Elementary Themes Literature Circles Literature Circles A Literature Circle is a student centered reading activity for a group of 4-6 students at any grade level. Each member of a circle is assigned a role which helps guide the group in a discussion of the title they are all reading. Literature Circles provide an opportunity for students to control their own learning; to share thoughts, concerns and their understanding of the events of the novel. These Web sites explain literature circles, identify the role of each member of the group and guide the teacher in how to implement the technique in the classroom.

    • In the envisionment-building classroom, assessment is an on-going process that:
      • focuses on how students are thinking and how they are growing as thinkers; focuses on ways students develop interpretations of texts; focuses on the expression of multiple perspectives about texts; and focuses on ways of going beyond the text to ways the text connects with other texts and with students' lives.
Students in envisionment classrooms participate in self-reflection and self-assessment. Assessment helps teachers and students gauge how and what students are learning and thinking. Assessment can help teachers shape timely instructional strategies targeted to immediate student needs.

    Quick Writes

Quick writes have many names (journal jottings, freewriting) and multiple uses. Briefly, quick writes afford students the opportunity to pause momentarily during reading or discussion and record their thoughts and feelings in writing. Teachers can then ask students to share their writings, confident that every member of the group has had the opportunity to grapple with the issue at hand and has something to offer. Responding Visually to Literature
Many language arts teachers have come intuitively to use visual activities to support their literature instruction. Non-verbal activities provide an opportunity for students to develop and display their growing understanding and enjoyment of the literature in informal ways as they develop visual representations of their thinking.

LEARNING AND TEACHING SUPPORT The following examples demonstrate how mobile devices can be used to support learning-related activities for students, teachers and administrators. Helping university students organise their own learning Researchers at the University of Birmingham, UK, developed and trialled a mobile learning organiser, based on a wirelessly-enabled Pocket PC, with Masters level students in 2002-2003, to determine the key tools necessary for such a learning device (Holme and Sharples 2002; Sharples et al 2003; Corlett et al 2004). The Student Learning Organiser is an integrated suite of software tools developed at the University of Birmingham. The ‘Time Manager’ tool included the ability to create, delete and view timetable events and deadlines, while the ‘Course Manager’ tool allowed students to wirelessly download course material packages, created by a complementary desktop tool, in Microsoft Reader format. A one-year trial was conducted with 17 MSc students in the Department of Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering. Each student was given a Compaq iPAQ 3760 Pocket PC 2002 handheld with 64MB of memory. As devices with integrated wireless capabilities were not available at the time, it was necessary to provide each student with an expansion sleeve and an 802.11b wireless network card. In addition to the Student Learning Organiser tools, the students had access to cut-down versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer and Media Player, e-mail, instant messaging and two concept mapping tools. The students were encouraged to use the hand-helds for their personal activities and to install additional software as they wished.

using a computer as a ‘mindtool’ to solve a problem and learning how to solve it for oneself are therefore different things problem, planning, and the kind of diagnostic thinking involved in debugging • abilities of formal reasoning and representation eg thinking of all possible combinations, and constructing mathematical models • cognitive styles eg precision, and reflectivity over impulsivity • enthusiasms and tolerances eg persistence, and enthusiasm for meaningful academic engagement. The logic based programming language LOGO has been widely used in schools and widely evaluated. Results seem equivocal. Simon (1987) surveys a number of evaluations to conclude that Papert’s hopes that using LOGO would lead to the emergence of general problem solving skills were ‘pipe dreams’ and ‘technoromanticism’. Underwood and Underwood’s survey of evaluation results is much more positive (1990). Liao and Bright (1991, quoted in Kirkwood, 1998) conducted a meta-analysis of sixty-five classroom based studies into the relationship between computer programming and general cognitive skills, using quantitative comparisons between treatment and control groups. Their main conclusion is that programming can provide a mildly effective approach to developing students’ cognitive skills in a classroom setting.

Response Strategies Using Multimedia Media surrounds today's adolescents. They gather information through television, radio, video, film, and the Internet and use a range of technology tools to communicate with one another. Teachers are increasingly finding that they can encourage students to respond to literature by introducing multimedia tools. Not only do students find this engaging and motivating, but it opens the door to creative expression. For example, students can create presentations using programs such as PowerPoint, go on WebQuests, and construct their own web pages. This section provides information for using multimedia to respond to literature. Select from the menu below: Presentation Tools A presentation slide show is a series of sequential electronic pages that can be seen as a "computer book." It usually includes text, graphics, and animation. The software programs most often used for presentations are KidPix and PowerPoint. The Hyperstudio program, while more complex to use, offers the ability to hyperlink pages. These presentations usually involve a summary and synthesis of students' understanding and thus focus on higher-level thinking skills. After reading a book, teachers may break students into groups, each with a different task to create a multimedia product.

            About Eliminating Physical Barriers
Provide students with broadband access to the Internet and other educational resources without rewiring your school Article Summary
The Internet, e-Learning, and other on-line resources are critical to ensuring every student has access to the best education. However, wiring your schools for student access is expensive and challenging. Retrofitting old schools and keeping up with growth in new schools can be a major problem. Wireless technology helps schools achieve access to computing and networking resources with minimum impact to facilities and budgets. Benefits include:
            • Anywhere, anytime access to e-Learning applications, Internet resources, and collaboration tools for students and staff Flexible, easy network modification and expansion to handle changing student needs and population Building and campus-wide connectivity without the cost and difficulty of running wires
            Challenge
Providing access to computing resources can be a significant challenge for many schools. Schools need to maintain consistent services across both old and new buildings and all students must have access to the same level of computing resources. Older buildings may be difficult to re-wire and wiring temporary facilities may be impractical. Plus managing changes and scaling the network to handle an ever-increasing number of users can be an administrative nightmare. As schools move toward the model of one computer for every student, scalability can become a significant deployment and administrative problem.

About Enabling Education Through Learning Infrastructure
Provide a learning infrastructure with shared resources and collaborative tools supporting the latest educational applications and new revenue programs with an Intelligent Information Network Article Summary
Colleges and universities are facing tough competition from both traditional and new Internet-based educational institutions. To compete, institutions must focus on providing a high quality education environment able to attract the best students and faculty. They must be able to quickly and cost effectively deliver new educational programs to expand their student base and create new revenue opportunities. An intelligent information network can provide the foundation for advanced educational programs and services, creating new revenue opportunities, while improving staff efficiency and productivity, and reducing program delivery costs.
            Challenge
Colleges and universities have tremendous opportunity with expanding demand for educational services. However, success doesn't come easy due to increasing competition from local, national and international sources. Recruiting and retaining the best faculty and students requires providing a comprehensive learning environment with compelling educational programs. Faculty expects the best teaching environment, and the latest in communication, collaboration and productivity tools. Students demand the best possible education using the most current applications and technology, such as digital libraries, rich media and video-on-demand.
