Country Info Lithuania Introduction Lithuania General Data Lithuania Maps Lithuania Culture ... Lithuania Time and Date Lithuania Culture Back to Top Like Latvian and Old Prussian, the Lithuanian language belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. The size of the territory in which Lithuanian was spoken shrank considerably through the ages. Today it is roughly coterminous with the boundaries of Lithuania except for some areas of Lithuanian speakers in Poland and Belarus, and except for the diaspora living in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Latin America, Australia, and even Siberia. The movie industry was accomplished in the late 1940s. Lithuanian filmmakers released four full-length films in 1989 and five in 1990; they also released twenty-eight short films, twenty-four newsreels, and four documentaries. Artistic photography has roots that are older than the Soviet regime in Lithuania.Sports are also a prevalent national pastime. Lithuania's most popular game is basketball, and a few Lithuanians play professionally in the United States and in European countries. Lithuania's individual athletes have won Olympic medals and routinely compete in European events.

Culture
There exists a sound reason for saying that culture is the mainstay of the survival of Lithuania. The state, powerful during the Middle Ages and later weakened, was reborn with the same name in the 20th century, solely thanks to the fact that its main ethnic group, the Lithuanians, had managed to preserve their national identity, in other words their culture, language, literature, art and traditions. From this identity sprouted all the new forms of creativity, having assimilated the modernism of the 20th century and current post-modernism. The national culture and higher forms of art created on the foundation it provided, expanded and were consolidated during the interval between the two world wars. During the years of Soviet occupation, culture became a shelter of spiritual resistance. Culture assisted Lithuanians in protecting their identity. Ethnic culture was maintained and professional artistic culture was created cleverly and selflessly and often through the use of Soviet institutions. The new rebirth which commenced in 1988 was capable of delivering victory also because all of the creative forces of the nation had merged. In May 1990, immediately following the declaration of independence, the largest Cultural Congress in the history of Lithuania assembled in Vilnius. Several thousand delegates debated the status of culture and discussed the tasks the nation would encounter during the 21st century.

Estonia Latvia Lithuania Culture
I have noticed that they ignore completely what I am saying no matter how I say it, or what I do... I am good at sign language.
Eye contact is not made and they miss or are not able to communicate. These culture have a very poor ability to deal with direct comments. I am having a great time saying,
"Hello, how are you today?"
It drive these three countries crazy and I think nobody ever says hello.
I went into this grocery store, held up my ATM or Bank Card and made motions of putting this into the machine. They finally shake their head and say no, I go out and start to walk further down the street.
This Bank Machine is inside their store and pointed out, just goes to show you that you really need to be careful when asking people for help. The receptionist at the Hostel said there was none in the old town and I needed to go the miles back to the bus station to find a Bank Machine. This machine is right down the hill from the Hostel.

CULTURE In spite of such modern influences as television and radio, Lithuanian folklore continues to hand down a rich and original heritage from generation to generation. Lithuanian songs and a remarkable collection of fairy tales, legends, proverbs, and aphorisms have their roots deep in a language and culture that are among the oldest in Europe. Lithuanian folk art is mainly embodied in ceramics, leatherwork, wood carving, and textiles; its colouring (which tends to avoid gaudiness) and its original geometric or floral patterns are characteristic features. The Vilnius drawing school, founded in 1866, has had a strong influence on the nation's fine-arts traditions, and the composer and painter Mikalojus Ciurlionis (d. 1911) also had a considerable influence on contemporary forms. During the Soviet period, a realistic note was introduced into sculpture and painting, and Lithuanian drawing, noted for the use of natural colour and a highly refined technique, has won international acclaim. Architecture has been affected by a rich heritage in monuments and old buildings and by styles, ranging from the Gothic to the Neoclassical, that have acquired a distinctive local character.

Pre-lithuanian period ( till about the end of 10th century AC).
Lithuanian nation rose in centuries AC from Baltic nations group. Balts , the ancestors of Lithuanians and Latvians , had arrived to territories between Dnepr Daugava rivers and the Baltic sea from hypothetic Indo-European original homeland. Many scientists date this arrival to 3 millenary BC We may only suppose, that Balts, which had been arrived with the main wave of Indo-Europeans, were not included in forming processes or later Indo-European nations in South and Western Europe . Balts stayed away from this development, and their culture preserved primeval features of Indo-European culture for long time. When, later, contacts with new-formed European nations increased, differences between this primary (not without some evolutionary changes, anyway) culture and culture of new Indo-European nations in Europe were on such level, that closer cultural interchange was quite impossible. This allowed to preserve cultural differences from last Europe and caused isolation (or, maybe, self-isolation) of Balts. After Goths domination times in Europe, we can find vestiges of Balts in more restricted territory between
