations, Lithuania can be compared to any large state. Perhaps, this is the reason why Lithuanians hold their history in great esteem. A Lithuanian engaged in an explanation of the present will often digress into historical comparisons and analogies. The legends, wars, battles and political events are intertwined with songs, have found their way into literary works, and have provided the inspiration for movies, plays and art works. Of course, these popular and artistic representations are sometimes hardly different from mythology. But who is to deny that mythology is a part of life?

From ancient times to World War I
The Baltic tribes established themselves on what is presently known as Lithuanian territory during the 7th-2nd centuries BC. Many centuries passed, however, before the name of Lithuania appeared in records for the first time, in AD 1009, in the Annals of Quedlinburg. During the period 1236-63, Duke Mindaugas (Mindowe) united the Lithuanian ethnic lands and established the state of Lithuania, which was able to offer resistance against the eastward expansion of the Teutonic Knights. In 1253, Mindaugas embraced Christianity for political reasons, and accepted the crown from the Pope of Rome. Thus, he became the first and only king in Lithuanian history.

In the early 13 th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was created by Mindaugas, a powerful local duke. By the 14 th century, Mindaugas' successors had unified most of the Lithuanian nation.

Photo by Klaudijus Driskius In 1386, Lithuania and Poland were drawn together by a common enemy Ö the Teutonic Knights Ö and formed a union under the Lithuanian Grand Duke Jogaila, who was crowned king of Poland. They remained separate states until 1569, when the formed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Together with much of Poland, Lithuania fell under Czarist Russian rule in the late 18 th century. The late 19 th century saw the rise of a national revival movement. It focused on the history of the Lithuanian state and Lithuanian language and culture, and began formulating demands for cultural and political rights. World War I gave the Lithuanians an opportunity to regain their independence, which they held from 1918 until 1940. On the National Day of Mourning (June 1) in 1989, at Naujoji Vilnia train station, people remember the mass deportations of Lithuanians to Siberia on June 14

It started again as Lithuanian Scouting in 1918. Scouting prospered until 1940, when occupation forces banned Scouting. In November of 1989, after the fall of communism, Scouting re-emerged in the democratic Lithuania. Lithuania was readmitted into WOSM in 1997. The Scout movement in Lithuania began in 1918, when the first Scout troop was founded in Vilnius by Scouter Kostas Jurgela. In 1922, the first Scout General Assembly united the Lithuanian Scout Movement into the Scout Association of Lithuania. In 1924, the Scout Association of Lithuania was registered as a member of the World Bureau. In 1940, the Soviet occupation of Lithuania resulted in Scouting being banned. In the years to 1945, an exile Scouting movement started in the camps for displaced persons. Many of these people moved t the USA and Australia. The organization was able to continue its work abroad. On April 29, 1989, on the eve of Lithuanian independence, the Scout Movement in Lithuania was re-established and Scouting activity restarted. Regular contacts were established and maintained with WOSM.

The earliest evidence of inhabitants in present-day Lithuania dates back to 10 000 BC. Between 3 000-2 000 BC the cord-ware culture people spread over a vast region of Eastern Europe between the Baltic Sea and the Vistula River in the west and the Moscow-Kursk line in the east. Merging with the indigenous population they gave rise to the Balts a distinct Indo-European ethnic group whose descendants are the present-day Lithuanian and Latvian nations and the now extinct Prussians. The first written mention of Lithuania occurs in 1009 AD although many centuries earlier the Roman historian Tacitus referred to the Lithuanians as excellent farmers. Spurred by the expansion into the Baltic lands of the Germanic monastic military orders (the Order of the Knights of the Sword and the Teutonic Order) Duke Mindaugas united the lands inhabited by the Lithuanians the Samogitians Yotvingians and Couranians into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in the 1230s and 40s. In 1251 Mindaugas adopted Catholicism and was crowned King of Lithuania on July 6 1253; a decade later civil war erupted upon his assassination until a ruler named Vitenis defeated the Teutonic Knights and restored order. Lithuania's independence under the union with Poland was restored by Grand Duke Vytautas. During his rule (1392-1430) the GDL turned into one of the largest states in Europe encompassing present-day Belarus most of Ukraine and the Smolensk region of western Russia. Led by Jogaila and Vytautas the united Polish-Lithuanian army defeated the Teutonic Order in the Battle of Tannenberg (Gruenwald or Zalgiras) in 1410 terminating the medieval Germanic drive eastward.
