Description
Opening this museum was the life-long dream of proprietor Stanley Balzekas, which is, in-and-of-itself, cuter than a sack of kittens. According to the museum's Web site, the dream was fulfilled in 1966 when he opened the museum next to his auto dealership on Archer Avenue. Eventually, the museum outgrew the original two-flat location and Balzekas moved it to its current location. Inside is his personal collection of Lithuanian art, as well as armor and rare maps that have been donated over the years. Joining the main exhibit, "Lithuania Through Out the Ages" are a language education department, collections of folk art and coins, tokens and medals, a state-of-the-art audio-visual center and a gift shop. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. (J. Tyson)

The life-long dream of Stanley Balzekas, Jr., to preserve for posterity the wealth of material pertaining to Lithuania's history and culture, was realized when he opened the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in a "two-flat" building next to his auto dealership on Archer Avenue in Chicago on June 22, 1966. His personal collection of art, armor and rare maps was donated and placed on display. Still the president of the museum's board of directors, Stanley Balzekas has seen his museum grow to a major repository of publications, cultural artifacts, and arts not only of Lithuania, but also of the Lithuanian immigrants to the United States and the generations that followed them. The Museum quickly outgrew the available space on Archer Avenue and moved to its present location on Pulaski Road in 1986.
Departments include the Museum's main exhibit "Lithuania Through the Ages, which portrays the development of Lithuanian history and culture from prehistory to the present; fine artwork by Lithuanian and Lithuanian-American artists; a collection of more than 200 antiquariun (16th to 19th centuries) and 700 modern maps of Lithuania and Eastern Europe and atlases; the Numismatic Collection of Lithuanian coins, currencies, tokens, medals, military orders and decorations in the United States; the Children's Museum of Immigrant History; and much more.

Centuries of Change
Focus:
Political causes and cultural consequences of Lithuania's shifting borders.
Resources:
Background:
Lithuania's history is one of turbulance. Since the 1100s when Lithuania's peoples united under its first great ruler, Mindaugas, and until its present independence, Lithuania has survived numerous occupations and border changes. (See "Information for Teachers" for detailed historical information). Lithuania was a major power during the Middle Ages but was partitioned between Russia and Prussia in the 18th century. In 1918, Lithuania became an independent country, but after Soviet troops occupied it in 1940, it was proclaimed the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. On March 11, 1990, the Lithuanian parliment issued a declaration of independece and voted to have Lithuania secede from the Soviet Union. Independence was recognized in September 1991 after the failed coup against the Soviet regime in Moscow. Centuries of political struggle have united the Lithuanian people in resisting interference with their language, songs, religion and values. Changes to the language have been most strongly resisted. Lithuania has, however, assimilated some aspects of the cultures which have occupied its borders.
Activities:
1. Review the reading, "Lithuanian Timeline." Draw students' attention to the way political changes often resulted in cultural changes. Have students somplete the worksheet, "Centuries of Change," and discuss the responses as a class. Following are questions for further discussion:

Chicago's place in Lithuanian history rests on a broad base. Chicago Lithuanians played major roles in almost every stage of Lithuania's modern history as they struggled with the contradictions of assimilating into American culture while maintaining their ethnic identity. Lithuanian immigrants began to come to the United States in significant numbers in the late nineteenth century when their homeland was still a part of the Russian empire. The majority of the first arrivals could not read or write. Most thought of making some money and then returning home, and therefore displayed little interest in buying land. Instead they sought work in mines and cities. After 1900 they came to Chicago in increasing numbers, settling first in Bridgeport and then developing the Marquette Park ( Chicago Lawn ) area. Many found work in the stockyards. Census figures for this period are unreliable in judging ethnicity, but Lithuanians usually claim that Chicago had about 50,000 of their conationals by 1914, making it the largest urban settlement of Lithuanians in the world.

Lessons rendered in alternate character sets are available via links ( Romanized and Unicode 2 ) in the upper-left margin, and near the bottom of this page. Origin and Geographical Location The term 'Baltic' as a common name for Latvian, Lithuanian, and Old Prussian was first used by the German linguist Ferdinand Nesselman in 1845. This name was derived from the Baltic Sea. Lithuanian belongs to the Indo-European family, and is descended from the East Baltic branch. Only Lithuanian and Latvian have survived from this large family. The Baltic, the Slavic, and the Germanic languages have many common traits; there are even more similarities among the Baltic and Slavic languages. These similarities have given rise to various theories: some researchers claim there was a common Balto-Slavic stage after the break-up of the Proto-Indo-European, others consider them to have resulted from convergence. Hydronimical and archaeological data show that a large part of northeastern Europe, approximately from Moscow to Berlin including the northen part of the Dniepr Basin, was Baltic-speaking territory during the 1st millennia B.C. and A.D. Slavs entered this area later. This territory was covered by near-impenetrable forests and was far from the major migration and more important trade routes. These factors facilitated the preservation of an extremely archaic language.

http://www.crvp.org/book/Series04/IVA-17/chapter_xii.htm
CHAPTER XII TWO EXISTENTIALISTS: ANTANAS MACEINA AND JUOZAS GIRNIUS RUTA TUMENAITE The epigraph of this essay could be the words of a present day Lithuanian philosopher, Tomas Sodeika, who has described Lithuanian philosophy as follows: "Someone has said that Lithuania is not a nation of philosophers. Perhaps that is true. We do not have or would hardly have thinkers whose works would be translated into other languages; who would become the subjects of dissertations, studies and monographs for the investigators of other nations; or who would be quoted from one book to another." This could provide a grist for understanding of the whole situation of the Lithuanian philosophy — of earlier years, as well as of present times. Historical destiny has placed Lithuania in an area which had always been immensely sensible to almost all the changes and revolutions which took place all around it. This sensibility was of a particular character, however, for it lies in the marginal situation of Lithuanian culture from the perspective of the Western world. All the major political, historical and cultural events of the world touch Lithuania but only after some period of time. The phenomena do take place in Lithuania, but after a lengthy period of time and with characteristic modifications. What was the situation in education in those days? From 1864 until 1905 the Lithuanian language was suppressed by the Czarist rule; it was practically removed from public life and was spoken mostly among the rural inhabitants. There were no Lithuanian academics. Those who sought higher education could choose either Russia with its universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev or Charkov, or to go to Western Europe. But there was the problem of means for education. Without a state, there were no official institutions which could provide financial assistance. The only institution which could offer help was the Catholic Church. It granted scholarships, but only for members of the Church, and for the major Catholic centers of Western Europe — the universities of Freiburg (Switzerland) and Louvain (Belgium). The end of the 19th century marked a rapid renaissance and the prosperity of neo-Thomism after the encyclical of the Pope Leo XIII

FOLK ART INTRODUCTION
Traditional classic Lithuanian folk art is country person's creative work, blossomed out in varied forms and answering life, work and spiritual needs, taking part in rituals, traditions, economic activity, including all life spheres. In the second half of the 20 th century, after historical changes, unstable public and economic structures, folk creative work breaks away more from the country side. A large number of today's folk artists - city and town inhabitants and their creative work, handicrafts, join into city life, culture and art process. Therefore it is more or less usual that today's folk creative works, are perceived as work of persons without higher academic studies and merging one way or another with folk art traditions and extending them.
In every branch of folk art in the second half of the 20th century, there have been specific changes in the content of works of art, design, color, form, technology, function and in other spheres. A portion of these changes was due to objective causes - changes in work and living conditions, factory production which changed traditional handicrafts. Part of these changes was due to conditions of Soviet occupation of the country. Some of the works, like applied wood carvings ( spindles, towel holders, wooden instruments for beating linen and others ), even though they lost their practical usage, they remained as souvenirs, interior decorative items. Regardless, during Soviet years, folk articles were perceived as reflection and witness of national identity.
