  • 84. Children's Literature: Ian Falconer
Simon Schuster's interview with the author; reviews and awards.
    http://www.childrenslit.com/f_falconer.html
Ian Falconer A conversation with Ian Falconer, creator of Olivia Q: We know that the OLIVIA books are about your niece, but are there any autobiographical parts as well? If so, what?
    A:
Of course. One always draws on one's own experiences as well. I was always a very busy childmaking things. Q: How did you decide to portray OLIVIA as a pig?
    A:
Pigs are very intelligent creatures. They seem to have a more human quality than, say, chickenslike dogs. Q: Were you surprised by OLIVIA's enormous success?
    A:
Yes. I was completely overwhelmed. Q: You have worked in a wide variety of artistic media, including set design, costume design, magazine illustration, and book illustration. What do you like best about creating children's books?
    A:
I've always felt that children's books are for the most part condescending toward children and miss how smart children are. Their little hands and mouths may not be able to articulate what is going on in their sharp little brains. Writing children's books is an opportunity to express this, and it seems to be appreciated by both children and adults. Q: Olivia's family plays a supporting role in both books. Are any of the characters in Olivia's family based on your own family?

    • Olivia, my favorite pig, is still the reigning queen in kids books. She's still going strong, and I hope others have caught the same "Olivia" fever. Here are some of the many many sites that I will be adding to the Guide in the next few weeks. Some of them are new, and some have been around for quite some time but neglected by me. BookMuse Kids' Corner - I really like this site for book discussion guides, and grade-appropriate reading suggestions. About Children's Books - Magazine-style web site with a new feature every week. Other "About Guides" not to be missed: About Young Adult Books About Kids' Books and About Language Arts for Kids Kidsreads and Teenreads - Book reviews of current releases. Novel by Stephen Barnes
Friday, July 26, 2002 4:36 PM EST :: Email Author Message Boards The African American author Stephen Barnes has signed a three book deal with DelRey. Two of the books will be about pre-historic life in Africa, but the third one will be a Star Wars novel. This was reported in an interview with Cinescape . Here's an excerpt:
The third book of Barnes three-book Del Rey deal will be a STAR WARS hardcover novel. It’s a boon to the STAR WARS novel franchise to have an author of such critical magnitude contributing.
“I have long admired the world that Lucas created, and I have some great ideas that I can’t wait to explore for this novel,” says Barnes.
Tight wraps are in place on all specific plot details.

    The Safety of Home Birth
Home birth can be a safe option for 90% of mothers, with appropriate prenatal care and attendant personnel. It makes both financial sense and medical sense for state laws to permit home birth attended by midwives, for insurers to reimburse for home delivery, and for hospitals and obstetricians to provide medical back-up. Obstetricians need to take their blinders off and learn to cooperate with folks who want to deliver in their own homes. WHAT'S NEW! Kenneth C Johnson and Betty-Anne Daviss
Outcomes of planned home births with certified professional midwives:

large prospective study in North America.

    BMJ 2005;330:1416 (18 June).
The study included prospectively reported data from more than 5000 women planning home births with Certified Professional Midwives in the year 2000 in the U.S. and Can, and found that outcomes for mothers and babies were the same as for low-risk mothers giving birth in hospitals, but with a fraction of the interventions.
