Preparing Scholarly Reviews of the Literature: A Webtorial This web site will teach you how to use research literature from the social sciences in a scholarly and professional manner. It is intended for masters and doctoral degree students in all the social sciences, although particular emphasis is given to the fields addressed by The George Washington University's Graduate School of Education and Human Development. This site covers:
  • Searching for research literature efficiently, finding what you need quickly, finding the full text online when available, and avoiding an avalanche of irrelevant references. Hint Your favorite search engine will not find most of the scholarly literature! Assessing individual reports of research literature to determine whether their findings and conclusions should be relied upon or are likely to be misleading. Hint : Some of the research literature on almost every topic is misleading or trivial. Integrating the various studies on a topic to make the best assessments of what is known about the topic, to identify promising future research, to improve conceptual frameworks for research, and to determine the advantages and disadvantages of previously used methodologies. Hint : This isn't easy because the available studies usually exhibit apparent contradictions.

Technology In The Classroom REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE By: Jamshed N. Lam The literature is rich with examples of technology in the classroom. It helps the emergent learner, students with disabilities, students with language disabilities and the gifted child. With the cultural and socioeconomic diversity in our schools today, teaching effectively to these different levels of ability, background, interests, learning styles and modalities is a major challenge. We usually teach to the majority since it is somewhat impractical to try to tailor teaching to each student. Too basic an instruction will help the struggling learner but bore the gifted and visa versa. Thus poorer students are left hanging in their confusion, and the brightest students miss exciting challenges. With computers as tutors, each student has the ability to work at their own pace. Often, students are too confused or embarrassed to ask questions because they don't want to show their ignorance. With individualized computer instruction, students can always immediately request help if something is unclear. Computers help to make it more interactive. They are extremely effective with the struggling learners because they (unlike humans) have unlimited patience. Computers can teach via a multitude of modalities depending on the learning style of the student (Bennett, 2002).

Teaching Critical Thinking Skills Through Literature
An interview with Donna Miller Prentice Hall: What do we mean by critical thinking in the 2000s? How has the focus changed over the years? Donna Miller: Expectations are that a critical thinker not only has the ability to analyze and problem-solve in academic situations, but has the ability to use those thought processes in any situation, including personal and social situations. The word critical is redundant, for all thinking is critical. PH: Critical thinking experts tell us that knowledge is stored in our memories in interrelated knowledge structures they call schemata. That being so, how important is it to activate prior knowledge and personal experience before requiring students to interpret a new text? DM: Our human minds, from our infancy onward, automatically search for familiar ground when encountering the unfamiliar. We are looking for links for comprehending the unknown. Educators can help students make those connections by providing activities that lead up to a new learning experience that may be difficult to comprehend independently.

    Planning and Resources
    Teaching Grammar Using Literature
by Edward R. Levy, Ph.D. Since the mid-twentieth century, numerous studies have been undertaken to investigate whether formal instruction in English grammar affects the level and quality of student writing skills, and in what ways. The results of these studies are all too familiar: There is little, if any, correlation between success in writing and formal grammatical instruction. Put another way, students who are good at grammatical analysis and the mechanics of written English quite often do not write well. Contrarily, those who write easily and well often show little or no skill in analyzing grammatical relationships between parts of a sentence.
There is some comfort in the realization that the students who fall into the latter category are not alone. Some of the greatest writers have known little, if anything, about the grammar of the language in which they wrote. Yet the quality of their writing is undeniable. (Remember also that writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden, and Pope, although they may have studied Latin, had no formal instruction in English grammar. In fact, before the eighteenth century no written treatises on English grammar existed.) Thus, while grammar is an important tool for the study and analysis of language, the ability to analyze linguistic structure is not a requisite for developing skill in the use of them. (This sort of disparity is found not only in the realm of language. John Stuart Mill once observed that though he knew what would make him happy, that knowledge did not itself produce happiness. Happiness was beyond analysis. So is writing skill.)

Why is the land and nature a common subject of poetry and art?
What do these and related forms of artistic expression tell us about ourselves and our relationship to the earth and one another?
Divide the class into pairs and share responses. Use these responses as the basis for a whole class discussion.

Christian Unions Literature The literature we have chosen to recommend in the lists below is limited to stuff which aims primarily to promote missions awareness generally rather than to promote the publishing agency. There is much other literature of a more mission-specific nature which is of immense value and which you can get from the agencies displaying in the WHEREhouse. For example, OMF's Spam magazine is very thought-provoking for those who are interested in East Asia, and CMS' Mission Mania is a poster-style mag which would enhance a missions notice board. These are only two examples of good mission-specific lit.- have a look at what other agencies have to offer to see what would grab your CU and move them towards missions. Leaflets

LESSON PLANS FOR AGES 12-14 IN LANGUAGE/LITERATURE
The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig Purpose
This cluster of lessons revolves around the novel The Endless Steppe , the autobiographical account of the author's 5-year exile in Siberia during her late childhood. The story of Esther is about hardship, deprivation, injustice; but above all, it is about how a child's zest for life takes her through these tribulations, and helps her to become part of her new community.
    LESSONS 1 and 2
    Preparation
A class set of The Endless Steppe is needed.
    Procedure
For the necessary entry behaviour, tell the students that this story begins in Poland, during the period of the Second World War. At the beginning of World War II, Germany and Russia agreed not to attack one another. In September 1939, Poland was first invaded by the Germans, and then by the Russians. Up to a million Poles were deported, many to Siberia, including the author and her family.
To begin the lesson, it is suggested that the teacher reads aloud from the beginning of chapter 1 until halfway down page 4, stopping just after the sentence "But in 1939 Hilter's armies marched on Poland". Students are then given class time to finish the chapter.
    Discussion questions
  • a) How would you describe Esther's childhood in Vilna? Give examples of her childhood memories.

It sounds deceptively simple, but many of today's overworked teachers in grades 4-6 could use a book such as Literature Circles: Tools and Techniques to Inspire Reading Groups to help them to implement literature circles as a language arts strategy. Rogers and Leochko are especially credible authors as they have made these techniques work in inner city schools where the trials and tribulations of teaching can sometimes overwhelm the best intentions. Teachers reading their book will likely be inspired to try this technique. Literature Circles: Tools and Techniques to Inspire Reading Groups Literature Circles: Tools and Techniques to Inspire Reading Groups will assist teachers to get started with this approach in upper elementary classrooms through the use of narrative texts.
