The name of Lithuania was first mentioned in the Quedlinburg Annals in 1009. Under Grand Duke Mindaugas, who is recognized as the founder of Lithuania, and under the rule of Grand Duke Gediminas, the territory was extended during the 14th century southwards to take in Minsk and later as far as the Black Sea. This power enabled Lithuania to withstand the advance of the Teutonic Knights and to reach, together with Poland, the decisive victory at the Zalgiris (Tannenberg) battle in 1410. The capital of the new state was therefore established at Kaunas. The Lithuanian constitution promulgated in 1922 declared Lithuania to be a parliamentary republic with the

KAUNAS - THE CRADLE OF LITHUANIAN CULTURE AND TRADITION Lithuania's second largest city, Kaunas, is situated at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, closer to what would be Lithuania's geographical centre. The city is an important industrial and cultural centre with an approximate population of 415,000. 16th-17th Century Residential Houses. A Historic City The earliest known references to Kaunas appear in records dating from 1361. The city's old town, picturesquely dominating the junction of two rivers, is a fascinating combination of archaeology, architecture and history. Here one finds the remains of a castle dating back to the 13th to 16th centuries standing as evidence of the ancient battles between Lithuania and the knights of the Teutonic Order. Numerous other
buildings crowd together in a stimulating mixture of the arts and architecture of different eras. The 15th century produced the church of Vytautas, Saint George's church and the reconstructed Cathedral. City Hall, dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, is surrounded by charming old houses; the Perkûnas (Thunder) House dates back to the 15th century. Some of the city's structures are recognized as representing a distinct variation of the Northern European Renaissance style, notably the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Masalskis Manor complex (16th to 18th century). The Paþaislis Monastery The Baroque Era The most outstanding baroque monument is the Paþaislis monastery, a collection of buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. This is among the most lovely of examples of ecclesiastical architecture in Northern Europe, unified architecturally by its hexagonal design and a majestic cupola, with its faðade proportioned according to the principles of Italian baroque, and its interior decorated with subtly coloured frescoes and statues.

LITHUANIAN CULTURE
They say that culture is the mainstay of the survival of Lithuania. The state, which was powerful during the Middle Ages but later weakened, was reborn with the same name in the 20th century, solely thanks to the fact that its main ethnic group, the Lithuanians, had managed to preserve their national identity, in other words their culture, language, literature, art and traditions. Lithuanian ethnic customs and traditions are reflected through rural architecture, clothing, dances, songs, legends and tales. The unique method of Lithuanian singing, the sutartine , is known all over the world. The unique tradition of a national song festival, which takes place every five years, is alive in Lithuania. The festival brings together hundreds of thousands of performers and listeners. The folklore festivals keep gaining in popularity every year. The international folklore festival, Baltica, is also well known. A carnival-type religious holiday, Uzgavenes (Shrove Tuesday), which marks the start of Lent (40 days before Easter), found its way to the cities from the villages and became a big occasion for children. Since the 14th century, the 24th of June has been celebrated in observance of the Feast of St John, or Rasa Day. Lithuanian arts became particularly abundant under the conditions of the independent state, between the two world wars. Lithuanian stained-glass art, paintings and sculpture may be ascribed to the most outstanding manifestations of that period. Religious art is an important part of Lithuanian art, too. Most examples of this art have survived within churches of all styles and epochs. Another aspect of religious art can be found in the Lithuanian countryside tradition. Carved wayside crosses and statuettes of Christian saints of wood, most frequently wooden (oak), still stand in the central regions of Lithuania, in the open air, adorning the landscape.

In 51 of these buildings an interior exposition with the equipment characteristic to some particular period is arranged - furniture, cloths, kitchen articles, working tools. In some buildings the process of some kind of work is demonstrated: making pots of clay, processing of the amber, wood, metal, weaving etc. A separate sector is devoted to the memory of the exile and torture of the Lithuanian people - wigwam, exile carriage, and monuments.

Introduction to Culture
Every national or racial group possesses both good and bad traits manifested not only in the group's individual members but as a quality common to the group as a whole. This has been noted by both scholars and ordinary people as they come into daily contact with neighbors of a particular nationality or race. These observations, somewhat elaborated upon and exaggerated, form the basis of anecdotes about one nation's foolishness, another's stinginess, a third's drunkenness and so forth. Alongside negative anecdotes, opinions are formed about the diligence, neatness, honesty and dignity of certain nationalities. Regardless of whether we like or dislike being Lithuanian, we cannot change our national origin for it has been shaped over thousands of years by the nation's way of life, environment, customs and traditions. This remains ingrained in our souls even when we intentionally or unintentionally separate ourselves from our national group.
We have all inherited our nation's character. It cannot be wiped out either by the culture of the country where we reside, by our way of life or by our surroundings. Americans appear to understand this already and it is thus very common here to seek "one's roots," researching the nationality, origins, customs and traditions one's parents, grandparents and great-grandparents brought to this country so many years ago. Nearly every American can identify the nationality of his father, mother, grandfather and grandmother. This helps to explain why a particular person has a tendency toward thrift, anger, gossip, business, revenge and the like. Psychologists maintain that such knowledge of one's "roots" enables an individual to understand himself better, accept mood swings and deal more successfully with life's hardships.

LITERATURE
Lithuanian literature, literary works in the Lithuanian language . In contrast to other European languages, Lithuanian was late in coming into literary usage, not until early in the 16th century. In 1962 a text was discovered at Vilnius and authenticated as dating from the early 16th century; it appeared to be a copy of an even earlier work. This version of two Christian prayers and a statement of faith represents the earliest example of written Lithuanian. Previously a catechism printed at Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia) in 1547 was thought to be the earliest. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Lithuanian literature was mostly religious. The 18th century witnessed a modest increase in secular publications, including dictionaries. The first notable name in Lithuanian literature is that of Christian Donalitius, a poet whose masterful work Metai (The Seasons, printed in 1818), depicts in lyrical hexameter the passage of a year in a Lithuanian village. In the first half of the 19th century, the University of Vilnius was the center of a movement promoting the language, history, and folklore of Lithuania. A leader of this group was Simanas Daukantas, a romanticist and historian. In 1863, troubled by Lithuanian nationalist uprisings, the Russian czar proclaimed a 40-year ban on the printing of the

Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis: A Life
Alfred Erich Senn Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis, known in his family as "Kastukas", was born on September 22 (new style), 1875, in Var na, Lithuania, in what was then the Kaunas province of the Russian Empire. His father, Konstantinas iurlionis, was a church organist; in his time the organ had been almost the only instrument with which one could hope to become a professional musician and, in any case, he had been fascinated by the organ's capacity to 'sing' in several voices at the same time. iurlionis mother, Adel Radmanait , had met his father when she, a Calvinist, had visited a Catholic church and had been struck by both the sound of the organ and the appearance of the organist. In 1878 the family moved to Druskininkai, a resort town in the Gardinas province. iurlionis' parents Life was difficult for the family. iurlionis was the first of ten children born to the couple; nine survived into adulthood. Soon after their arrival in Druskininkai, his father succumbed to wanderlust and disappeared; he apparently went off to Siberia. His mother had to fend for herself for about a year, and when her husband returned, she rejoined him, though hesitantly. Despite this inauspicious beginning, the family held together and grew ever closer with the years. To supplement the salary of ten rubles per month he received as a church organist, his father copied official documents for local people - he knew Russian well and had excellent handwriting - while his mother sewed and gave private lessons.

Lithuania - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman For the last hundred years, much of Lithuania's culture has been in hiding. Different countries occupied Lithuania during that time. They tried to change some or all of the traditions and culture of Lithuania. But Lithuanians did not give up their culture. Today, Lithuanians enjoy the freedom to practice their own unique ways.
Part of Lithuanian culture's survival can be found in any average Lithuanian. Lithuanians are thought of as very kind and outgoing people. Generally, Lithuanians place more importance on emotion than on thought. To their neighbors, this sometimes makes Lithuanians seem too carefree. Partly because emotion is so important, Lithuanians have fought hard for the right to express themselves.
In the middle of the 20th century, the Soviet Union took control of Lithuania. They outlawed Lithuanian language, schools, and churches. The Soviet Union made it illegal to buy or sell books in the Lithuanian language. But some native Lithuanians lived outside the country. They printed books and magazines in Lithuanian and brought them to Lithuania.

The Ministry of Culture was established in 1994, when the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture was divided into two ministries. The administration of the cultural affairs of Lithuania is on two levels; central (the Ministry of Culture) and local (the districts and municipalities). The main task of the Ministry is to ensure the historical continuation of Lithuanian culture and to create conditions for its development and expression. The Ministry maintains national and some regional institutions: the National Philharmonic Society, Lithuanian Folk Cultural Centre, the National M.Mazvydas Library, 12 state theatres and three national museums. A Training Centre for Cultural Workers has been established for improving the professional skills of cultural workers. There are several consultative institutions: the Board of Culture and Art, the College of Culture Self-Government and expert commissions in each section of the Ministry. Some independent institutions are administered by the Ministry, including: the Committee of National Awards for Culture and Art and the National UNESCO Commission. The Monument Protection Department is responsible for cultural heritage.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Little Lithuania, Chicago United States , is the largest Lithuanian community outside Lithuania , referred to by many Lithuanian-Americans as the second capital of Lithuania. Lithuanian-Americans from Chicago have had a huge effect on both American and Lithuanian politics. Lithuanians have been arriving in America since , when Lithuania declared its independence from Imperial Russia . It should be noted that, although this is the first official record, Lithuanians had been arriving earlier; however, they were listed as Russian citizens. This is compounded by the fact that, prior to Lithuanian Independence, most if not all official documents were written in Russian Polish , or German . Thousands of Lithuanians have since moved to Chicago, providing a good source of labor for the growing city. Little Lithuania is the center of Lithuanian culture in America. It houses the only museum about Lithuania in America (the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture), which has a huge wealth of knowledge on Lithuania and Lithuanian culture. It has a number of Lithuanian restaurants, bookstores, and other shops. Even the current President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus , was a former resident of the Chicago area. Chicago is also the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania, and still has close ties to what is still affectionately called the Motherland.
