Literature Review A critical literature review within a specific field or interest of research is one of the most essential, but also complex activities in the process of research. In order to proceed a more productive literature review, it is recommendable for reviewers to design a frame that consists of their research questions or purpose of the review. Thus, the internalized frame of research questions needs to be kept through the whole process of selecting resources, reading and writing about previous research studies chosen.

http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~fms/about.html
Details about the Major in Film and Media Studies As our national and international cultures become increasingly dominated by visual culture, we acknowledge the need to study those forms which provide our chief sources of entertainment and information. This need speaks to our desire to become critical viewers, knowledgable in the history of the most popular art forms of our century and possessing the analytical skills to understand and interpret visual forms of expression. The undergraduate major in film and media studies requires the rigorous study of history and aesthetics in an attempt to understand the creative force of an individual art work, its relation to other artistic production, and its place in culture. Furthermore, because film and media creations are most often produced within an industrial context, the student of film and media must also study industrial and business practices. Students who gain skills in writing and analysis, as they should in any rigorous course of study in the humanities, can work in many professions, such as journalism and publishing, business, law, medicine, social work, and teaching. Film and media majors who seek careers in the entertainment and information industries will certainly gain an intellectual perspective on these forms that should enhance their professional lives. But this major will also benefit any student looking at other possible professions because it shares the aim of a liberal arts curriculum to train students in rigorous analytical thinking and provide them with historical knowledge.

Introduction Taking an empirical perspective, this article investigates how a sample of Brazilian undergraduates view literature. Our central hypothesis is that novices emphasize aspects of the literary experience that differ from those most valued by their tutors or in their textbooks. Our aim is to find out precisely what aspects students emphasize in order to provide a profile of novices' attitudes to literature. Questions of literary value are deliberately avoided here because, for many obvious reasons, academics and students have different perceptions of textual quality. Studies on students' interpretations have been widely known, since, for instance, I. A. Richards published Practical Criticism and Louise Rosenblatt advanced the need to develop the fruition of individual literary experience. Thus far, however, there have been no studies to our knowledge that focus on what students actually say about what literature is or what it does.

" The first statement could come from any one of the many critiques of English classes in general, particularly classes incorporating young adult literature. The second could come from a student addressing an at-risk student in a special freshman English class. Whether a general attack on the "dumbing down" of the curriculum or a personal judgment of someone's intellect, the instructional strategy of having at-risk students read young adult literature and respond through art would be looked upon by many as watering down curriculum for kids who couldn't handle anything tougher. However, as one of our students commented, "They [other students and teachers] think we're stupid, but we're not." We also believe these students are not lacking in intelligence, and so we challenged them with Julius Eester's excellent adaptation of Othello, encouraging them to pose questions, make hypotheses, and argue interpretations to critique not only the world of the text, but also the world around them. We wanted the students to experience the rewards of thoughtful and engaged reading of literature as we addressed significant themes and issues. We wanted the students to know they were indeed capable of higher-level thinking sometimes thought to be the exclusive territory of those labeled gifted. In short, we wanted to help them build critical literacy skills and confidence through reading young adult literature and responding through music, visual art, and poetry writing.

Abstract
Students are introduced to South African apartheid and read two selections that were inspired by this oppressive system. They examine the main idea, supporting points, and emotional language from a selection by Nelson Mandela and identify literary conventions that help to build a theme in one of Nadine Gordimer's short stories. Students write a final reflection about the power of language and literature to fight oppression.

For many years we have been developing probewareprobes, sensors, interfaces, supporting software, and related curricula for classroom lab activities. However, we have never seen anything like the burst of creativity that is currently driving innovation in this area. Eventually, these new developments will drive down the costs, increase the usability, and greatly improve the educational impact of probeware. http://www.concord.org/newsletter/2002winter/probeware.html

Eliot Feld is the founder of Ballet Tech, the first public school in America to train ballet dancers. The book focuses on the experiences of the students: how they are selected, the discipline and practice involved in class and rehearsals and finally the performance. The young people are given a voice throughout the book, which is illustrated by beautifully lit color and black-and-white photographs of the racially diverse students.
The Little Capoeira Book , by Nestor Capoeira and Alex Ladd. (North Atlantic Books, 1995, 147 pages.) The authors also offer an explanation of the different theories on how capoeira started and what its original purposes were.

Assessing Diversity Courses: Tips and Tools
Jack Meacham, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and Chair, Department of Psychology, State University of New York at Buffalo Guiding principles for assessing diversity courses are, in general, the same principles that should guide assessment of any course. It is important to consider before the first day of class how one will know if one is reaching the goals for student learning one has set. Articulating Learning Goals As in any effective course assessment, before beginning to teach a course on diversity, one should articulate one's goals for student learning. This record serves as a reminder to keep one on track during the semester, and as a point of comparison when new goals emerge as a result of interactions with students. It is also good practice to list these goals on the course syllabus. This clarification of expectations for student learning helps both students and the teacher stay focused on course-relevant topics throughout the term. Goals for student learning should be limited in scope as well as appropriate for the students' learning, not just the teacher's interests. http://community.middlebury.edu/~harris/amlit.html
ENGLISH AND AM-LIT. IN THE ELECTRONIC WORLD
College study of English and American literature is such a basic part of our Liberal Arts tradition, that we might easily accept it as it stands and not inquire further about its aims and methods. But there are problems, which I would like to summarize briefly as follows: a) Most of what is being intensively "studied" originally appeared on the book publishing market as pleasure reading of one sort or another. People bought and read copies of Sterne, Dickens, Faulkner and Steinbeck because they enjoyed reading, not because they wanted to study them. The college study of books shifts the emphasis and changes the meaning of Literature, it even re-orients the way we think about literature. b) The study of Literature is basically "commentative", s it talks about the nuances of meaning, about plot development and about subjective reactions to what is read. In a typical literature course, this gives students a good chance to develop their conversational skills around the seminar table, and these are skills which will be useful later in life without question. The teacher can merely "host" the discussion and often prefers to let the students take the lead in discussion. Some students might even wonder if the teacher is needed there at all, he or she is so quiet and unobtrusive at times. c) Serious study implies tools, techniques and analytical skills, as we see used in the Social Science and in the Physical Sciences. So the study of science is intrinsically very different from the nature of literary studies. This is not entirely because of the difference of the material being studied, but it can be, I suggest, a difference in both approach and technique. Literary studies tend to be initally commentative, drawing collaterial material from a wide range of information, but they do not have a basic analytical structure and hence can be essentially "techniqueless".
