Co-Parenting: A Review of the Literature
by Terry Arendell
Co-parenting encompasses several meanings. In some cases, it is synonymous with shared parenting. Other times it basically refers to father presence in the lives of children and their mothers, no matter how limited the parental involvement. Mothers still carry the lion's share of parenting responsibility. Maternal childrearing is mostly taken for granted and fathers' involvement compared to or juxtaposed over and against mothers', including in discussions of co-parenting. Diversity in family composition or structure accounts for much of the varied meanings of the term co-parenting. Adult roles in families with children can be characterized, to paraphrase Cowan and Cowan (1988), as parenting, partnering, and providing. Sahler (1983:219) defines parenting as a special category of childrearing which "is the art of overseeing a child's growth and development." Men's possible parenting contributions, assuming an intact marriage, are described variously as the activities of: meeting children's needs, providing contrast effects by offering children two different primary caretakers, and creating a social picture of normalcy in a society which continues to value the two-parent, nuclear family. Men, and women, also contribute to parenting by providing support to the other parent (e.g., Crnic and Booth, 1991; May and Strikwerda, 1992; for a psychoanalytic perspective see Muir, 1989, and more generally, Cath et al., 1989).

Father Presence Matters: A Review of the Literature
Toward an Ecological Framework of Fathering and Child Outcomes
by Deborah J. Johnson
In an ecological perspective, the boundaries of households and the roles of financiers are important but too narrow to assess the critical and broad question of fathers' presence and their unique contribution to child development. The complex of father-child, mother-child, mother-father, and mother-child-father relations and interactions described is referred to as the psychological ecology of the child. This review discusses the research on father absence and child development. It is expected that the unique contributions of fathers to the developmental outcomes of their children will be better understood from these empirical researches. Indeed, greater insights into the nature and consequence of father presence should become evident. The review then assesses what the other perspectives on residential and nonresidential fathers have to offer in support of or as challenges to more traditional views. The review concludes with a brief discussion on research directions, policy implications, and recommendations.
FATHER-ABSENCE PARADIGM: DEVELOPMENT AND CHILD OUTCOMES
Studies of father absence have identified children's behavioral, academic, and social problems, each with unique features linked to their developmental stages. Three major emphases are identified in the literature: intellectual or academic effects of father absence; gender-specific issues associated with psychosexual identity and development; and general behavioral adjustment and aggression in males. Other studies focus on social support, mental health, and other aspects of well-being in life course adjustment.

    Background
I sent a Request for Information to the ISWorldNet List on 14 July 2000. This document summarises the information provided by that community. It is part of a cumulative archive of research information solicited via ISWorld , maintained by Ron Weber. I was actually seeking information in relation to the disciplined examination of published research, or systematic literature review; but I referred to it using the term 'meta-analysis'. The problem is that that term is already used for a specific statistical technique. This document presents the information that I've accumulated from responses relating to DLR.htmldisciplined literature reviews. A separate document contains the information about the statistical technique called meta-analysis

    Writing Literature Reviews
Literature reviews are a crucial piece of the academic research project, though many writers may find themselves wondering why. To some, these lit reviews may seem like busywork or like a request for a book report, but a successful literature review is much more than that. Literature reviews provide, among other things, an opportunity for writers to articulate what drew them to a project in the first place. More importantly, however, literature reviews present an overview of previous work on your topic, thus setting a benchmark for your project. In addition, literature reviews allow you to explore, justify, question, and critique the research methodologies, solution techniques, problem-solving procedures, and overall conclusions you encountered in your review process. This in-depth analysis of your sources is what differentiates a literature review (which is essentially evaluative, i.e., it makes a judgment about the relative worth of each source) from a book report (which is essentially informative, i.e., it describes the content of a text without reflecting on its merit). To an outside reader in your field, a thorough literature review demonstrates that you are familiar with both historical and current research on your topic, and that you have considered a range of methodological approaches to your project. In other words, the lit review establishes your credibility as someone who has prepared carefully before embarking on independent research.
